文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了为了保障残疾人的生活,中国政府投入的与残疾相关的费用正在逐年增加。

1 . China’s disability-related expense at all levels has increased year by year. Last year saw the completion of the National Ice Sports Arena for People With Impairments in light of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. The Games officially opened on March 4, marking not only a great event for the Olympic family, but also the advancement of China’s path for developing the cause of people with disabilities.

Protection of those differently abled in employment, social security, public facilities, and education keeps improving in laws and regulations ensuring the rights and interests of persons with disabilities.

China has 85 million people with disabilities, who need more attention and help—from government and public alike. The possibility of people with disabilities falling back to poverty is high; the total amount of public services for people with physical impairments is not enough and their distribution remains uneven; their diverse needs, such as education, medical services, and recovery, are not adequately met; discrimination, too, still occurs; less developed and rural areas are not suitable for them.

According to the arrangements for the protection and development of people with disabilities during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period issued in July 2021, basic systems providing multi-level social security will be in place by 2025 to ensure the livelihood of this social group continues to improve. By 2035, the differently abled will live a richer material and cultural life, and the gap between them and the average national level will have been remarkably narrowed.

To achieve these goals, the Chinese Government is revising regulations on the employment of those differently abled, aiming to help them live better and more fulfilled lives through their work. In addition, the country is accelerating the upgrading of the social security system, so that the differently abled with unstable income will be included in government aid under China’s social safety net program.

1. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The problems people with disabilities meet.
B.The uneven distribution of medical services.
C.The poverty level of people with disabilities.
D.The growing attention to the differently abled.
2. What can people with disabilities benefit from the 14th Five-Year Plan?
A.Improving livelihood.
B.Basic commercial security.
C.The narrowed gap.
D.A materially satisfying life.
3. Which can best replace the underlined word “accelerating” in the last paragraph?
A.Quickening.B.Receiving.C.Considering.D.Assessing.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the growing disability-related expense?
A.Critical.B.Favorable.C.Objective.D.Uninterested.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。贝加尔湖营养匮乏,但是海豹数量很大,这一直是个不解之谜。日本研究人员的一项研究也许能够揭开这一谜团。

2 . Lake Baikal(贝加尔湖)is the biggest body of fresh water on Earth. It’s about 1.6km in depth and is also the deepest. Several unusual animals call it home, including the world’s only species of freshwater seal. There are a large number of Baikal seals, about 8, 000-10, 000. But the lake is nutrient-poor, so how they do so well has been a puzzle. A study conducted by Yuuki Watanabe of the National Institute of Polar Research, in Tokyo, suggests a possible answer.

Most seals eat fish. And Baikal seals do have needle-like teeth. But in 1982 researchers noted that they had some specialized comb-like teeth behind the needle-like ones. At the time, nobody knew what they were for. But Dr. Watanabe supposed that they might be an adaptation for feeding on other tiny creatures living in the lake.

Seals arrived in Baikal two million years ago, from the Arctic Ocean. So did some much smaller sea creatures, known as amphipods(片脚类动物). They have diversified into more than 340 native species. Sea creatures the size of seals would normally see amphipods to be too small to hunt. But Dr. Watanabe wondered if Baikal seals’ comb-like teeth might have evolved to enable the seals to hunt these tiny creatures to make them useful prey-just as some whales collect extremely small shellfish using comb-like structures. He and his colleagues therefore attached waterproof video cameras to a few seals to monitor what they were getting up to.

Scenes from the cameras showed that the seals were indeed pursuing the groups of amphipods at night. Dr. Watanabe estimated that each seal caught an average of 57 amphipods per dive and thus thousands of them a day. The needle-like teeth are not useless, for the seals do hunt fish as well. They compete with those fish for the amphipods, thus perhaps maintaining themselves in larger numbers.

1. Which aspect of Baikal seals remains unknown?
A.Why they live in Lake Baikal.B.How they got into Lake Baikal.
C.When they reached Lake Baikal.D.How they grow well in Lake Baikal.
2. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Researchers.B.Comb-like teeth.
C.Baikal seals.D.Needle-like teeth.
3. Why did researchers attach video cameras to the seals?
A.To take control of their behaviour patterns.
B.To record how they coexist with amphipods.
C.To confirm if they live on small water creatures.
D.To find the similarities between seals and whales.
4. What message is conveyed in the last paragraph?
A.There is a sharply growing trend towards Baikal seals.
B.Baikal seals prefer hunting amphipods at night.
C.Needle-like teeth are of little use to Baikal seals.
D.Baikal seals feed on fish besides amphipods.

While Flach’s final score was less than half her personal best, she’s trying not to focus on that aspect, nor on the fact that she never qualified for an Olympics in her career.

6 . Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming dangers, scientists claim. The ultra-fast mobile Internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.

Several car manufacturers are already integrating 5G into their vehicles, including as a tool to welcome the coming of self-driving vehicles. Experts believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents — which according to the World Health Organization (WHO) account for more than 1. 3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year — will drop thoroughly as a result. Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said: “With the help of 5G, an early warning system that alerts (给……报警) drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will send warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably. Then those cars will transmit the same information to cars near them and so on, forming a joined-up, multi-vehicle communication chain that stretches far and wide.”

Automotive giant Ford is already working on connected cars. Earlier this year it revealed its intention to fit 80 percent of its 2020 vehicles with technology that warns drivers about up-coming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams. The system pools data from other connected road users, emergency services and the authorities and sends it from the cloud directly to the car. Alerts are shown on the car’s dashboard display warning the driver about what lies around the corner.

1. What can we expect of the cars in the future?
A.They will be more personalized.
B.They may replace other vehicles.
C.They may be bigger.
D.They will be safer.
2. What is the function of the communication chain?
A.To send warning messages.
B.To collect drivers’ information.
C.To send the traffic situation to the police.
D.To track other drivers.
3. How can 5G help reduce road accidents?
A.By offering practical safety programs.
B.By offering the fast mobile Internet.
C.By helping WHO calculate traffic accidents.
D.By helping drivers overcome dangers.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Connected cars are equipped with 5G.
B.Ford is the first producer to use 5G.
C.Cars of Ford are the most intelligent.
D.Warning messages are shown on phones.

Every time Jim crossed the street on his way to work, he would see a little girl selling flowers on the street. She sat by a large green board with the names of the flowers and their prices on it. Unfortunately, no one paid attention to her, and she rarely sold anything. Jim wanted to help her, and one day he got his chance. His aunt would retire, and he thought a bouquet (花束) would be a great gift.

“Hello, could you please make me a bouquet of roses?” Jim said as he approached the girl.

The girl didn’t raise her head and just stared at the same spot on the ground. “I’m Cassy. Thank you for buying flowers from me,” she said. “Could you please select the flowers by yourself and give them to me? I will tie them together for you. I can’t see. ”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Jim said as he picked the flowers and handed them to her. Within several seconds, the girl made a lovely bouquet for Jim.

“Here,” she said, holding the bouquet. “That’ll be $5.”

“Thanks. They’re beautiful,” Jim said and walked away after placing the money in the hat beside Cassy.

The next day, Jim went to work and he decided to have a quick talk with Cassy on the way. However, he didn’t see Cassy where she used to be that morning. He thought she might be late and decided to meet her the next day, but she didn’t show up for the next few days in a row (连续地).

I think that you are never going to be as happy as you were when you were little. There are no worries when you are little. The things that worried you most are not important things. My most memorable moments happened when I was a child. I can not remember a lot of them because I was very little but I remember the most exciting thing for me at that time.

Some of my friends that I have now have been my best friends since childhood. It is really nice to still have them in my life. Most of them I know are from school but some of them are because of our mothers. And it is really strange to think that you have spent all your life with them. We often went out for sightseeing during holidays, which really made us kids happy and helped establish sincere friendship.

One trip that I remember a lot was when I went with one of my best friend Kate to a cruise (乘船游览) to the Caribbean islands in a summer holiday when I was 10 years old. Going there was a perfect thing that I’d always dreamed of. On the way to the cruise, we were very excited. We both were going with our families. We were together all of the time. Sometimes she came to sleep in my room and sometimes I went to hers. When we got down in the islands we also spent all of the time together because our mothers are also very good friends. On the morning of the last day of the trip the cruise stopped near a mall to let tourists go into the mall to do some shopping. Both Kate’s and my parents were busy in choosing clothes and we showed no interest in clothes, so we felt a little bored, having nothing to do.

Grandpa’s Old Chair

It was the annual cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside and outside until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Just then, John’s mom noticed an old chair that was faded and worn. That chair was for John’s grandpa, who had lived with them since John’s grandma had died.

“John, come and help me.” John’s mom sprang to her feet. “We’ll take the chair to the curb (路边). The garbage truck is picking up on our block tomorrow.”

As they attempted to move the chair, John’s grandpa made his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly tried to stop them. “No!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”

“But it’s so old...” John’s mom argued. “We’ll buy you a new one.”

“No,” he persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.

John’s mom finally let go of the chair and left the room. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.

“Grandpa, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair?” John asked.

“You don’t understand, John.” His grandpa shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair with your grandma right here when I asked her to marry me. And I sat in this chair the night your father was born. Many years later,” Grandpa’s voice broke, “I sat in this chair when the doctor called and told me that your grandma was ill. I was lost without her, but the chair gave me comfort and warmth.” The old man’s sadness seemed to grow as he recalled that fateful day.

“I understand now.” John looked at his grandpa and said, “This is not just any old chair. It is more like a friend.”

“Yes,” he nodded. “We’ve gone through a lot together.”

However, that night, when John and his grandpa were asleep, John’s mom and dad carried the chair outside. It was a starless night. Snow fell silently from the black sky and covered Grandpa’s chair in a blanket of white.
