2 . We have heard some interesting ways that 5G wireless(无线的) technology might change our lives in the future.

5G technology promises the internet speeds between 50 to 100 times faster than 4G systems. While 5G is set to be used in some limited areas of America this year, much of the world is not expected to receive widely used service until 2023.

One project in Britain, however, is already testing this super fast technology on an unlikely group Internet users—cows. The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems, Inc. It also receives money from the British government. Cisco says the program seeks to explore the future of 5G in countryside areas around the world.

Testing areas were set up at farms in 3 countryside areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G devices(装置)that connect to a robotic milking(挤奶) system, which uses sensors(传感器) and machine learning to fully automate the process. System designers say technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks towards an automatic gate. During the milking, machines give food for the cow as a reward.

Other 5G technology tools include automated brushes that turn on when the cow rubs up(蹭) against them. Sensors also control the amount of light to the cows living areas depending on the weather. And, an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always have enough to eat.

Duncan Forbes, head of a government-funded agricultural engineering organization, told Reauters that the project shows the farm’s cow operation can be greatly improved with 5G technology and that the experiment provided strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future, not just on farms in Britain, but in countryside across the world.

1. What is the aim of Cisco Systems Inc’s project?
A.To win financial support from the British government
B.To test the effects of 5G technology on animals

4 . My favourite book, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, talks about a formula called “SFF” which stands for “stopping finding fault”. I used to be a critical person and tried to find fault. I guess I somehow inherited this character from my father. Actually, many good qualities of my father are worth admiring except this.

My father is a person who constantly looks for mistakes in other people and he thinks no one is perfect in the world. His character created a negative atmosphere in my family. I was the same as my father, so I often felt angry, disappointed, depressed, and lonely in school.

After I had read my favourite book I began to seek “good things” in other people. It has completely changed my life. Now I feel happier, I have more friends, I have more trust in people, and I realize everyone has his own strength! Another important lesson I got from this book is that I should always behave myself in a positive manner. Let's admit that we sometimes complain about our situation. That's not good. Believe it or not, people don't like to listen to negative opinions.

One more valuable lesson I got from the book is that I should be a good listener. When I was younger, I only wanted people to pay whole attention to my words so that I could show them how important I was. I was very proud and would show off my achievements in school without considering others' feelings. I had very few friends and most people considered me as an arrogant person. Now, I find it much easier to make friends after making some changes!

1. What do you know about the author's father?
A.He makes his son feel angry and disappointed.
B.He likes finding fault with people around him.
C.He seems a critical person but in fact easy-going.
D.He can create a negative atmosphere when necessary.
2. The underlined word “arrogant” probably means “________”.
A.self-importantB.admirable
C.troublesomeD.cold-blooded
3. What is the author's purpose of writing the text?
A.To persuade readers to be good listeners.
B.To share his painful experience of making changes.
C.To tell readers the influence of a book on him.
D.To show the result of his father's negative character.

5 . Reading the Screen

The debate on literacy is one of the most heated in education. On the one hand, there is an army of people convinced that traditional skills of reading and writing are declining. On the other hand, a large number of progressives protest that literacy is much more complicated than a simple technical mastery of reading and writing. This second position is supported by most of the relevant academic work over the past 20 years. These studies argue that literacy can only be understood in its social and technical context. In Renaissance England, for example, many more people could read than could write, and within reading there was a distinction between those who could read print and those who could manage the more difficult task of reading manuscripts (手稿). An understanding of these earlier periods helps us understand today’s “crisis in literacy” debate.

It seems that there has been an overall decline in some aspects of reading and writing—you only need to compare the newspapers of today with those of 50 years ago to see a clear decrease in vocabulary and simplification of sentence patterns.

While reading a certain amount of writing is as crucial as it has ever been in industrial societies, it is doubtful whether a fully extended grasp of either is as necessary as it was 40 years ago. While print holds much of its authority as a source of topical information, television has increasingly taken this role. The ability to write fluent letters has been weakened by the telephone and research suggests that for many people the only use for writing, outside formal education, is making shopping lists.

The decision of some car factories to issue their instructions to mechanics as a video pack rather than as a handbook might end the automatic link between industrialization and literacy. On the other hand, it is also the case that ever-increasing numbers of people make their living out of writing, which is better rewarded than ever before. Schools are generally seen as institutions where books rule—films and recorded sound have almost no place, but it is not clear that this opposition is appropriate. While you may not need to read and write to watch television, you certainly need to be able to read and write in order to make programs. Those who work in new media are anything but literate. The traditional oppositions between old and new media are inadequate for understanding the world which a young child now encounters. There is evidence that children are mastering reading and writing in order to get on to the Internet.

Nevertheless, there is a crisis in literacy and it would be foolish to ignore it. To understand that literacy may be declining because it is less central to some aspects of everyday life is not the same as reluctantly accepting this state of affairs. The production of school work with the new technologies could be a significant stimulus to literacy. How should these new technologies be introduced into the schools? It isn’t enough to call for computers in every classroom. They will stand unused unless they are properly combined with the educational culture.

1. When discussing the debate on literacy in education, the writer notes that________.
A.children can read and write as well as they used to
B.academic work has improved over the last 20 years
C.there is evidence that literacy is related to external factors
D.people’s reading skills are more important than writing skills
2. What is the writer’s main point in the 4th paragraph?
A.The printed word is both gaining and losing power.
B.The car factories’ decision brings benefits to labors.
C.Those who do manual jobs no longer need to read.
D.New media offers the best career for the literate.
3. According to the passage, what is the main problem that schools face today?
A.How to teach students the skills of reading and writing.
B.How to apply new technologies to classroom teaching.
C.Raising money to purchase technological equipment.
D.Managing the widely differing levels of literacy among pupils.
4. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Modern communication has completely replaced writing letters.
B.New media has the potential to promote students’ literacy.
C.New technologies are inadequate for us to know about children’s world.
D.Current newspapers use more complicated sentence patterns than before.

6 . Do we have a movement signature?

As humans, we have several qualities that separate us from one another, such as our fingerprints.     1

According to a recent study, each person has a unique movement signature (鲜明特征). Depending on the person, these differences can be subtle or pronounced.

2     For the study, scientists attached electrodes (电极) to muscles in the legs of volunteers. The volunteer were then asked to perform activities such as walking on walking machines and riding stationary bikes (健身车), which were adjusted according to each person’s physical appearance in order to make sure everyone was judged using the same standards.

Scientists fed the information to a computer along with the volunteer’s name.     3     Next, the computer was fed information without the user’s name and it could identity the person correctly 99% of the time. The outcomes of the study showed that each of us does have something unique about our general movements.

4     Since this is just a pilot study, scientists will do more tests to see if the signature changes with age and weight changes. But with a deeper understanding of the science of movement, doctors could possibly develop more intricate prosthetics (复杂精细的假肢).     5     Whether that’s cool or frightening is up to you to decide.

A.How could this study be of use to scientists?
B.What do you think of the findings of the study?
C.Volunteers are expected to write a report on the activities.
D.Is it possible that we also have unique qualities in our movement.
E.Scientists could also program robots to copy humans’ movements more exactly.
F.In this way, the computer could learn the unique movement quality of each person.
G.The study was conducted by inviting people to take part in a couple of physical activities.

7 . Research is done all the time and most of it goes straight by us, but sometimes we come across some results that are too interesting not to share. It can be fun to find out about new facts, but sometimes you come across things you’d rather not have known. Luckily, we’ve got some fun facts for you today! It turns out that your hand can tell you a lot about your personality. It’s really quite strange. This research mostly focuses on your fingers.

The secret lies in your ring finger and index finger(食指). It can say a lot about what kind of man you are. Yes, this test only applies to men because the length of these fingers indicates the level of testosterone(睾酮)in men. There are three types: A, B and C.

A. The ring finger is longer than the index finger

We’re talking about handsome men here. They’re charming and can get along with everyone. Yet they are a little more aggressive and are quick to take risks. This also means that these people often make more money than their colleagues with a shorter ring finger.

Men with these hands are very confident and can even be a little self-loving. These people have no trouble being alone often and don’t like being disturbed. When it comes to love, they do not take a risk out there a lot. They’re not the ones to make the first move.

C. The ring finger and index finger are the same lengths

Maybe this says enough already. Men with these hands are good mediators(调停者), devoted and loving. Everything is balanced with these people. They’re calm and everything seems to run smoothly, as if it’s all organised.

A.We know nothing about them.B.Both the hands are different.

10 . Next-generation fitness equipment and robots help you cook dinner. Those are a few of the countless new products expected to be shown next week at CES, the annual tech conference that typically sets the tone for the biggest trends of the year. Home automation, health and 5G will once again be hot topics, but many companies will also introduce pandemic-specific features to reflect our increased time at home.

Each year, reporters, exhibitors and investors typically explore Las Vegas showrooms filled with giant TVs, smart cars and robots, but CES will be online only for the first time in its 54-year history due to Covid-19.

The Consumer Technology Association, the nonprofit behind the four-day event starting Monday, said 1,800 exhibitors from around the world will fill its "digital venue" this year—a number that's down significantly from 4,000 in-person exhibitors last year. The move will allow tech companies from countries which have never attended before to take part in the online exhibition, but could also make it harder for smaller companies to get noticed without a physical showroom.

Registered attendees will be able to stream and re-watch keynotes from companies such as Verizon (VZ) and General Motors (GM), tune in to breakout sessions — about how, for example, technology is playing a role in vaccine deployment—and search through a registry of exhibitors to watch new product presentations.

It'll lack some of the signature ingredients of the trade show, such as hands-on time with the latest small machines and networking. But the technology that makes our lives more connected and convenient will still gain popularity.

1. What are the new products mainly connected with?
A.People’s daily life.B.Everyday busy work.
C.The popularity of 5G.D.Countless housework.
2. What do we know about the tech conference?
A.It takes place every two years.B.It attracts fewer exhibitors this year.
C.It is held mainly on the Internet.D.It prohibits small companies to attend.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards the move?
A.Supportive.B.Disappointed.C.Doubtful.D.Casual.
4. Where are the text possibly from?
A.A brochure.B.A textbook.C.A newspaper.D.A guidebook.
