文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了足球俱乐部最初的成立以及历史发展。

3 . Football clubs have existed since the 15th century, but unorganized and without official status. It is therefore hard to decide which the first football club was.

Early clubs were formed by former school students.    1    In the beginning, football was dominated by public school teams. Later, teams consisting of workers made up the majority.

Another change took place when some clubs became willing to pay the best players to join their team.     2    In the 1880s, the interest in the game moved ahead to a level that tickets were sold to the matches. And finally, in 1885 professional football was legalized. Three years later, the Football League was established.

3    Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup) became the first important competition in 1871. The following year a match between England and Scotland was played for the first time. That was followed by 4,000 people at Hamilton Crescent.

Football was for a long time a British phenomenon.    4    The first game outside Europe occurred in Argentina in 1867. But it was foreign British workers who were involved and not its domestic citizens.

Then the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded. England and the other British countries did not join FIFA from the start. They had invented the game and saw no reason to obey an association.    5

In 1908, football was included as an official sport in the Olympic Games. Until the first FIFA World Cup was played in 1930, the Olympic Games football tournament ranked as the greatest on a national level.

A.Other milestones were now to follow.
B.Still, they joined in the following year.
C.Thus, football was played all over the world.
D.But it gradually spread to other European countries.
E.Until now, FIFA still plays a major role in the world.
F.And the first of this kind was formed in Sheffield in 1855.
G.The motivation behind this was not only to win more matches.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了新冠流行病后加拿大学生在数学和阅读方面成绩下降的情况以及人们的一些看法。

4 . Recently released test scores from some of California's largest school districts — representing more than 1 million students — offer a preview of what's likely to be sharp drops in reading and math scores statewide in the wake of COVID epidemic (流行病).

Only 13% of students in Bakersfield met the state standard for math. Reading scores in Los Angeles Unified dipped only slightly from 2019 to 2022. Still, only 41% of students in 2022 were skilled in reading. Math scores in Fresno dropped by a third. In 2022, only 21% of students met the math standard. Reading scores in Long Beach dropped 11 points, but declines were less steep in math. Math scores fell only 4 points.

“That’s not a surprise, considering the difficulties teachers and students faced as they returned from distance learning,” said Robert Sahli, a headmaster. “The epidemic was tough for everyone.... But these scores signal that we need to make a personalized, intensive effort to help kids catch up and recoup what they’ve lost.”

Like other districts, Lodi has hired more tutors and teachers to help students catch up, beefed up summer school and after-school academic offerings, adopted new curricula (课程) and taken other steps to help students.

“Steps like that could be the most useful result of the Smarter Balanced scores,” said Lucrecia Santibanez, associate professor of education at UCLA. “Closely analyzing the data and using it to forge a path forward — specifically for certain groups of students — are more useful than assigning blame,” she said.

“Although the scores are disappointing, they can be an important tool to help schools find resources in the future,” she said. “The scores can provide a window into what exact content students have missed, where they’re falling behind and which students need the most help.”

1. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?
A.The ranking of schools’ test scores.
B.The pass rate in math and reading tests.
C.The comparison between math and reading.
D.The declines in math and reading test scores.
2. What does the underlined word “recoup” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Look for.B.Make up for.C.Adjust to.D.Come up with.
3. What is Lucrecia Santibanez’s attitude towards Lodi’s measures?
A.Supportive.B.Disappointed.C.Mixed.D.Critical.
4. What is Lucrecia Santibanez’s advice to teachers?
A.Increase after-school activities.B.Find out their own problems.
C.Understand learning situation.D.Take advantage of teaching tools.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究,研究发现人们在成年中期的睡眠时间比在成年早期和晚期要少,但平均睡眠时长因地区和国家而异。

5 . People sleep less in mid-adulthood than they do in early and late adulthood, finds a new study.

The study involved 730,187 participants over 63 countries. Study participants were playing the Sea Hero Quest mobile game, a citizen science program. It was designed to aid Alzheimer's disease research by revealing differences in navigational (导航的) abilities.

In addition to completing tasks testing navigational ability, anyone playing the game was asked to answer questions about people's characteristics as well as other questions that could be useful to the research, such as on sleep patterns.

The researchers found that people sleep an average of 7.01 hours per night, with women sleeping 7.5 minutes longer than men on average. They found that the youngest participants in the sample (minimum age 19) slept the most, and sleep duration declined throughout people's 20s and early 30s before steadying until their early 50s and increasing again. The pattern, including the newly-identified key time points of age 33when declining sleep steadies and 53 for sleep to increase again, was the same for men and women, and across countries and education levels.

Professor Spiers said: “Former studies have found associations between age and sleep duration, but ours is the first large study to identify these three distinct phases across the life course. We found that across the globe, people sleep less during mid-adulthood, but average sleep duration varies between regions and between countries.”

People who report sleeping the most are in Eastern European countries such as Albania, and Romania, reporting 20 — 40 minutes extra sleep per night and the least in South East Asian countries including Malaysia and Indonesia. People in the United Kingdom reported sleeping slightly less than the average. People tend to sleep a bit less in countries closer to the equator like Uganda.

The researchers found navigational ability was unaffected by sleep duration for most of the sample, except for among older adults (aged 54 — 70) whose perfect sleep duration was seven hours, but pointed out the findings might be impacted by health conditions.

1. What were the participants asked to do?
A.Reply to some questions.B.Design a mobile game.
C.Aid people with Alzheimer.D.Share solutions to sleep problems.
2. What is one finding of the new study?
A.Older adults often suffer from sleep problems.
B.Men tend to sleep minutes longer than women.
C.There is a link between age and sleep duration.
D.People sleep the least from early 30s to early 50s.
3. What can we infer from Professor Spiers' words?
A.Middle-aged people have similar sleep habit.
B.Sleep duration varies from person to person.
C.They found out the link between age and sleep.
D.There was no such study in adults' sleep before.
4. In which country do people need the minimum sleep?
A.Romania.B.Uganda.C.Indonesia.D.The United Kingdom.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章以2022年卡塔尔世界杯引入主题,以时间为顺序介绍了世界杯的历史以及相关知识。

10 . The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off, with more than 30 teams participating. In the tournament’s 92-year history, only eight countries have won: Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Argentina, Spain, Uruguay and England.

It was the first time that the Cup had been held in the Middle East. Summer temperatures in Qatar regularly top 100 degrees, so for the safety of both athletes and audience, organizers pushed the month-long contest out to late November, when the weather is milder.

Uruguay was the first host and winner of the World Cup back in 1930. The final match played out in front of 60,000 audiences. No World Cup was held between 1938 and 1950 due to World War Ⅱ. The 1950 tournament in Brazil featured separate East and West German teams. It wasn’t until the 1994 World Cup that Germany took part as a unified team. West Germany won in 1954.

That 1950 Cup was also the first to feature England, despite soccer being an English invention. That year, Team USA beat England 1-0, though some British newspapers reported the result as USA 1, England 10, as editors believed the real score had a typo. Both sides believed it would be an easy win for England, and double-digit (两位数) goals were expected. This match is considered by many as one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

The first women’s World Cup started many decades after the men’s, in 1991. That first one was held in China. Our team is so dominant that we have won half of all the World Cups to date. The women play every four years, just like the men, but not on the same schedule. The next women’s World Cup will be held in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.

1. Why was the 2022 World Cup put off to winter?
A.To satisfy audience.
B.To be a special match.
C.To avoid high temperatures.
D.To meet the requirements of the players.
2. How is the text mainly organized?
A.In time order.B.In space order.
C.By explanation.D.By comparison.
3. What does the underlined word “typo” mean in paragraph 4?
A.A typing error.B.A spelling error.
C.A program error.D.A mathematical error.
4. What can we learn about the women’s World Cup from the last paragraph?
A.China won the first women’s World Cup.
B.China has hosted 50% of the women’s World Cups.
C.It is arranged on a different timetable from the men’s.
D.It is held in the same country as the men’s every four years.
