Trust your bad luck
Before this time, I usually buy a first class train ticket. That is necessary! Because this is one of the most crowded and poorest region in the world, I am afraid that there are no seats in the general class. Unluckily, this time I was running late. I was informed there was no first class seating available, so I was forced to buy a general ticket.
The general coach was extremely crowded. Smell of sweat and sighs from tired bodies troubled me. I stepped over people sitting on the floor, asking them to make a little space for me to stand, but nobody moved. Finally, I had to shout at two poor people to make a standing place near the gate for me. 6 . In the fevered world of diet and nutrition, the past year has been dominated by heated arguments about the evils (or not) of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). So are they as bad for health as many claim?
The processing of food is as ancient as humankind. But the modern-time UPFs are different—they are the products of industrial processing methods that allow cost-effective mass production. More than half of the calories an average person in the UK consumes today come from UPFs. That’s not surprising as these foods can be convenient and inexpensive.
There is more than ample evidence that consumption of too much UPSs is linked to poorer health outcomes. They often contain high levels of fat, salt and sugar and when we eat them, we leave less room for more nutritious foods. It’s also believed that the additives in these foods could be responsible for negative health effects.
But the way we currently talk about UPFs strikes me as unhelpful. The term covers such a broad range of different foods, from those that have been almost completely reconstructed from their base constituents (成分) like packaged snacks, to otherwise minimally processed foods with a few industrial additives, such as a natural yogurt, with a small amount of UPF jam.
I can absolutely understand how eating too much of the former can lead to poorer health outcomes. The latter, however, includes mass-produced supermarket bread, where a large proportion of consumed UPF calories come from. Sure, you can go to a quality bakery and purchase an organic product that will cost much more than a supermarket loaf. But ultimately, bread is made from flour, salt, water and yeast. Taste aside, supermarket bread is no worse for you than fancy bread.
I fear that the UPF concept is too imprecise to be an arbiter (权威) of how healthy or unhealthy a particular food might be, and even worse, that it is currently being used as another cudgel (棍棒) to food—shame others.

But such devices’ battery capacity limits how long they operate, often bringing an early end to vital conservation work. Solar-powered trackers break easily, making them a poor choice for devices strapped to larger mammals—and they don’t work for night creatures.
So biologist Rasmus Worsoe Havmoller of the University of Copenhagen and his colleagues turned to another abundant power source: kinetic energy generated by an animal’s movements. It is also lighter and cheaper to make than its battery-powered counterparts. The design “is creative and exciting,” says Mark Hebblewhite, a habitat ecologist at the University of Montana. The proof-of-concept kinetic tracker works by means of a magnetic pendulum (摆钟) that swings around a copper coil, generating electricity as it moves.
Their kinetic tracker, which Havmoller’s team recently tested on domestic dogs, a wild pony and a European bison, could theoretically survive for the entire life span of an active animal. The dogs and bison in the study were active enough to create the energy to transmit one location signal per day for 14 days and 17 days, respectively. One of the wild pony’s trackers lasted at least 146 days but didn’t produce enough power for daily transmissions, the researchers reported in PLOS ONE. The limited power generated by the animals’ movements means the technology isn’t ready for prime time just yet, says ecologist Emily Studd of British Columbia’s Thompson Rivers University, who wasn’t involved in the study.
When researchers want to keep close tabs on animals, they often need GPS fixes more than once a day. But Studd says that “with a bit more development, this could be a game changer for wildlife animal research and monitoring.”

Vivid in my memory remains the scene when my dad gathered our family in the living room. After nearly eleven months of unemployment, we could sense what this meant.
