As a child, I distinctly remembered watching some PBS cartoon character get glasses; the poor girl was made fun of by her peers when playing basketball. I silently thanked God for my good eyesight — but I spoke too soon.
When I entered the sixth grade, I could no longer see writing on the whiteboard clearly. So, I received my first pair of glasses. I only wore them in the classroom, and didn’t mind them too much. Self-image was not important for the then little girl.
Entering my freshman year in high school, I began to miss basketball shots in games — more so than usual. My eyes were re-examined, and the doctor determined that my eyesight had become worse. I would either have to wear glasses full time, or try contacts (隐形眼镜). Being the passionate athlete I was, I bypassed the annoyance of glasses and began to wear contacts. My entire world was transformed. Trees actually had leaves. The faces around me radiated individual expressions. And I could see the basket a whole lot better now. I was overjoyed with my newfound sight — and appearance.
When my senior year came along, I began to have trouble with my right eye. It got to the point where whenever I wore my contacts, my right eye would suffer an intolerable, stabbing pain, forcing me to take the contacts out. It was physically impossible to wear them. I would be in the doctor’s office at least three times a month, trying to solve the mystery of the problem with my eye.
I was beginning to get frustrated. I didn’t mind wearing my glasses to see the board in school, but all the time? At dances? At basketball games? No. That was not okay with me. I couldn’t imagine how I would be laughed at by my peers on the court. I hoped and prayed the doctor would cure my illness soon. That hope was soon crushed. No medicine had worked, and there was nothing left to try. He advised that I wear my glasses full time. But I couldn’t hate my glasses more.

6 . How many bosses could rely on their employees threatening to quit in mass if they were abruptly forced out? Sam Altman received such a show of support from more than 700 staff after he was fired from Open AI that he was swiftly restored to his position by the board. But this level of loyalty is not typical and may not always be a good thing.
Management experts say staff who are loyal to their employer are inclined to invest more time and effort in their jobs, helping to create an engaged and higher performing workplace. In turn they receive promotions and pay rises. They have a greater sense of belonging and potentially a longer career at the same organisation. But it is not all rosy. People who are too loyal are more likely to take actions that are deemed wrong to keep their jobs and protect their employer, according to a 2021 academic paper. They might overlook wrongdoing and be less likely to expose corruption. Loyalty is sometimes seen as such a force for good that it can be used to justify bad behavior.
Often companies and senior bosses are the real winner a of employee loyalty. Research led by Matthew Stanley at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business published this year, found that managers were more likely to exploit loyal individuals. Stanley recruited almost 1,400 managers to read about a fictional 29-year-old employee called John, who worked for a company that was trying to keep costs down. They had to decide how willing they would be to ask John to work longer hours and take on more work without more pay. Researchers created various situations including labelling John as loyal versus other traits such as honest and fair. Managers were more willing to ask loyal John to take on the burden of unpaid work.
However, Consultancy Gallup’s latest state of the workplace report showed that half of the 122, 416 employees who took part in a global survey were looking out for new work. “You can’t guarantee anyone will stick around these days,” says a consultant who advises boards. This is particularly true of younger generations. They trust their bosses less and are not as patient when it comes to career progression, seeing little benefit in keeping their heads down and following orders if they do not see results quickly.

There was once a strong wrestler (摔跤手) called Vijay Singh. Warm-hearted but fond of boasting (吹牛), he said he was brave enough to meet the ghost in the Haunted Desert. The evil ghost illegally gathered lots of treasures so the villagers suffered a lot.
That evening almost the entire village turned up to say good-bye to Vijay Singh. Just then an old woman came forward and forced a block of salt and an egg into his hands.
Stepping into the Haunted Desert, Vijay Sing h heard a ghost calling his name. “Really, I don’t know why you longed to meet me,” said the ghost. “That proves,” said Vijay Singh, “that you are a stupid ghost.”
Vijay Sing h picked up a piece of rock from the sand and told the ghost to press it hard to get fluid (液体). While the ghost tried hard, Vijay Singh secretly took out the egg from his pocket. Surely the ghost failed. Vijay Singh placed the rock between both hands and pressed it. At once the yellow yolk (蛋黄) flowed from around his fingers. The ghost was so astonished.
Vijay Singh then picked up another piece of rock for the ghost. “That stone contains salt. Break it and see.” Again the ghost tried hard, but in vain. Vijay Singh quickly got the block of salt in his hand before taking the stone from the ghost. Then he let the stone drop in the darkness, held out his hand and commanded the ghost to taste the powdered stone. The ghost was now beginning to doubt his ghostly powers.
Later the ghost invited Vijay Singh to his cave for the night. The ghost led him to a luxurious bed to sleep on. But Vijay Sing h lay awake listening to the snores (鼾声) of the ghost. At midnight, he slipped off his bed. He placed a pillow in the centre of the bed, and covered it to make it look exactly like a sleeping man. Then he sat watchfully in a dark corner.
