1 . All over the world people are hooked on sports, which help them to strengthen their body and build their character.     1     They improve the participants’ physical skills, and provide entertainment for the audience as well.

Many people like to watch others play games.     2     Often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins. If they are crazy about the game or the player, then they’ll become their die-hard fans. Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in countries near the sea or in those with many rivers.     3     And think of people in cold countries. Masses of people love to skate or ski in Japan, Norway or Canada.

    4     Chinese boxing, also has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new, which started in the late of the nineteenth century. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. Water skiing, as a modern game, is one of the newest in the family of sports.

People from different countries or races may not be able to understand each other, but after a game, they get to know each other better and they often become good friends.     5     They learn to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace. They also learn to be competitive and optimistic, which will equip them for life challenges in the future.

2 . The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.

But just as in face to face communication，there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when online. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.     1    . For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread.     2    .

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.     3    . If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

    4    . Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good mariners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status.     5    , don’t ask such questions.

3 . While you are traveling abroad, cultural mistakes are more serious than linguistic mistakes, which can lead to serious misunderstanding and even ill-feeling between individuals.    1    

    2     In Mediterranean countries, if you don’t touch someone’s arm when talking to them or if you don’t greet them with kisses or a warm hug, you’ll be considered cold. But backslap(拍背) someone who isn’t a family member or a good friend in Korea, and you'll make them uncomfortable. In Thailand, the head is considered sacred—never even pat a child on the head.

In some countries, like China,Japan and some African nations, the food’s the thing, so don’t start chatting about your day's adventures while everyone else is digging into dinner.    3     It’s not because your group is unfriendly, but because meal times are for eating, not talking.

Take off your shoes when arriving at the door of a London dinner party and the hostess will find you uncivilized, but fail to remove your shoes before entering a home in Asia, Hawaii, or the Pacific Islands and you'll be considered disrespectful. So, if you see a row of shoes at the door, start undoing your laces.    4    

Once you are on the ground of a different country, remain highly sensitive to native behavior.    5     And don’t feel offended if something seems offensive—like queue jumping. After all, this is a global village, and we are all very different.

People have been making and flying kites for about 2, 000 years.     1     Some historians believe that the ancient Chinese may have started kite flying 2, 000 years ago. It is still a popular hobby in China, Japan and South Korea and in other countries of the Far East where beautifully decorated kites appear in different colours. In China there is even a special Kite Day on which children and adults fly kites. In Japan, families fly fish kites on Children’s Day.

Kites are made in many different sizes, colours and shapes.     2     It flies because air flows over and under the kite’s wing. The pressure under the wing helps the kite lift into the air.

    3     Early scientists sent kites up into the air to measure temperature at different heights. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin used a kite to prove that lightning was a form of electricity. He attached a metal key to the string of a kite. When lightning hit the kite, electricity passed down the string and Franklin got an electric shock. It was a very dangerous experiment that you shouldn’t copy.

Kites were also used to develop airplanes. The Wright Brothers experimented with kites before they flew the first airplane.     4     In World War I the Germans developed a large kite that could transport people to a submarine (underwater ship). Kites were also used to carry radio signals over long distances.

    5     Kite festivals are organised in many cities in all parts of the world.

7 . Ecotourism

    1     It is a new term in today’s tourism industry. But in an age of growing environmental awareness, it is not too difficult for us to imagine and understand this new form of holiday.

Ecotourism, which is considered as a kind of responsible tourism, is typically defined as travel to places where special and unusual plants, animals and cultural heritages are the main attractions.     2     Therefore, programs concerning the protection of some natural and cultural spots also form a part of ecotourism.

Ecotourism is developing at great speed. According to a recent report by the World Tourism Organization, ecotourism in recent years has enjoyed an annual growth of about 5% worldwide.     3     They include bird watching, hiking, diving, photography and taking part in various kinds of local cultural events.

If you love communing with nature, conserving the environment or improving the lives of people then ecotourism is an excellent way to see new and exciting places.     4     However, it looks like some smaller towns and country areas may well become the new destinations for people to visit tomorrow because they are rich in ecological, cultural and historical resources.

Ecotourism has been gaining increasing recognition and popularity mainly for the relaxing, natural and vivid experience it offers to tourists. People are attracted to nature and long to be close to it. However, a conflict between nature and human beings is unavoidable.     5    

Some people describe American society as a salad bowl while others see it as a melting pot. In a bowl of freshly tossed salad, all the ingredients are mixed together.    1    All the ingredients of a salad contribute to the finished product. They may be covered with the same dressing, but the green vegetables, tomatoes, lettuce and eggs can all be seen for what they are.

    2    Individual ethnic groups blend together, yet keep their cultural uniqueness. People may work together during the day at similar jobs and in the same companies, but at night they may return to their ethnic communities where their own individual culture directs their way of life.

The other concept, which is also used to describe American society, is the melting pot.    3    and yield a bit of what they were to become a new reality. The longer the soup is cooked, the better the taste and the more likely it will be for the mixture to dissolve. In this sense, America can surely be seen as a melting pot where people from all over the world come to live and work together forming one nation.

There are dozens of shared symbols.    4    In such a culture, symbols like the flag and the nation’s official song serve to break down the walls which separate ethnic groups.

Whether a salad bowl or a melting pot, America can best be described as a mixture of both.    5    

It is necessary to be reasonable and flexible enough to avoid conflicts as much as possible and live in peace with others.     1     If you have done all your best to avoid conflicts and you are still arguing, then read these effective tips on how to avoid conflicts.

In many countries of the world people do what is called house sitting. It means that if owners of the house are going away, they want someone to come into their home and look after the house and maybe pets while they are away.

In Australia, many people travel. After people retire, they might buy a van and travel all over the country.     1    

So if someone wants to travel or go away for some reason, they might want someone in their home to care for it and keep the gardens tidy. House sitters might have to care for pets. Also, quite a few people have swimming pools in their back yard and they need cleaning.    2     I feel it is a great way of seeing the country, because you go and stay in a new city, get to meet new people, and have time to go sightseeing in a new area.

    3     There are websites where you find the advertisements by people who want to travel, and by replying to the advertisement, you can make arrangements to go and look after their home.

There are some requirements to be a house sitter. You must be a trusted person, so that the home owner knows you will not steal anything. You must be able to go when the house owner wants you to go, so you need lots of free time.    4     You need to be good with pets, able to care for cats and dogs, or other pets they may have.

Some house sitting jobs are just for a few days or a couple of weeks while the house owners have a short holiday. Sometimes it is for much longer. We have had one house sit for six months, while the home owner travelled to Europe.

    5     Then you can travel to many different countries and stay there. One of the important things to get is references from the home owners where you have stayed. A reference is a written letter to say that you are trustworthy and have looked after their home well. You can show these letters to possible house sitting jobs and they know you will do a good job.
