2 . Cleaning up after an oil spill has always been a costly and time-consuming process that often harms wildlife and further damages the ocean environment. But now researchers at Northwestern University have developed a "smart sponge (海绵)“to clean up oil spills in the ocean.

This new approach is designed to only absorb oil, leaving the clean water behind without affecting ocean wildlife, according to a Northwestern news release. The secret of how the new sponge can selectively absorb only the oil lies in a nanocomposite (纳米复合材料)coating and a carbon-based structure that attracts oil and drives water away. The composite's 3D structure interacts with and sticks the oil, holding it until it is squeezed out.

The best part is that this composite can be used to coat any commercial sponge. All you have to do is apply a thin coating of it to the sponge and let it dry before use. The smart sponge can absorb oil up to 30 times of its own weight. Plus, it is reusable up to a dozen times. The researchers even came up with a plan on the best practices for the smart sponge. The sponge will come in large sheets that are rolled. While there are no limitations in the size, 2-3 feet width will be enough. And the sponge can be used on a beach after an oil spill or airdropped to absorb oil in the ocean.

While getting rid of fossil fuels is the longtime goal, its continued use requires the liquid to be transported long distances and with that comes the risk of oil spills. When these occur, having a safer, more effective method to clean the affected oceans and fragile beach environments will go a long way towards saving our ocean wildlife and coastlines.

1. What's special about the smart sponge?
A.Absorbing water quickly.
B.Helping transport fossil fuels.
C.Storing nanocomposite for a long time.
D.Consisting of oil-attracting structure.
2. What's talked about in paragraph 3?
A.The process of making sponges.
B.The effective way of transporting oil.
C.The plan to reduce oil consumption.
D.The practical application of the smart sponge.
3. What's the author's attitude towards the smart sponge?
A.Supportive.B.Skeptical.C.Concerned.D.Unclear.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Entertainment.B.Lifestyle.C.Invention.D.Advertisement.

3 . You can learn anything on the Internet, so why do I so often learn things I don't want to know? When I'm surfing the web, I want to be drawn in by articles on Europe's political history or the nature of the outer space, but I end up reading trivia (琐事) such as a menu from a Netherlands prison. Why am I not curious about the things I want to be curious about?

Curiosity feels as if it's out of your control, and trying to direct it sounds as challenging as forcing yourself to find a joke funny. But if you understand what arouses curiosity, you may be able to channel it a little better. Across evolutionary time, curious animals were more likely to survive because they learned about their environments; a food hunter that occasionally skipped a reliable feeding ground to explore might find an even better place to eat.

Humans, too, will give up a known payoff to explore the unknown. In one experiment, subjects were asked to choose one of four photos, each carrying some chance of paying a cash prize. Photos repeated, so subjects learned to pick the best-paying, but when a novel photo popped up, they chose it more often. This preference for something novel is, of course, the reason manufacturers constantly make changes to product packaging and advertising. But it's good to know about your environment even if it doesn't promise a reward right now; knowledge may be useless today but vital next week. Therefore, evolution has left us with a brain that can reward itself; satisfying curiosity feels pleasurable, so you explore the environment even when you don't expect any concrete payoff. Infants prefer to look at novel pictures compared with familiar ones. Preschoolers play longer with a mechanical toy if it's difficult to deduce how it works.

1. Why does the author ask the two questions in paragraph 1?
A.To seek solutions.B.To introduce the topic.
C.To present his curiosity.D.To express his amazement.
2. What can be learned about curiosity?
A.It's of great value.B.It's mostly under control.
C.It rarely exists in animals.D.It sometimes appears as a joke.
3. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.People make explorations for concrete payoff.
B.Curiosity guarantees people a pleasurable life.
C.The constant changes meet manufacturers' demand.
D.People would rather satisfy curiosity than get payoff.
4. What does the underlined word "deduce" in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Show off.B.Figure out.
C.Bear in mind.D.Pick up.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文,主要论述了传统食物是文化的重要组成部分,每一道菜都是了解文化的一扇窗户。

6 . There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our families often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.

On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of cultural identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride in their culture and means of coping with homesickness.

Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavour can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes in the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavours that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.

We should not only embrace our heritage (传统) through our culture’s food, but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window on culture, and it should be treated as such.

1. What’s the function of food mentioned in the text?
A.To help motivate homesickness.
B.To show cultural identity.
C.To reflect a country’s history.
D.To show a community’s superiority.
2. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The specific traditional food.
B.The national culture.
C.A traditional expression of food.
D.The old-fashioned taste.
3. Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurants?
A.To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
B.To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
C.To make the dishes popular among customers.
D.To present their own food culture in a new way.
4. What’s the author’s attitude towards different food cultures?
A.Negative.
B.Balanced.
C.Unfair.
D.Unchangeable.

8 . There are many traditions around the world that are interesting and fun, but there are also those that are bizarre (奇异的) and even a little cruel.

In Sweden it's common for parents to leave their babies outside to nap (小睡) even when the temperatures are below zero. Many of us would find this custom dangerous, but many Swedes actually consider it good for their babies. They believe that by exposing their young ones to their country's cold temperature they can help their babies to grow up healthily and protect them from diseases. They also believe doing so will help them sleep longer and better.

In Bali, Indonesia, babies are forbidden to touch the ground for three months. The reason is that during the baby's first months its connection to the “spirit” is still unbroken and clean and letting it touch the ground would defile it. For three months, the baby is constantly held in someone's arms―the father, mother, grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and even neighbours. After 105 days, a special ceremony called the Nyabutan is held where the baby touches Mother Earth for the first time.

In Guatemala, it's common to see babies being bathed with cold water. Maya mothers commonly practise this bizarre ritual (仪式) with the belief that it's beneficial to the baby's health. Bathing their babies with cold water is also an effective means to eliminate heat rashes, and this custom helps babies sleep better.

Some Indians allow their babies to be thrown from temple roofs as high as 50 feet. This strange custom started 500 years ago and continues to this day, though there's a movement to ban it for obvious reasons. However, Hindus believe that performing this ritual brings good luck and health to their babies. Below the roof is a bed sheet that's held tightly by several men. The baby lands safely on the sheet. The tradition's practitioners and believers strongly prove that it's safe, saying no babies have ever been injured.

1. What does the author think of the baby custom in Sweden?
A.It is interesting and fun.B.It is unique and thoughtful.
C.It is dangerous and a little cruel.D.It is beneficial and practical.
2. What does the underlined word “defile” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Make the best use of.B.Make something dirty or no longer pure.

3. In Guatemala babies are bathed with cold water ________.
A.to get rid of their heat rashes and make them sleep better
B.to prevent them from feeling hot during summer
C.in order to stop them from getting all kinds of illnesses
D.in order to bring good luck and health to those babies
4. Why do some Indians ask the baby custom to be stopped?
A.It is a new custom and many people hate it.
B.They think the custom leads to babies' injuries.
C.They have no religious belief.
D.Lots of babies have been seen injured in the past years.

9 . Have you ever looked at a fashionable item of clothing and felt confused? If so, your confusion may have made sense.

Several months ago, high fashion brand Balenciaga released a “T-shirt shirt”, which is a shirt sewn on the front of a T-shirt. The unusual design has certainly confused a lot of people.

But the “double shirt” isn’t fighting alone on the frontier of strange fashion. Ever since US shoe manufacturer Crocs released its famous hole-filled foam shoes, the so-called “ugly fashion” hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down, the Business of Fashion website noted.

British designer Paul Surridge believes that the rise of ugly fashion is a sign that people are bored with looking perfect all the time. “Fashion thrives(蓬勃发展) on novelty”, he told the Financial Times.

Indeed, fashion is all about changes. Something that’s considered uncool one minute can then turn out to be the latest must-have fashion item the next.

And in the eyes of US fashion writer Megan Collins, ugly doesn’t necessarily mean the design of the item is ugly. After all, ugly is something subjective. “Ugly fashion means ‘not the mainstream’——it is not what everyone’s wearing; it is not what the general population considers as ‘in’ right now,” she told style news site Fashionista.

But throughout the history of fashion, when any new trend appears, most people tend to hate it, before it eventually becomes loved. As Italian designer Miuccia Prada told The New York Times, “Maybe because it is newer, ugly is attractive. Ugly is exciting.”

Meanwhile, popular social media fashion bloggers also help people to pick up new ugly fashion trends. These bloggers express themselves through their clothes, showing their unique personalities and making comments on their clothing choices. However, as Clever-ish Magazine noted, just being comfortable in your own skin could actually be “the best look”.

“I personally love having a unique expression because without ugly fashion and diversity, we’d all look the same,” Australian fashion influencer(网红) and model Zanita Whittington told Fashionista. “I appreciate anything that’s out of the norm(规范).”

1. How does the author lead to the topic of the passage?
A.By telling a funny story.
B.By asking and answering questions.
C.By asking questions and giving examples.
D.By giving different comments from different people.
2. The underlined word “in” in the paragraph 6 could be replaced by ________.
A.uglyB.fashionable
C.affordableD.expensive
3. What will some social media fashion bloggers do to show their personalities?
A.They will dress themselves to look perfect.
B.They will try some new and exciting clothes.
C.They will make comments on others’ clothes choices.
D.They will express themselves by wearing ugly clothes.
4. What can we infer from Zanita Whittington’s words?
A.She is fond of ugly fashion trends.
B.She doesn’t care about fashion at all.
C.She hopes to be the same as others.
D.She wants to look ugly as a model.

10 . It was the toughest months after my husband Larry had returned from the navy. The only job available for him was in a city 6.5 hours away from where we lived. My illness made it impossible for me to stay with Larry in that city. So there we were, delaying our departure(离开) by passing time in a secondhand bookstore before the girls and I headed back to southwest Virginia. This was a precious time for us.

We joked as we continued our treasure hunt, all hoping to find the oldest, least expensive book. There was lots of laughter and hugging and kissing as we enjoyed each other’s company.

Only one other person was in the bookstore——a lovely, well-dressed woman about my age. I noticed her expensive clothes, shoes, and handbag. I wondered what it would be like to be rich enough to walk into a bookstore and have the money to buy any book my heart wanted. We were having so much fun, however, that I quickly forgot the woman.

Finally, I spied my perfect book! It was a hundred years old, and it was on my favorite time period——the Middle Ages. Oh, how I wanted that book! I quickly checked the inside cover for the price, and my heart fell.

“Oh, I wish I were rich,” I murmured(低语), as my eyes locked with the woman’s.

“It looks to me as though you already are,” she said, with a smile.

There was a long pause, and then my heart was filled with comprehension. I was rich. Very rich. I turned quickly to thank the woman for her gentle reminder, but she was gone!

Strangely enough, within days my husband received a job offer in southwest Virginia. In less than two weeks, he was hired, and we moved to the place that is now our home.

Thank for the angel. It was she that gave me God’s rich message of love and encouragement when I was at a loss.

1. What made the writer’s family separate soon?

D.The writer suffered from an illness.
2. What does the author feel the first time she saw the well-dressed woman?
