1 . Scientists in Michigan have developed a forest fire alarm system. It can not only monitor when a fire begins but also call for help. This battery-free device hangs in a tree and gains all the energy it needs from the natural swinging of branches. Such a sensor (传感器) could watch the woods for a decade without humans’ attention.

“For forest fire monitoring, you don’t need high amounts of energy,” says Cao Changyong, an engineer at Michigan State University, who led the team behind the new device. It recharges itself about every 10 minutes with just enough power to take a measurement. That’s plenty of time, Cao says, “to produce enough energy.”

There’s an obvious need for fast monitoring of faraway forests. Every year, fires burn millions of acres in the United States. Early findings also can save lives. Right now, forest fires are found from satellites or fire towers. Neither, Cao says, is as fast or low-cost as tree-hanging sensors would be.

Cao’s group faced some challenges in creating its new sensors. For example, these have to produce enough power to check the forest and send out a signal and that power source has to be used for longer time. To deal with the problems, they decided to change mechanical motion (机械运动) into electricity. The device to do this is known as a TENG short for triboelectric nanogenerator. Scientists have explored TENGS as one way to gain energy from the natural world, including harvesting energy from effects on tabletops, falling rain-even keyboards. The new TENG for forest use produces a current (电流) when a tree branch swings. That current is small, yet enough to power a thermometer   (温度计) to monitor the temperature changes signaling fire.

Cao says his team’s new model has not yet been tested over long time periods in the real world, but the device is ready. All he needs now is the money to build more of them.

1. What is special about Cao’s sensor?
A.It can save lives.B.It is shaped like a branch.
C.It is self-powered.D.It keeps power for about a day.
2. Which of the following is the benefit of the fire alarm system?
A.Recharging every minute.B.Monitoring the forest fires.
C.Measuring at a slow speed.D.Working for a longer time.
3. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Sending out a signal when a fire breaks out.B.Producing enough power to check the forest.
C.Turning mechanical energy into electrical power.D.Monitoring the temperature changes signaling a fire.
4. What problem is Cao’s new model facing for its long-time test?
A.It doesn’t work.B.It is of no use in fact.C.It needs enough money.D.It isn’t easily performed.

Old Folks Struggle With New Technology

Fang is a bright, lively,82-year-old woman from Beijing who is learning to use smartphone…but it’s been a struggle. “Technology advances so fast that     1     is supposed to make life easier is instead creating problems for us old people,” she says.

Fang grew up in a simpler age     2     you had to actually leave your house to shop, buy a train ticket or make a doctor’s appointment. Now all of these things     3     be done with a smartphone and,in some cases, only with a smartphone. Recently an elderly man in Dalian was unable to travel on the subway because     4     (enter) the subway,he had to have his QR health code scanned. “What is a Qrcode?” the man asked. “I have money to buy a ticket, why do I need a smartphone?” Admittedly, It is     5     criticism that senior citizens do not always carry a smartphone with them. In the end, he left the station, confused and embarrassed.

I can certainly sympathize with Fang and the man from Dalian. They have spent their almost entire lives contributing to society and now they feel     6    (exclude) from that society. Fortunately, some college students volunteer to teach the elderly how to use smartphones. However, teaching old folks about smartphones is only one part of the problem.

Many older people have physical and health issues. Poor eyesight makes it almost impossible     7     ( read)on small screens. And “leathery fingers”,the fingers     8    (sensitive),make it hard to use touchscreens. Perhaps these are problems that smartphone makers should try to resolve.

New solutions are going to be needed to make sure that the elderly     9     (not leave) behind the rest of society. If you have grandparents, or know some elderly people, lend a helping hand to them when they need it. And remember to be patient. New technology young people take for granted is not so much a great convenience     10     a bitter struggle for the elderly.

5 . Five years ago, French navy officer Jérôme Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardon understood how treacherous the journey would be, as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities. Yet, somehow, bar-tailed godwits routinely pass through the area uninjured. Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters.

This past January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began experiments designed to test Chardon’s idea. Researchers with a project led by Frédéric Jiguet from NMNH equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting edge animal tracking technology. The team members were ferried to remote islands in French Polynesia, where they attached tags (标签) using tracking technology. These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which bounced the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds—waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters.

The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear infrasound, the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear but that the researchers believe is the most likely signal birds would use to sense storms and tsunamis (海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind of golden-winged birds in the central and southeastern America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tornadoes (龙卷风) that killed 35 people. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.

The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential tsunami. “I think if there’s one wave that spreads across islands, we can get data from different species at different locations,” says Jiguet. “That will say it s worth continuing to tag and to develop local systems to better analyze this. There are chances that we will develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system.”

1. Which of the following best explains the word “treacherous” underlined in paragraph 1?
A.Strange.B.Boring.
C.Frequent.D.Dangerous.
2. What is the function of the tags?
A.Tracking natural disasters.B.Distinguishing bird species.
C.Guiding researchers to islands.D.Reporting the birds’ locations.
3. Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To prove an assumption.B.To clarify a concept.
C.To present a new topic.D.To make comparisons.
4. What might be the best title for the text?
A.How Can Birds Avoid Natural Disasters?
B.Can Birds Warn Us of Natural Disasters?
C.How Does a Warning System Function?
D.Can Birds Play a Role in Human Research?

6 . It’s currently December and Christmas is almost here. And what better way to spend time with your loved ones than sitting down to watch some classic Christmas movies? Listed below are four films that will make you laugh, cry or both this Yuletide (圣诞节期间).

The Grinch (2000)

This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey’s best performances. It was also originally a children’s book written by Dr Seuss, which I would recommend reading! It’s the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas, but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. It sounds cheesy and cliché (陈词滥调), but I promise it’s a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.

Love Actually (2003)

While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely Jove this film. It has a star-studded cast, featuring actors and actresses such as Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are lots of different sub-plots, so I recommend watching a dubbed version (配音版) in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.

Home Alone (1990)

This blockbuster (轰动一时的电影) is one of my favourite films of all time and I would watch it all year round if I could. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forget to take him on vacation with them. While the family are away, burglars (小偷) try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year old boy outsmart two grown men.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

You can’t have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this film. It’s not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It’s about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The storyline may seem a little childish, but you can enjoy it at any age. I cry every time I watch it and I’m 21!

1. In which film can you see Jim Carrey’s wonderful performance?
A.The Grinch.B.Love Actually.
C.Home Alone.D.Miracle on 34th Street.
2. What can we know about Love Actually?
A.It’s one of the authors favorite films.
B.We’d better watch a clubbed version.
C.It’s a film about the power of love and generosity.
D.Some handkerchief papers are necessary when you watch it.
3. What do the film Home Alone and The Grinch have in common?
A.They are very touching.
B.They are only fit for children.
C.They are funny and make people laugh a lot.
D.They are popular and tell a story about kids.
