5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Meet Hagen, a 6-year-old boy who recently celebrated his sixth birthday. Hagen is traveling with his family to Dallas with his amazing Buzz Lightyear(巴斯光年) toy. Traveling with kids is always busy, and the family had other things on their minds, so the tiny toy was unfortunately left behind.

Hagen’s mother said that when they landed, they thought they had gathered all their things and they headed to the taxi. It wasn’t until they were in the taxi that Hagen started crazily asking for his Buzz and his mother quickly realized that they did not have Buzz and he was still on the plane. Hagen was upset because he saw the toy as his best friend.

When the family understood this, it was too late to turn around their car heading for the family gathering as the plane had already departed(启程) for Little Rock, Arkansas. Hagen’s mother knows that losing a toy is never a pleasant feeling, especially for a 6-year-old and the toy is a big talking Buzz Lightyear action figure. So she had to lie that Buzz was on an awesome space task, and Hagen would get reunited with Buzz some day.

Well, LIT Ramp Agent Jason noticed Buzz all alone on the plane and his first idea was that he was probably here on a mission—and a mission did actually happen. Together with another colleague, Beth, Jason found out whose Buzz this was—there was a name on the foot and the airline’s contact information, so it wasn’t too hard—and they took Buzz on an adventure before sending him back.

Jason located Hagen according to name printed on the bottom of Buzz’s boot, ‘Hagen’. Only one passenger had flown on the plane with that name. That allowed them to locate the email of Hagen’s mother from their reservations. Then they posted the amazing pictures that Jason had taken with Buzz on his personal Facebook. The address of Hagen’s mother was given to Jason and he let Hagen’s mother know he’d be mailing him back to them.

Para. 1: Hagen got the package some days later.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。这篇文章列出了五个常见的园艺错误,并给出了如何避免这些错误的建议。

6 . Avoid These Five Gardening Mistakes

Much of gardening is learned by trial and error — that means, from mistakes. We have all been in that situation. Here is a list of five common gardening mistakes with advice on how to avoid them.

Not testing soil

Having the right pH level, a measure of acidity(酸性), for the soil is important for gardening success.     1    . Tomatoes, for example, grow best in soil with a pH between 6.0-6.8. Blueberry plants, however, will likely turn yellow and produce little if the pH is higher than 5.5. That is because nutrients are suitable for plants only at target pH levels.

Watering incorrectly

Most garden plants require 2.5 to nearly four centimeters of water weekly. The water could come from rainfall or from your home. Mold and bacterial(霉菌、细菌引起的) diseases, however, could spread if too much water becomes caught between plant parts.     2    . Make sure to direct water to roots, where it is needed. Avoid watering leaves, fruit and flowers.

Not composting(堆肥)

3    . It improves the drainage(排水) of heavy clay soil, increases the water-holding ability of sand and adds high-quality nutrients. Add compost into new beds, or add an amount equal to half the removed soil to individual planting holes.

    4

A plant that needs “full sun” will likely disappoint if planted in an area without sunshine. The same is true the other way around. And do not put “drought-tolerant(耐旱的)” plants, or plants that can survive long periods without water, in “poorly-draining, wet soil.” Choose the plants that are right for your growing conditions. The result will be a better-looking, healthier garden that requires less care and less work.

Improper mulching(用覆盖物覆盖)

Mulch is material made out of old leaves, wood or compost.     5    . It also prevents unwanted plants, or weeds from growing. So, it is an important part of every garden. Mulching incorrectly, however, can kill your plants.

A.Wrong plant, wrong place
B.Close your eyes to plants or flowers
C.It can keep water and heat in the soil
D.The pH level isn’t the same in different parts of the garden
E.Compost, made of food or plant waste, is a gardener’s best friend
F.Add five to seven centimeters of water around plants several times a day
G.Too much water can spread these problems from infected (传染) leaves to healthy ones

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了疫情期间,Hazel Mayfield一家过了与往常不一样的感恩节。

8 . Hazel Mayfield usually cooks the Thanksgiving meal for her extended family in Houston, Texas. She usually welcomes friends and neighbors who are eager to taste her fried turkey, green bean casserole, candied yams, homemade cornbread dressing, and dirty rice — just a few of her signature dishes (招牌菜). Known as Sugar Mama, because her grandchildren think she’s so sweet, the 91-year-old typically likes to do her own shopping for the ingredients to make her special dishes.

“My mother is the head cook of the family,” said Panulette Mouton, Mayfield’s daughter. “Because of her reputation (名声), you know, there’re people in and out all day and every family comes through. They want to get some of Sugar Mama’s cooking, and some of them would like to learn from her how to cook the food.”

But Mayfield hasn’t been to the grocery store since March. And there is little about Thanksgiving in 2020 that’s usual. Because of Covid-19, the deadly virus (病毒) that has killed so many people in the U.S. and spoiled life around the world, everything is different. Since limiting close face-to-face contact with others is the best way to reduce its spread, hundreds of thousands of American families have re-imagined the holiday with virtual celebrations and called off or delayed travel plans. There can only be small gatherings with people in their households in response to COVID-19.

This year, Mayfield’s family members, without exception, are lamenting the absence of a big gathering. They’ve explained to their young children and grandchildren why this year’s Thanksgiving is different. Mayfield’s youngest daughter, Michelle Sanders, says it’s difficult to help her grandchildren understand why they can’t see some of their other family members and why they have to stay at home, celebrating Thanksgiving all by themselves.

“It’s really hard, trying to explain to them,” Sanders said. “When you’re talking to them and they want to come over, you have to tell them no. They really don’t know how to be careful.” Sanders added, “And, they don’t understand that, being three, four, and six, you know they don’t really understand that. So, it’s...it’s really, really hard, and heartbreaking.”

1. Which of the following best describes Hazel Mayfield?
A.Helpful and kind-hearted.
B.Creative and enthusiastic.
C.Talented and practical.
D.Grateful and responsible.
2. What do we know about the effect of COVID-19 according to the passage?
A.People are cutting down holiday celebration expenses.
B.People are trying hard to get together to have more fun.
C.People have to make changes in their lifestyle to stay safe.
D.People have put more emphasis on the traditional customs.
3. What does the underlined word “lamenting” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Fascinated by.B.Upset about.
C.Ignorant of.D.Embarrassed at.
4. What can we infer from what Sanders said in the last paragraph?
A.Children are always careless on Thanksgiving Day.
B.It’s hard to help children deal with their problems.
C.Adults should show patience when talking with kids.
D.Children are too young to understand the situation.
