1 . At 12, my father decided to take me on a trip to France. I had never been out of the country before, so I was very excited. My aunt, my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable sites in Paris. None of us spoke much French but we loved the city.

We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our mastering what is honestly an excellent subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English.

We reached the end of the line and felt afraid when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then boarded with us.

Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer (转乘) and he didn’t want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train for an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and patted our hands gently at the stop. Then in his quiet way, he boarded the train to return the way he had come.

What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to persuade them to change their minds with this very story.

1. What happened to the author and his family on the train?
A.They couldn’t understand the signs of the train.
B.They failed to get off the train at the right time.
C.They had different opinions about where to go first.
D.They found it hard to communicate with the French.
2. How did the man help the author and his family?
A.He paid for their train tickets.B.He showed them the returning way.
C.He invited them to travel together.D.He led them to their place.
3. Which of the following can best describe the last paragraph?
A.Seeing is believing.B.Being kind is a good manner.
C.Travelling enriches one’s life.D.Helping others brings great pleasure.
4. What’s the purpose of the author’s writing the text?
A.To explain an unexpected problem.
B.To list the unbelievable sites in Paris.
C.To share an unforgettable foreign experience.
D.To show the importance of mastering a foreign language.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了出国旅游的时候,文化错误可能会出现比语言错误更严重的问题,并针对此问题给出了几个建议。

2 . Traveling abroad is becoming increasingly popular these years. Some people are afraid of making linguistic (语言的) mistakes while traveling. Actually, cultural mistakes may be more serious, which can lead to serious misunderstanding.     1     .

●Touching Someone

2     In Mediterranean countries, if you don’t touch someone’s arm when talking to him or if you don’t greet him with kisses or a warm hug, you’ll be considered cold. However, if you backslap (拍背) someone who isn’t a family member or a good friend in Korea, you’ll make him uncomfortable.

In Thailand, the head is considered sacred — never even pat a child on the head.

●Talking over Dinner

In some countries, like China, Japan and some African nations, food is important, so don’t start chatting about your day’s adventures while everyone else is digging into dinner.     3     It’s not because your group is unfriendly, but because mealtimes are for eating, not talking.

●Removing Your Shoes or Not

Take off your shoes when arriving at the door of a London dinner party and the hostess will find you rude, but fail to remove your shoes before entering a home in Asia, Hawaii, or the Pacific Islands and you’ll be considered disrespectful. So, if you see a row of shoes at the door, start undoing your shoelaces.     4    .

Once you are on the ground of a different country, remain highly sensitive to native behavior.     5     And don’t feel offended if something seems offensive — like queue-jumping. After all, this is a global village, and we are all very different.

A.If not, keep the shoes on.
B.You’ll be likely to meet with no response.
C.Never be completely surprised by anything.
D.Personal spaces are different among countries.
E.As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
F.Watch out for the following cultural mistakes and try to avoid them.
G.The linguistic mistake means that someone is not fully expressing his idea.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。报道了16岁的Julia Ruelle等女孩,参加为期五天的独木舟和露营冒险活动的事迹,在活动中,她们远离电子产品。

3 . Returning to nature

Imagine getting the chance to go camping for five days. It would be an adventure (冒险) in the wild. You could row on a lake every day and leave your smartphone at home. Would you want to try this?

In June, four teenage girls from Minnesota, US, went camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (边界水域泛舟区). They had a great time——even without their smartphones.

Julia Ruelle, 16, put the group together. Earlier this year, she won an essay contest sponsored (赞助) by a company. The award was a five-day canoe and camping adventure with up to three friends. No parents or guides would be there. This award was supposed to encourage kids to be less dependent on technology.

Ruelle had been to the area before, but she had always gone with her parents. Sharing the experience with friends would be very different. She invited three friends: Anna Wander, Madeline Wilson, and Julianna Torelli.

They came up with a daily plan. “We would wake up early every day. We were done paddling (划桨) by noon. We ate lunch at the campsite. Then it was time for hammocks (吊床), reading, writing, making friendship bracelets (手链), talking and napping,” Ruelle said.

“I’m a lot less worried about things,” Wander said when asked how she felt without her cellphone. Her favorite thing to do was lie in her hammock and look at the lake. Torelli enjoyed cooking. She made blueberry pancakes and sandwiches.

No one felt hungry or homesick. “Mental (心理的) health can be improved so much. It really helps to get away and reconnect with yourself,” Ruelle said.

1. The camping trip was unique because the girls _____.
A.had to live on a boat for several days
B.needed to finish many tasks
C.had to live without their smartphones
D.needed to find a guide on their own
2. Julia Ruelle got the chance to camp by _____.
A.not using her smartphone at school
B.asking her parents for help
C.working in a company
D.winning an essay contest
3. How did the girls feel at the end of the trip?
A.Worried.B.Happy.
C.Hungry.D.Homesick.
4. What do we know from the story?
A.It is easy to get lost without our phones.
B.The girls didn’t make any camping plans.
C.Wilson enjoyed making pancakes and sandwiches.
D.Using smartphones less can improve our mental health.

4 . With the summer holiday just around the corner, it seems like everybody is busy planning their vacations.

Travel off-season.

Go to your desired destination (目的地) while the demand is low and make use of huge discounts (折扣). During the peak season, the hotel and flight prices increase quickly.     1

Save on hotels.

Look for places that do not charge (收费) extra for children if they use the existing (现有的) bedding.     2     If you and your family are going to stay for a longer period, renting a small local apartment is a good choice.

    3

Planning your meals is another way to reduce your travel costs. During your family trip, try new food the locals eat, which will save money.

Don’t hesitate (犹豫) to bargain (讲价).

Tourist-heavy places are known for overcharging for just about everything. Clothes, travel goodies, souvenirs, etc., are very expensive at these places.     4     Bargain hard to get the best price.

Choose local transportation.

5     Instead, take buses, railways or subways, which are always cheaper. If you are planning to stay for a while, you can consider renting a car.

5 . Philadelphia is a city known for many things. It is where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, and it was also the first capital of the United States.     1     It is home to nearly 3,000 murals (壁画) painted on the side of homes and buildings around the city. That’s more murals than any other city on Earth.     2

More than 20 years ago, a New Jersey artist named Jane Golden started a program pairing troubled youth with artists to paint murals on a few buildings around the city.     3    The teenagers involved helped to create magnificent pieces of art, and there were other, even more important, benefits. The young people learned to cooperate and get along with many different kinds of people during the painting. They learned to be responsible, because they needed to follow a schedule to make sure the murals were completed.     4    It is hard for anyone to see the spectacular designs and not feel proud to be a part of Philadelphia.

Take a walk around some of the poorest neighborhoods in Philadelphia and you will find beautiful works of art on the sides and fronts of buildings. Of course the murals are not just in poor neighborhoods, but richer ones as well. Special buses take tourists to different parts of the city to see the various murals, which show the diverse ethnic groups that call Philadelphia home.

5     It is also a model for other cities throughout America seeking to help troubled youth.

A.How did this come to be?
B.What happened to the murals on Earth?
C.They also learned to take pride in their community.
D.But one fact about Philadelphia is not so well-known.
E.From this small project, something magical happened.
F.The program encouraged troubled youth to paint together with their teachers.
G.As a result of its success, the murals program has now become the nation’s largest public art program.
