3 . Suddenly screams echo through the forest as alarmed animals warn each other of a predator’s (食肉动物) approach. Lying on my stomach with my camera in front of me, I’ve been watching a nearby stream for hours, waiting. This may be it!
Yes! A 380-pound lioness steps from the trees, heading towards the stream. She crouches (蹲伏) down to drink. She’s only 50 yards away. She stands up and begins to walk towards me, not knowing I’m there. When she’s just about 20 yards away, I move my camera slightly. I don’t want to shock or panic her. She freezes for a moment, then take a crouching position and continues towards me. I’m thinking, “Uh-oh, I’m about to become cat food!” I’ve approached lions before, but now the lion approaches me.
If I stand up and yell, will she leave? Maybe not. If I stand up and run, will she chase me? Probably! So I decided to stay put.
The lioness comes closer. Now she’s only about four yards from me—the closest distance that still allows me to focus my camera lens. Surprisingly, she lies down, posing like a statue in front of me. This makes me feel very small and humble (卑微的). Then she rolls over and looks at me upside down! She seems a little puzzled and appears to be trying to figure me out —Hmm, are you suitable to be eaten? You don’t look dangerous.
Breathe slowly, I remind myself, with my heart beating fast. I carefully back up my tripod (三脚架) just a bit to focus and shoot the picture. Suddenly, she leaps up. In a flash, she runs away, leaving me overwhelmed with emotion.
Getting this photograph took a long time. I spent two years waiting for a permit to track the extremely rare Asiatic lions in the Gir Forest of India and spent three months on foot searching for them. The experience felt like a gift from the forest.

My uncle was a forest officer of Pakhirrlay Island and this time he brought me there.
His house was in the forest. When we arrived, Sambhu saw us and rushed to open the garden gate. He was an elderly man who did my uncle’s cooking and other household work.
“How are you?” I called out.
“I’m all right.” he said, “but Payal isn’t.”
My uncle, who walked ahead of us, stopped.
“Why Sambhu, what is wrong with our friend?”
“From the day you left, she hasn’t been eating properly.”
My uncle looked worried.
“Who is Payal?” I asked Sambhu. “Why! Don’t you know? Here she is.”
I turned round. My heart skipped a beat. There was Payal, a well-trained dog, giving my uncle a warm welcome by licking (舔) his face.
Then she caught sight of me and came forward. I stood still while she sniffed my all over. Later I was told that Payal’s mother was killed when she was only ten days old. I felt sorry for her.
Soon my uncle left for work. I wondered how to pass my time. There was a small pond behind the house and I liked to sit beside it. I got up. Immediately Payal moved her tail to show she had seen me move. I could bear it no longer, this feeling of being constantly watched by two silent eyes. I walked off angrily and sat beside the pond.
WOOSH!!! I heard a splashing sound. I looked up. Payal had dived into the water and was swimming in the pond. Soon she came out of the pond and sat breathing behind me. Then Payal growled(咆哮).
After a while, Payal growled again. This time there was a note of urgency in her growl. I could not help turning back and looking at her. She was staring at something. I looked in the same direction and broke into a cold sweat! There was a snake less than six feet away!

It was dark and gloomy as the dark night swallowed the dense forest. The clear, starry skies in the backdrop (背景) made for a fitting view as the young koala bear made his way home along the river.
It was his first day out to search for food. He remembered every word that his mom said to him as he made his way back. But the words, “be back before dark,” were haunting (萦绕) him the most.
But the little bear lost track of time as the sun started to move towards the horizons.
The darkness had changed all that. His only guiding light was the shining north star in the sky, another advice from his mother which he refused to forget.
Suddenly, the north star disappeared. It seemed it was swallowed in the same blackness which had taken over the jungle.
But there was light, a raging light which seemed different to the little koala. It couldn’t be the sun, he thought.
It seemed it was getting nearer. The little bear stopped dead in his tracks. This didn’t seem right. Suddenly, a heat wave hit him in the face as he was surrounded by flames.
Battered and bruised (遍体鳞伤), the koala ran away from the flames. He could feel the fire chasing him, as the heat got stronger. He felt it creeping up his back almost reaching his fluffy ears. He was scared to death.
He longed to be home with his mom, away from this disorder. However, he was panicking, not knowing what to do. The heat was getting unbearable. He saw a hollow tree trunk in the distance. The little bear dived into it, hoping to find some relief from the flames.
But the unforgiving flames made him realize his mistake almost immediately. The poor soul looked on as the flames started to eat away at the trunk. The dryness made it all the more delicious for this fire monster to feast on the dead tree. The heat had made the little bear exhausted. He used the last bit of energy which he had left to run from the trunk, escaping from the flames.

9 . On Friday morning when 53-year-old Thong Pham broke into the house through the unlocked back door, he took a steak knife from the kitchen.
It was dark, and the family didn't know what Marley was barking (吠) at. Taylor, Amber and their girls Finley, 6, and Sadie, 4, soon woke up and came downstairs, too. “Well, it was dark so we couldn't see anything, only could hear Marley,” Amber recalled, saying her husband then went for the lights. “And once he turned the hall light on, we realized that the guy was holed up in the corner trying to hide.”
“So I think he got to the front door and realized he couldn't get out, and by that point in time, Marley's got him cornered,” Taylor said. Pham slashed (砍) both Marley and Taylor, and blood went everywhere. Taylor shared a video summary to his Facebook page, where he said Marley was stabbed (刺) up to six times, mostly around the head and neck area. “And as I pulled back, blood shot out of my arm,” Taylor continued. “She got him pretty good and I got him pretty good in the face.”
“But it was really hard because I was trying to make sure that my husband wasn't going to die,” Amber explained, adding that she was trying to protect their two girls. “When he realized that the two girls were in the house, that's when he kind of backed up and started running. "
Taylor expressed gratitude to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. And the family is thankful for their dog Marley.
“She's our hero,” Amber said. “If it hadn't been for her, that guy could have gone in the...he could have gone to their rooms or something.” Taylor added, “Yeah, I mean, the story plays out very differently if Marley's not there.”
