文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一只老鼠想要吃铁轨上的掉落的香蕉饼,结果被一只乌鸦抢去了,老鼠十分沮丧和绝望。

1 . The second platform of this far-famed North station, under the lengthy railway track, lays our “mighty mice kingdom.” I was born here on a rainy November night. Since then, the deafening trains accompanied me to sleep and woke me up early in the morning. The mountainous waste, the irregular black stones, the man in white waving the flags, people rushing towards their future, the roaring trains, the frequent announcements. All these have been close to my heart since I was born.

In the midst of the track, I saw a delicious piece of banana fritters that might have been thrown out of the train by someone. My eyes shone bright, and my mouth watered. My feet paced towards the yummy heavenly treat. Suddenly, the air was blowing violently, and my skin’s hair stood up again. I ran back to the hole. The Island Express train came and passed by in a flash of a second. My eyes became yellowish, dreaming of the mouth-watering banana fritters.

I advanced slowly, then two feet hurriedly, and finally, my hands were about to touch the crispy skin of the banana fritters. “Thud…” a cruel crow kidnapped my meal, destroyed my dreams and flew away. The flood of happiness inside my heart turned to a stormy sea. It was a public secret that I led a poverty-stricken life since the mice kingdom collapsed in 1999.

Again, the tiny buds of air around me was blowing, and I ran back to the hole. Dodger Express was passing by. The train made mocking (嘲笑的) sounds at me. “Loser”…. “Loser”…. A stone toppled and fell on my head. I hated myself, hated everything. I fell asleep to escape from this world of embarrassments.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Frog is a wise and brave frog, living happily with his neighbors as well as good friends – Duck, Pig, Hare and Rat. One day, dark clouds were gathering in the sky, hiding the sun from view. “It’s going to rain,” thought Frog happily. The first drops were already falling on his bare skin. Frog loved the rain. He danced for joy as the raindrops fell thick and fast, which was a bit too much even for Frog.

He ran home dripping wet and made himself a nice hot cup of tea. The raindrops pattered against the window but it was cozy inside. After three days of rain however, Frog began to feel restless. He wondered how his friends were, because he hadn’t seen them since the rain started.

On the fifth day, the river began to rise. It wasn’t long before water came streaming into Frog’s house. Full of worry, he hurried over to Duck’s house only to find it was flooded as well. Wading (蹚) through the watery landscape, they decided to go to Pig’s house. Pig was leaning out of his attic (阁楼) window. “All my things are wet,” he cried desperately. The room was in a mess, with tables and chairs floating around. “Let’s go and see Hare,” suggested Frog.

Hare’s house was on an island in the middle of the water. Hare stood at the door and waved to them. “Come inside,” he shouted. “It’s dry in here.” Gratefully, they dried themselves in front of the stove and told Hare how their houses had been flooded. Hare invited them to stay as there’s plenty of room and plenty of food in the house. So they all sat down to a big pot of stew (炖菜) Hare had made. So hungry were they that they ate everything up. Then they settled down to a cosy evening and stayed there for days, while outside it kept raining.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述Lillian水中救袋鼠的故事。

5 . Lillian, 17, had just started working as a lifesaver at a beach in Australia on New Year’s Eve when beach-goers started to point and shout at the water. The workers quickly examined the situation and saw that a kangaroo had jumped out of the bushes (灌木丛) — straight into the sea.

The animal seemed confused by the fishermen standing on the rocks. So instead of turning back and heading back into the bushes, it jumped right into the water! The poor thing bobbed(摆动)around in the waves and went underwater several times before Lillian decided to take action.

As with any other animal rescue, it’s important to approach the situation with prudence. Wild animals that are stressed can become dangerous to their rescuers, and Lillian was aware of the risks as she took her rescue board and hit the water at a run. “It just didn’t want to come on to the beach because it was kind of scared,” she said. “I was trying to figure out how to get it on the board. But considering that it’s a wild animal, even though I was helping, I wouldn’t want to be hurt by it or make it more stressed out.”

As beach-goers recorded the rescue on their phones,Lillian paddled (用浆划船) behind the animal carefully and guided the kangaroo onto the beach. As soon as Lillian’s feet touched the sand, the beach erupted in cheers for her!“It was quite special. As people there were cheering and clapping, the kangaroo was just sitting there up in the bushes staring at me, as if it was conveying something with its shining eyes,” Lillian said. “I didn’t think that was going to ever be my first rescue, I may have more rescues in the future, but none would be as memorable as this one.”

6 . Dorothy and her friends the Scarecrow (稻草人), the Tinman (铁皮人) were walking through the forest with Toto. Suddenly, a great Lion came running at them from the trees. With one blow of his paw, he turned the Scarecrow over and over to the edge of the road, and then he struck at the Tinman with his sharp claws. But, to the Lion’s surprise, he could make no impression on the tin, although the Tinman fell over in the road and lay still. Then little Toto ran up to the Lion and started barking. The Lion was going to hit him too, but Dorothy came between him and the dog, shouting:

“Don’t you dare to bite Toto! A big animal like you is going to bite this poor little dog? You are nothing but a coward (胆小鬼)!”

The Lion’s face suddenly changed from mad to sad.

“I know it,” said the Lion, hanging his head in shame. “I’ve always known it. But how can I help it?” he sighed.

“Look at what you did to Scarecrow!” said Dorothy. She picked up the Scarecrow and set him upon his feet, while she put him into shape again.

“I’m terribly sorry, Scarecrow,” said the Lion. “You seemed so scary that I had to try and make you run away. Usually, when people and animals see me, they run, but you didn’t.”

“I can’t help being scared. Whenever there is danger, my heart beats fast.”

“Well,” said the Tinman, “maybe you can join us. I have no heart and Scarecrow has no brain. Dorothy and the little dog are dying to go home, very far away. We are going to find the Wizard of Oz for help. Why not come with us and ask him for courage?”

“But I am scared to go!” said the Lion.

“Everything will be fine,” comforted Dorothy. “There’s nothing to fear when we are all together. We’ll all become better.”

9 . Superheroes come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, as is the case here, they even have tails! On October 11, 2021, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) honored Bear, an Australian Koolie, with the “Animal of the Year” Award.

“We think Bear really deserved (应得) this award because he’s been such a good boy in helping us find and rescue a lot of koalas, especially during the bushfires. He works throughout the year to help us in our job to make a better and safer place for koalas,” says Bear’s owner, Dr. Romane Cristescu of the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Bear’s backstory is all too familiar for rescue dogs. His previous owners found his “endless energy and uncontrollable love for play” too much to control and decided to give him up for adoption (收养). They reached out to the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Detection Dogs for Conservation team. Within minutes, the trainers knew he would be a perfect rescue dog. Bear owned a good sense of smell. More importantly, he had no interest in killing the animals he found. All he wanted to do was play!

Between November 2019 and April 2020, the brave canine managed to find out over 100 injured koalas in forests. In May 2020, Cristescu told Newsweek,“We have found some koalas with burns, but many have less visible injuries. We have found some koalas seriously injured. We also have found koalas that are too young to be on their own in the bush and must have been separated from their mums during the fire.

“Bear is a truly amazing dog highlighting the important and positive relationships between animals and humans,” James Sawyer, the UK director of IFAW, said.

1. Why was Bear honored the “Animal of the Year” Award?
A.He had saved his owner s life.B.He had helped put out bushfires.

10 . When Sugar arrived at the Exploits Valley SPCA in July, he had a disease related to breathing that required medication. Therefore, he needed to stay at the shelter a bit longer than other animals before he could be adopted (收养).

While Sugar recovered, he developed a close relationship with all of the shelter staff members and volunteers, and loved showing off what a sweet little cat he was. “He was extremely popular from the beginning,” Sarah, a worker of the Exploits Valley SPCA said.

One of the volunteers who Sugar saw a lot was Glen. Glen has been volunteering at the shelter for the past 30 years and really loved it. He was often arranged to clean the room where Sugar was staying, and every time Sugar saw Glen, he got so excited. “Sugar would shout loudly at Glen to make him stop doing his work,” Sarah said. Every time Glen passed by Sugar, Sugar would meow (喵喵) endlessly until Glen finally gave him some love and attention.

Over the past 30 years, Glen had fallen in love with countless cats, but still managed to see them off to their forever homes. Something about Sugar was different, though. The relationship between Glen and Sugar was clearly special. Glen certainly hadn’t had any plans to adopt a cat. After a while, though, it became clear that Sugar wasn’t going to be happy unless he was always by Glen’s side. He knew what he had to do.

Sugar has now settled into his new home and lived a loving life. Every time Glen wakes up and sees Sugar, he knows he made the right decision.

1. What can we know about Sugar at the shelter?
