3 . Stripy and Jake are baby bears. They are fed by bottle and play around happily. Other bear orphans are sitting in the trees when Ben Kilham goes into their area.

Kilham, an American bear whisperer, lives in the woods of New Hampshire. His life work is all about understanding black bears, winning him not just international fame, but also greater insight into humankind.

From the bear photos and paintings on the wall to the three little wooden bears welcoming visitors at the entrance, everything in his home shows his passion. So does the nearby 3-hectare area. This is where he cares for orphan baby bears that are entrusted (委托) to him each year by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. With their mothers perhaps shot dead or knocked down by a car, Kilham cares for the baby bears. He makes sure they grow up safe and well, before releasing them back into the wild at the age of 18 months.

In addition, he observes adult bears in the wild. His dedication to black bears has made   him such an expert that China asked for his help with the giant panda. After a quarter of a century of study, Kilham has no doubt that bears are as close to humans as great apes, even though, as he says, “apes are our closest genetic relatives.”

Kilham has released 165 bears back into the wild and recorded more than 1,500 black bear interactions in nature. Recently his work led to a PhD in environmental sciences. He has written articles in National Geographic and a popular book, Among the Bears, which came out in 2002.

His goal is to raise awareness of caring about bears feared and hunted in the United States. Around 10 to 15 percent of New Hampshire’s 5,000 to 6,000 bears are killed every year in the hunting season.

“Bears are not interested in people. They are afraid of us. We can live very easily with bears; it’s a matter of educating the public,” says Kilham.

1. What is Ben Kilham’s daily job mainly about?
A.Studying different kinds of wild animals.
B.Protecting humans from being hurt by bears.
C.Training bears to communicate with humans.
D.Taking care of baby bears that lost their mothers.
2. What does the underlined word “dedication” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Devotion.B.Exposure.
C.Contribution.D.Assistance.
3. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A.To call on people to protect the environment.
B.To tell people to keep away from black bears.
C.To tell people about Ben Kilham and his studies.
D.To introduce Ben Kilham and his book—Among the Bears.

7 . 15 years ago, Erin Merryn met a kitten who needed a home when she was a college student.

He jumped into her arms and refused to let her go.

“I was attached immediately and decided that I would take a risk and try hiding a kitten in my college dorm where animals are obviously not allowed,” Erin recalled.

A week later she was caught and given 48 hours to remove the cat. After several phone calls, Erin was able to find an old lady to take Bailey, the kitten. But Bailey did not get along with his new housemate. As soon as Erin learned that he would be sent away, she immediately offered to take him back. “I plotted for a month to convince my parents to let me keep him.” said Erin.

8 . Government in Tibet have denied the permanent(永久的) closure of Mount Qomolangma National Nature Reserve.

The announcement came after a report went viral online claiming the base camp of the world's highest mountain was "permanently closed due to heavy pollution" and caused a universal misunderstanding.

Mount Qomolangma National Nature Reserve was set up in 1988. Covering an area of more than 33, 800 square km, it is home to one of the world's weakest ecosystems.

Kelsang, deputy director of the reserve administration, said ordinary tourists are allowed to visit areas around Rongpo Monastery, almost 5, 000 meters above sea level. As for travelers who have a climbing permit, they can go to the base camp at an altitude of 5, 200 meters. The mountaineering activities have been permitted by the regional forestry department.

To protect the environment surrounding Mount Qomolangma, China carried out three major clean-ups at an altitude of 5, 200 meters and above last spring, collecting eight tonnes of household wastes, human wastes and mountaineering trash. This year, the cleanup will continue, and the remains of mountaineering victims(受害者) at above 8, 000 meters will be centrally dealt with for the first time. Meanwhile, the number of people who stay at the base camp will be kept under 300.

Recently, there are 85 wildlife protectors in the reserve, and 1, 000 herders have part-time jobs going around and cleaning up garbage.

These measures aim to strike a balance between various demands such as environmental protection, local poverty relief, mountaineering and education, said Wang Shen, county chief of Dingri at the mountain foot.

9 . Hidden away in the mountains of western Tanzania is one of the largest lakes in the world: Lake Tanganyika.

Environmentalists want to protect the beauty and biological diversity of this area from the harmful effects of overfishing and deforestation. However, in order to do this, they need the cooperation of people in the nearby village of Mahale. In this poor community, malaria and typhoid (疟疾和伤寒) are spreading, there is little access to doctors and 13% of children die before age 5. How can we expect people who cannot save their own children to care about saving the environment?

While it is true that the Mahale villagers are suffering, environmentalists argue that Lake Tanganyika is in an equally terrible condition. This lake is home to hundreds of fish species found nowhere else on the globe. Eighty mammal species live in the surrounding forests and mountains. 90% of Tanzania’s endangered chimpanzees live in this area. Damage to this ecosystem will result in untold losses. Furthermore, environmentalists see the destruction of the environment as a direct function of the villagers’ poverty (贫穷): as the fish population decreases, people are forced to clear more land to grow rice and corn. As they clear more land, the soil run-off from deforestation further reduces the fish population, making it even more difficult for people to survive on fishing alone. This cycle harms both the Mahale villagers and the environment.

To meet their goal of protecting Lake Tanganyika, environmentalists are now using a many-sided approach in Mahale: helping the villagers gain access to healthcare, educating fishermen and farmers about the effect of deforestation and their own role in the decreasing fish population, and protecting areas of the lake where fish lay eggs. Since natural resources can be the tool by which the people of Tanzania work themselves out of poverty, it is essential that these resources are managed well. By combining health services with protection activity, we can begin to heal the suffering in western Tanzania, for people and the land alike.

1. What do we know about Lake Tanganyika from the passage?
A.It leads to the people’s poverty.
B.It faces a serious situation now.
C.It is the largest lake in the world.
D.It’s home to some unique animals in the world.
2. Which of the following might environmentalists agree with?
A.Saving lives is more important than saving the lake.
B.Offering the locals healthcare directly contributes to less fishing of the lake.
C.Educating the locals can promote their awareness of environmental protection.
D.Gaining access to natural resources is the only way for locals to fight poverty.
3. What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Protecting Lake Tanganyika
B.The Poor Life of Villagers in Mahale
C.The Importance of Lake Tanganyika
D.Villagers in Mahale and Lake Tanganyika

10 . For thousands of years, humans have built cities. Some of our oldest cities have managed to maintain pieces of their original characteristics while others have disappeared completely.

One of these lost cities belonged to the Anasazi people who lived in Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. They built houses along the river that ran through the valley. For nearly 300 years, the Chaco Canyon was the population center of many desert cities. Now nothing is left of this busy city but ruins. Scientists think that drought may have made the Anasazi’s food hard to get or that some kind of disease killed off many of the people. However, no one knows for sure what happened to the people of the Chaco Canyon. Another lost city sits high atop the Andes Mountains in Peru: the city of Machu Picchu. It was once among the most powerful cities in South America. It was home to the Incan emperor. In 1527, its citizens packed up their belongings and moved for unknown reasons. Scientists guess that smallpox, a disease brought by European explorers, was the cause of Machu Picchu’s downfall. Today, tourists from all over the world climb thousands of steep stone steps to view the ruins of this once great city. Yet another city that is no more was called Pompeii. This was one of the wealthiest cities of ancient Italy. This beautiful seaside city was a lively center of trade. However, a storm of lava, smoke, and ash from Mt. Vesuvius buried the city of Pompeii, putting an end to its prosperity. Scientists have studied the ruins of Pompeii, which led to new discoveries about ancient civilizations of Europe.

Humans have always built cities as centers for trade, business, and family life. Cities that have been lost provide information about the past, helping to inform our future. By studying lost cities, we can learn how to preserve our current cities.

A.it was the center of the Inca Empire
B.it was located high atop the Andes Mountains
C.it was founded by powerful European explorers
D.it is visited by numerous visitors throughout the world
2. The writer introduces the three lost cities mainly by _______.
A.making a comparisonB.stating causes and effects
C.expressing his own opinionsD.listing numbers and examples
3. What message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.We should set up powerful cities for a competitive world.
B.We should pass on certain customs of ancient civilizations.
C.We should figure out how to protect our cities from disease and starvation.
D.We should learn from the past to ensure that we do not lose cities in the future.
