Tea is one of the most favored drinks in our life. However, the origin of tea is lost among history     1     tales. What can be roughly confirmed is that tea originated in the southwest of China. According to ancient stories, the first person     2    ( discover) the effects of tea is said to be Shennong - the father of agriculture and herbal medicine in China. It     3    ( say) that Shennong once tried 72different kinds of poisonous plants in a day and he     4    ( lie) on the ground, barely alive. At this moment, he noticed several rather fragrant leaves     5    (drop) from the tree beside him. Out of curiosity and habit, Shennong put the leaves    6     his mouth and chewed them slowly. After a little while, he felt well and     7    ( energy) again. So he picked more leaves to eat and thus cleared    8    (he) body from poison.

The ancient Chinese medical book     9    ( call) Shennong Bencaojing states that"Tea tastes bitter. Drinking it, one can think quicker, sleep less, move more swiftly, and see     10     clearly."This then was the earliest book to record the medicinal effects of tea.

3 . The world's first-known nursery for baby giant manta rays(蝠鲼) has been discovered hidden away in the Gulf of Mexico, the place of 70 miles off the coast of Texas, after studying decades of giant manta ray data from the area by the scientists.

Where the baby manta rays grow up has long troubled scientists, as they are rarely spotted in the four to five years it takes them to become adults, when they can often grow to more than 20ft wide.

In the study Mr Stewart and colleagues describe a reef (暗礁)---filled with mantas of all ages---where the sea floor runs down into deeper water. He said "We think they may be feeding on specific types of zooplankton(浮游生物) there, then migrating up toward the surface, where we saw them. They might be hanging around the banks because it could be a little safer than open water. We’ve seen them so rarely that we know very little about these baby manta rays. We don‘t know how far they move, or exactly what they feed on, or all of the habitats these access.”

Giant manta rays are listed as species dying out by protectors, although actual population numbers of the mysterious "gentle giant" are hard to calculate. Sightings of the closely-related reef manta, however, have dropped by 90 percent in regions of southeast Asia in the past decade, according to a study.

Fishing is considered the biggest threat to giant manta numbers, both intentional and accidental. Their gill plates(腮下肉)- the parts through which they filter(过滤) their food from seawater-are sold in China for medical purposes, while they often end up as something caught by mistake due to their huge wings.

1. Where do the baby manta rays probably grow up according to the study?
A.In the deep water area.
B.On the surface of the sea water.

B.Manta rays prefer the open water to the banks.
C.The scientists have known much about manta rays.
D.Manta rays are fond of eating on the sea surface.
3. What is the main reason for the decrease of giant manta rays?
A.The habitat environment becomes worse.
B.They are overfished by people
C.They are not very difficult to catch.
D.People can see the reef manta much less than before.
4. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
B.Warn people of their wrong behaviors.
C.Introduce some knowledge of the fish.
D.Give examples to support his point.

7 . On a cool morning, Wilson Kasaine heads out along a dirt path in southern Kenya. His calmness makes it easy to forget that he’s tracking one of the most dangerous animals in the world. Kasaine is tracking lions—especially one lion called Marti, who is the real-life Lion King of Selenkay Conservancy.

Tracking lions on foot may sound like a death wish, but Kasaine has been doing it for most of his life. Born into a traditional Maasai family he quickly grew to understand the beauty and danger of wildlife. Living with big wild animals forces him to develop a good sense of where they have been and where they may be going. During his 12-kilometer walks to and from school, he learned how to tell the paw prints (爪印) of a lion from those of other animals.

Growing up, Kasaine knew that improving his tracking abilities would help him avoid surprise meetings with dangerous animals. For many Maasai, tracking is mainly a matter of self-protection. But Kasaine is tracking lions to meet them and to protect them. He leads a small group of wide-eyed tourists over the red sandy path, searching for the lion that has left upon it his prints.

Each year, thousands of tourists crowd Kenya’s national parks to try to have a look at the"big five"; elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffaloes and lions. The international draw of these animals matters a lot because the nation’s economy is tied to the protection of its wildlife. If Kenya’s wildlife disappears, so does its second-largest source of income.

Wildlife protection efforts in Kenya meant marking off land exclusively(专门地)for animals. But it also meant that the people who had originally lived in the area were forced to leave their land and into smaller surrounding areas. They are also finding it increasingly hard to keep a traditional Maasai lifestyle. But people are glad that it really makes a difference to wildlife protection.

1. How did Kasaine track lions?
A.By working together with tourists.
B.By running after them all the time.
C.By going to school every day.
D.By studying their paw prints.
2. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Maasai people are born animal lovers.
B.Tourism is a big threat to Kenya’s wildlife.
C.Kenya benefits a lot from its wildlife protection.
D.Small animals are not included in their protection policy.
3. What does the underlined word "it"in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Kenya’s economic development.
B.People’s leaving their original homes.
C.Kenya’s second-largest income source.
D.Kenyan people’s traditional Maasai lifestyle.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Wildlife protection in Kenya

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了对蚂蚁为什么能够准确找到回家之路的科学研究。

8 . Next time you need directions, maybe you can ask an ant. These little creatures are masters of navigation(导航)that some can find their way home whether they're walking forward or backward, according to a study in Current Biology.

Ants often travel long to bring back the food to their nests. But how do they know where they’re going?

Researchers went to Spain to mess with some desert ants. They found an active nest and surrounded it with barriers that forced the foraging(搜寻)ants to follow a particular path back home. Once the ants were familiar with the maze, the researchers would take them up, hand them pieces of a cookie and then put them back in a different location, one that required taking a 90 degree turn to get to the nest.

The research found that the ants carrying a small, easy-to-carry piece would run forward with confidence and were able to head on home. Some ants, however, would drop the cookie and turn around to take a look at the scenery, which allowed the six-legged experts to reset their inner maps, catch their cookies and head in the right direction.

These ants seem to use sky clues, like the position of the sun,to keep them on track. When the researchers used a mirror to make it look like the sun on the other side of the sky, the cornered ants would turn tail for the opposite direction.

So ants integrate(整合)a lot of information to successfully bring home the food.

1. What does the word “maze” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A.A nest that active ants live in.
B.An experiment that is done in the desert.
C.A method that helps to locate food.
D.A place that consists of confusing paths.
2. Why did some ants stop to look at the scenery?
A.To get over the man-made barriers.
B.To enjoy the scenery along the route.
C.To ensure they're in the right direction.
D.To check directions with their maps.
3. According to the passage, what probably helps the ants find their way home?
A.The position of the sun.B.One particular path.
C.A 90 degree turn.D.Pieces of a cookie.
4. Where does this passage probably come from?
A.An adventure novel.B.A geography textbook.
C.A science magazine.D.A tourist brochure.

10 . Several years ago, the mayor of Chicago, Illinois, visited Germany, a leader in green roof design. Later he decided to have vegetation planted on Chicago City Hall. Today, the tops of many other buildings also look like parks. In Canada, the Coast Plaza Hotel in Vancouver has a forest on its roof. New York City has an unusual example farm for hydroponics. The farm is on a boat called the Science Barge. Rainwater and river water are used to grow lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. The farm shows the possibilities for designing rooftop systems.
Green roofs are designed to save energy and capture rainwater. Rooftops covered with plants help keep buildings cool. They can extend the life of a roof. And they can reduce water running off into streets and storming water systems.
Experts say green roofs usually do not get much above 27℃. So temperatures might not be a problem for growing. But rooftop gardeners have to be careful not to put too much weight on the roof. This is true whether plants are grown in soil or water.
Earlier in 2008, researchers in Texas reported that green roofs can reduce a building's air conditioning costs by about onefifth compared to blacktop roofs.   But they also reported that not all green roofs perform equally well. They found that designs differ in their ability to keep buildings cool and to capture rainwater. The researchers put experimental roofs on top of metal insulated (隔热的) boxes, to recreate green roof conditions. The study compared products from six companies to help businesses understand how to improve their designs. Each rooftop had sixteen different kinds of plants native to Texas. The researchers say the presence of native plants likely helped all the green roofs capture water better compared to sedums. Sedums are plants that need little water and often are used on green roofs. The native plants could take in more water and release more of it to the atmosphere.
1. The author gave Paragraph 1 to ________.
A.tell us what is green roof design

A.Sometimes green roofs may break down the house.
B.Not all the green roofs can reduce the building's air conditioning costs equally.
C.Different designs of green roofs have different effects on buildings.
D.Sedums are a kind of plants native to Texas.
4. The experiment is mentioned in the last paragraph ________.
A.to find out how many different plants in Texas
B.to show us how to design green roofs
C.to introduce a kind of roof made of metal
D.to provide proofs to improve the design of green roofs
