2 . Blowing Up Balloons with CO₂
Chemical reactions (化学反应) make for some great experiments. You can make use of the CO₂(carbon dioxide) given off by a baking soda (小苏打) and lemon juice reaction to blow up your balloon!
What you’ll need:
●Balloon ●About 40ml of water ●Soft drink bottle
●Juice from a lemon ●I teaspoon of baking soda
Instructions:
●Before you begin, make sure that you pull the balloon long to make it as easy as possible to blow up.
●Put the 40ml of water into the soft drink bottle.
●Add the baking soda and mix it with water.
●Put the lemon juice in and quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
What’s happening?
If all goes well, then your balloon should inflate! Adding the lemon juice to the baking soda creates a chemical reaction and produces CO₂. The gas rises up and escapes (逸出) through the soft drink bottle. It doesn’t, however, escape the balloon, pushing it outwards and blowing it up.
1. Which of the following do you need for the experiment?A.Two cups. | B.Apple juice. |
C.250 ml water. | D.A teaspoon of baking soda. |
A.Heat the water. | B.Drink some juice. |

A.To describe an experiment. | B.To introduce a game. |
C.To produce soft drinks. | D.To save some chemicals. |
3 . Wu Ming is a young German born after 1995. Wu, a big fan of Chinese culture, has been learning traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since 2016. Now he’s studying for his master degree at Henan University of Chinese Medicine.
As he thought some diseases can’t be treated completely with Western medicine, he decided to dig into TCM. Wu came to Central China’s Hénan Province in 2015, where TCM culture can be enjoyed because Henan Province is the hometown of Zhang Zhongjing, the medical sage (圣人) of ancient China. After one year of learning the Chinese language, he started to learn Chinese medicine.
In the early stages, Wu always tasted some Chinese herbal medicine by himself. He also tried his best to learn and practise Chinese, especially the Henan dialect, as his teachers, schoolmates, and even some patients speak the Henan dialect in their daily conversations.
Studying TCM made a difference to Wu’s life. He used to be crazy about electronic products and stay up late every night, and he was trapped in (陷入) the fast-paced but unhealthy daily life. But now, he lives a balanced and peaceful life, practising good habits like drinking tea, as well as reading ancient books.
Wu also uses what he has learned to help his family. With acupuncture (针灸), various physical disorders of his family have been well treated. Now, he always provides his family members with some advice about staying fit after he checks their skin or tongues online. Over time, his family begin to understand his love for TCM.
In Wu’s opinion, there’s no big difference between China and Western countries. “We are the same. Misunderstanding comes from being out of touch,” said Wu. He plans to run a traditional Chinese clinic (诊所) in Germany after graduation, which could serve as a bridge between the two countries and publicize TCM and its culture.

“Go back, Mom!” repeated my six-year-old daughter, June. We had just left the nearby supermarket. When I was wondering whether I had forgotten something, June added, “Someone needs our help!”
As I looked back from the driver’s seat, I saw a homeless man. It was such a cold day, but he wore few clothes. Touched by June’s kindness, I crazily looked for some cash (现金),quickly realizing I didn’t have any.
“I have some cash, Mom!” June replied. She opened her little wallet and pulled out a five-dollar bill. “Oh, good. I’ll pay you back when we get home,” I said. “No, Mom,” she replied, “I want to help him. I don’t want you to pay me back. I want to give him my money.”
I was so proud of June. I looked at my four-year-old daughter, Scarlett, hoping she’d also give some money to show kindness. Knowing my expectation, she said, “But I only have one dollar. I want to buy ice-cream. I haven’t eaten one for weeks. More importantly, why should we be kind to the homeless? Would they be kind to others? I doubt it!’ Not wanting to force her to give away her money, I gave up. I hoped someday she’d naturally change.
As we drove back, I then kept quiet. When we got near the homeless man, I called out, “Excuse me, sir!” He walked towards our car and answered, “Yes, ma’am?” “Here you go, sir,” June handed him her money through the window. “Thank you,” he said, touched. We shared a smile.
As we decided to drive away, we were drawn to a young woman ten meters away. She was trying hard to push her shopping cart (购物推车) to her car. Unluckily, her cart suddenly fell onto the ground. All of the things she had bought were thrown out and onto the ground. She looked so sad.

6 . Both my parents were educators, and for the past 40 years, I’ve done the same thing. For years, I have watched people teach. And one of the things that are not often noticed is the importance of relationships. Someone says that no important learning can happen without an important relationship. That’s true. Kids may not even learn from people they don’t like.
How do I build relationships with kids and look after kids? I once gave a test — 20 questions. A student missed 18. I put a “+2” on his paper and a big smiling face. I said to him, “You got two right. You didn’t miss them all. And when we review this, won’t you do better?” He said, “Yes, I can do better.” You see, “-18” may be a blow to his pride, but “+2” said, “I am not all bad.”
And for years, I watched my mother take the time at recess (课间休息) to review, go on home visits in the afternoon, and buy small gifts for kids. After she retired (退休), some of her kids came and said to her, “You know, Ms. Walker, you made a difference in my life. You made me feel like I was somebody.” When my mama died, there were so many students at her funeral (葬礼). It brought tears to my eyes, not because she was gone, but because she left a treasure of relationships that could never disappear. Can we have more relationships? Of course, yes. And we teach anyway, no matter what kinds of kids we have.
Teaching and learning should bring joy. How influential our world would be if we had kids who were not afraid to take risks, Who were not afraid to think, and who had a champion (拥护者)! Every child should have a champion, an adult who will never give up on them, and who understands the influence of connection and believes that they can become the best.

10 . Arrangements for the Beijing Tour
Day 1
Any visit to Beijing is incomplete without a hike on the Great Wall. However, it is thousands of miles long and the Beijing section is only a small part of the Great Wall. The first choice is Badaling, but we recommend Juyong Pass, which is less crowded but no less impressive. Depending on your health and preference, you can climb very steep steps or have a walk on the relatively flat areas. There are many locations for great photo opportunities.
Day 2
Start at the Temple of Heaven. where emperors used to hold ceremonies to pray. Stop at the Echo Wall and discover the wonder of voices bouncing (弹跳) back and forth. Pass through the guard-protected Golden Water Bridge, and go to visit the Palace Museum.
Day 3
You can pay a visit to Capital Museum where the exhibits have more surprises. Take a walk along Wangfujing Street, a modern shopping street. The walking is much less intensive and the budgeted time much more flexible. If you are crazy about Peking Opera, National Centre for the Performing Arts is an ideal place to go.
Day 4
The Summer Palace in a northwestern suburb of the city is a beautiful place. A short taxi ride north will take you to Qianmen Street. This retail centre was renovated (翻新) for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Here are some of the oldest businesses of the city, including the famous Peking Duck.
