Sean was a single father of three kids who had just lost their mother to cancer. Shortly afterwards, he had to sell his house to pay the medical bills. Worse still, he had to quit his job as a regional manager due to too many absences he acquired in taking care of his wife while she was sick. Their lives sank into extreme poverty. He had to do part-time work to pay off his debts. He never imagined what his life would become. Everything felt hopeless. Anyway, he continued with his life, earning barely enough money to feed his kids.

Today was a bit different. He went to the nearest gas station after work.He had an extra $2 with which he could buy himself a cheap hot dog. It was a little treat he would give himself. As he walked toward the gas station, he saw a man panicking, saying something to a woman in the car. Not knowing why they were so worried,he continued walking until the man called out to him.

“Sir, I’m so sorry to ask, but my wife is in labor(临产), and we’re out of gas. I left my wallet and phone at home as we were rushing out of the house. Is there any way you can help me?” the man said. His desperate eyes pulled at Sean’s heartstrings.

“Well, sir. I only have 2 dollars, but you can have it!” Sean said, reaching into his pocket and producing the 2 dollars. “Thank you! That works. I have a few coins in the car, but I can get a gallon and reach the hospital with that.” The man took the bills gratefully.

“I’m Matthew. Please give me your contact information so I can pay you back.” “No need. I only hope you and your wife get to the hospital safely,” Sean smiled. But Matthew insisted. Finally, Sean gave him his number.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了研究表明阅读可以帮助孩子培养同理心,这对于儿童发展有很多好处。

6 . It’s known that reading is good for a child’s vocabulary and literacy skills, teaching them math or science concepts and helping them learn history. Apart from those, reading has another benefit. Have you read a story and felt tears well up because of a character’s suffering? If so, that is because you have empathy (共鸣) for the character — and empathy can be learned through various fictions. “It’s a magic eye that sees into other people’s hearts,” explains author Cressida Cowell.

Research shows that human brains react differently to stories and facts. “Many more areas of your brain light up when you’re enjoying a story,” explains Miranda McKearney from EmpathyLab, an organization that builds empathy through reading. “Your brain thinks you are in the story… This means you experience the characters’ thoughts as if they are real.”

Empathy helps you to read people’s emotions and work out the best way to respond. This skill, called emotional intelligence, can make it easier to communicate and connect with people. Research has shown that building empathy can lead to greater kindness and tolerance. One study found that children who read the Harry Potter novels — which tell stories about humans fighting against the evil — were less likely to behave unfairly towards powerless groups including refugees (难民).

This theory has been put into practice by St Michael’s Primary School. After reading The Boy at the Back of the Class — a story about a boy who is a refugee escaping from the war — students in that school were inspired to do a 10-mile walk for the non-profit organization Refugee Action. Their empathy also spurred them to raise £1,000 for people who were forced to leave their homes because of war.

Reading encourages children to empathise with others, which could potentially lead to several beneficial learning outcomes, new research suggests. For society to develop, creative, communicative and empathetic individuals really matter.

1. Why do readers cry about a character’s experience?
A.They have magic eyes.B.They want to show empathy.
C.They understand his feelingsD.They have the same experience.
2. What does the author show by referring to the Harry Potter novels?
A.The process of building empathy.
B.The benefits of developing empathy.
C.The definition of emotional intelligence.
D.The results of the school’s activity.
3. What does the underlined word “spurred” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Reminded.B.Permitted.C.Persuaded.D.Encouraged.
4. What might the author advise children to do?
A.Read to learn empathy.
B.Become empathetic to others.
C.Put themselves in others’ shoes.
D.Read as many books as possible.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项关于月球上的泥土是否可以用来种植粮食的研究,结果发现植物在月球土壤中不能正常生长。

7 . For the first time, scientists have grown plants in the moon soil collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts. The scientists had no idea if anything would grow in the moon dirt. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow food by the next generation of moon explorers. The results surprised them. Plants actually can grow in lunar (月球的) soil.

The researchers planted thale cress (芥蓝), a small flowering plant, in moon soil returned from the Apollo missions. The good news was that all of the seeds grew. The bad news was that after the first week the lunar soil stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of the moon plants ended up stunted—meaning small or not fully developed.

The longer the soil was exposed to radiation and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do. The soil collected by the Apollo 11 mission was the least helpful for growth. It was exposed a couple billion years longer to the elements.

Scientists said, “This is a big step forward to know that we can grow plants. The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.”

Moon dirt is full of glass particles from micrometeorite (微小陨石) impacts. One solution might be to use younger geologic spots on the moon, like lava flows, for digging up soil. The environment also could be changed by adding special nutrient (营养物) mixtures or artificial lighting.

Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo erews that landed on the moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on Earth.

Early last year NASA finally gave out 12 grams of soil to the University of Florida researchers for the planting experiment. NASA said the timing for such an experiment was finally right with the space agency looking to put astronauts back on the moon in a few years.

1. What is the result of the planting experiment with lunar soil?
A.The plants couldn’t grow normally.B.It was difficult for the seeds to grow.
C.They were struck by some diseases.D.The soil was too stressed for the plants to grow.
2. What is the final purpose of this experiment?
A.To create a new crop.B.To improve lunar soil.
C.To plant on the moon.D.To find the right amount of light.
3. Why did the scientists use volcanic ash for testing?
A.Lunar soil cannot be brought back by humans.B.Lunar soil was difficult to obtain for testing.
C.Lunar soil is not suitable for planting.D.Lunar soil is the same as volcanic ash.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Future Astronauts Will Grow Food on the Moon
B.It’s Time to Study Growing Crops on the Moon
C.Lunar Soil Consists of Tiny Glass Particles
D.Scientists Grow Plants in Dirt from the Moon

8 . You might think of martial arts movies when you see people performing graceful moves down the river, all standing on a bamboo strip, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage: bamboo drifting (漂流).

Over 2,000 years ago, the high-quality wood, nanmu, in Guizhou was in great demand by the royal court more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. With no better transportation, people had to stand on one log (原木) to drift down the river. Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born. In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became bamboo drifting because of bamboo’s lower price. Due to the skills it takes for one to master this act, bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list last year.

Yang Liu, a 24-year-old inheritor of bamboo drifting, learned it at 7. “Usually, the bamboo under your feet is about 9 meters long, and the bamboo in your hands is about 5 meters. If the length or diameter (直径) of the bamboo is not long enough, it will not float. Keeping our feet firmly positioned on the narrow bamboo pole is the key, so we should fight against the current by constantly changing the angle. I lost my balance and fell in the water many times while practicing. Once I fell, I gave it another try until I knew how to handle the most difficult part, ” she said.

The love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going. In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round, in winter cold and summer heat. A hanfu culture has been on the rise, Yang started wearing hanfu while performing, creating a more beautiful feel. In 2020, Yang began to post her videos on social media. “I’m extremely proud to get responses from viewers that bamboo drifting makes the line between what is possible and impossible unclear. It’s my mission to keep it alive and known to more people,” Yang Liu told China Daily.

1. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs?

4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Transporting Bamboo down the River
B.Intangible Cultural Heritage in Guizhou
C.Balancing with Grace

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。最新研究表明,在土壤中加入乙醇(酒精)可以帮助植物在干旱时期存活更长时间。
10 . A new study released in the journal Plant and Cell Physiology suggests that ethanol —or alcohol —can help plants survive in times of drought, even for as long as two weeks without water.

To come up with their finding, the researchers grew wheat and rice plants, regularly watering them, and then added ethanol to the soil in one group of plants over three days. They then kept both groups deprived of(中断) water for two weeks and found that drunk plants grew better than untreated ones. Around 75% of the drunk wheat and rice plants survived after rewatering, while less than 5% of the untreated plants did.

The study also looked at how ethanol protected a plant. Using arabidopsis, a small plant commonly used in experiments, the researchers discovered that when ethanol-treated specimens (样品) were deprived of water, tiny openings on the leaves’ surface closed up to preserve water and heat.

The team studied arabidopsis’ gene (基因) expression and found that the ethanol-treated plants started behaving if they were experiencing drought, even before they were actually deprived of water. This gene expression gave the plants an advantage in preparing for a drought.

The researchers said, “The finding is not just useful for the world’s gardens, but also for farms growing vital crops like rice and wheat. Drought-resistant crops could help achieve sustainable food security, which is an issue affecting many parts of the world right now.” They added that ethanol was a useful and simple way to increase food production all over the world in times of drought. “The application of ethanol to plants would be a potent agricultural method to enhance drought resistance in various plants,” said Motoaki Seki, the study’s lead author. But, he warned that the ethanol needed to be used reasonably as higher concentration of ethanol prevented plants growing. Seki added, “We will soon begin testing ethanol on plants in real fields.”

1. What did the researchers find in their study?
A.Plants produce ethanol in times of drought.B.Drunk plants could live longer without water.
C.There is no need to water house plants every day.D.It requires more water to grow wheat in the field.
2. What do the researchers expect of the finding?
A.It will cut the cost of food production.B.It will bring about the change of diet.
C.It will help maintain global food security.D.It will generate increases in food price.
3. What does the underlined word “potent” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Difficult.B.Effective.C.Similar.D.Primary.
4. What does Seki want to stress about ethanol in the text?
A.It would fit all kinds of plants.B.It has been applied to real fields.
C.It should be used in proper amount.D.It enables wheat plants to grow fast.
