文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章就如何举组织举办一个成功的音乐节提出了几点建议。

5 . How to Organize a Music Festival

You love music and you always have it. You want to carry out a music festival designed to attract music fans of all ages. Follow the steps and you'll organize a successful one.

▲Start by making a list of the local bands and artists that you like. You've taken this job because you love music, so use your taste to work for you. If you like these musicians, many of the local residents will also like them.      1     You need to have many kinds of music for all age groups.

▲Find a great location that has much open space for outdoor festivals. You need to build a stage so the musicians can be seen from a distance.      2     Not all towns need such license but it is a good idea to check before you start building. For an indoor location, you need to find a theater whose owner is willing to give you enough space.     3

▲Hire sound and engineering people to give the musicians all the help they need.      4     You can’t expect the musicians to handle these problems because they are playing. Your sound and engineering experts will allow your stars to keep the music playing.

5     If you are planning your festival for families, the last thing you want is a beer-swilling crowd starting a huge brawl (斗殴). Security people need to be present to make sure that nobody gets the idea that they want to start any kind of ruckus (骚乱).

A.You need to find security people.
B.Bigger sports stadiums will be perfect as well.
C.We can find enough songs to get a lot of money.
D.People should have practiced many different songs.
E.But remember, you are trying to attract fans of all ages.
F.The last thing you want is that a musician is on stage but the speakers don’t work.
G.You can find a location by going to the local government and asking for permission.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.

Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs (嫩枝), “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving (感到悲伤), I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. Gradually, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pi le of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch, though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jack is in the fourth grade and he joined the noisy children of his class as usual. “Children! Silence!” Ms. Benette suddenly entered the class. She announced next week would be maths week. “I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group,” she instructed. “The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be showed at the maths week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added.

Jack, who is extremely good at maths, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Cathy, an average. Cathy asked Jack if they could work on the maths project together. Jack replied in a prideful tone, “Ha-ha you want to join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Jack wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Ms. Benette.

After deep consideration, Jack decided to work on a maths magic quiz on the circuit board (电路板). The next day in school, Ms. Benette arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for maths exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Jack. In the following days, Jack gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs(灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board(胶合板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed(发光). Jack completed the project and was happy with the result.

The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Jack again checked the project to see if it was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason, Jack was anxious. However, he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn’t change the topic at the last minute. Then came the next day, and everybody was fascinated in the exhibition.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了第一次独自旅行冒险时要记住的事情。

8 . Things To Remember On Your First Solo Travel Adventure

If you’ve ever thought about just taking a trip yourself instead of waiting for someone to join you, you’re not alone.     1     However, do you count yourself among the many who have tried it? If you’re planning your own solo trip, here are four important things to keep in mind.

2     Since you’re traveling solo, how you choose to explore it is entirely up to you. This is your chance to do whatever you want whenever you want because this time, you’re running the show.

Don’t be afraid to talk to random people. Though there is someone who poses a threat, it’s important to remember that not everyone is out to get you.     3    That’s because you’re a novelty, a person from another country who is visiting theirs. Therefore, instead of putting on your headphones or instantly seeing them as weirdos, use this spontaneous chat as a chance to meet the locals or get recommendations for things to do during your trip.

It’s okay to have bad days.     4     It happens and it’s completely okay to take some time to process whatever it is you’re feeling. Take yourself to a movie or spend the day dong something relaxing like writing in your journal or reading on the beach.

It’s okay to start small.     5     Start by doing a staycation in another part of town, spending a few days in a new locale a bus or train ride away. Just do whatever you’re comfortable with and see how it all feels for you.

A.You are the boss of your own adventure.
B.You need to make an unusual travel choice.
C.It’s no secret that solo travel is on the rise.
D.Sometimes things can go incredibly wrong.
E.People like you simply don’t know how to start.
F.Most of the time people are just curious and try to be friendly.
G.Remember, your first solo trip doesn’t have to be to a whole other continent.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A freezing downpour washed the street in front of the small-town bar. I sat gazing into the watery darkness, alone as usual. I had been in that old bar for half an hour, quietly thinking, when my thoughtful eyes finally focused on a medium-sized lump in a puddle (水洼) a hundred feet away. For another ten minutes, I looked out through the window trying to decide if the lump was an animal or just something.

The night before, a dog named Shep had come into the bar begging for potato chips. He was starving and just the size of the lump in the puddle. Why should a dog lie in a cold puddle in the freezing rain? I asked myself. The answer was simple: Either it wasn’t a dog, or it was, and he was too weak to get up.

The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers, I didn’t want to go out in the storm. Hey, it wasn’t my dog. It was just a stray on a cold rainy night, a lonely drifter(流浪者). So was I, I thought, as I gulped (大口吞咽) down what was left of my drink and headed out the door.

He was lying in the three inches of water. When I touched him, he didn’t move. I thought he was dead. I put my hands around his chest and raised him to his feet. He stood unsteadily, and his head hung like a weight at the end of his neck. His floppy ears were just hairless pieces of flesh dotted with open sores (伤口).

“Come on, Shep,” I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the cold cement floor and closed his eyes. A block away I could see the lights of a late-night convenience store. It was still open. I bought three cans of dog food and fed him. He couldn’t swallow but looked at me. He was dying!
