Humans have lived in cities for around 5,000 years. These cities were unlike modern cities, but still organized places meant for many people to live together peacefully. So, what was life like in the earliest cities created by humankind? Using modern technology, scientific explorers have discovered some answers.
The Indus Valley civilization existed from about 3300 — 1700 BCE, roughly 5,320 to 3,720years ago. Also known as the Harappan civilization, the Indus Valley civilization was one of the world’s earliest urban civilizations. At the same time, the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China were also prosperous. The Harappan civilization was located in South Asia, in what is now Pakistan and northwest India.
Although the Harappans had a written language, scholars today cannot decipher the text. As a result, most of what is known about Harappans comes from the ruins of their two largest cities: Harappa and Mohenjo-daro. Both cities cover less than 2.6 square kilometers, or one square mile. This is much smaller than modern cities. For example, in the United States, Central Park in New York City alone has an area of 1.3 square miles. The cities had an estimated population of around40,000 each.
The cities were located about 644 kilometers, or 400 miles, from one another and were similar in layout. Scholars believe the Harappans used the position of the rising sun and moon to determine their cities’ geography. One significant feature of Harappan cities was their highly developed systems for supplying water and removing waste. In Mohenjo-daro, about 700 wells supplied water to the city’s buildings.
Explorers continue to investigate the Harappan civilization. Since 1986, they have made many important discoveries. Artifacts (手工艺品) are displayed at the National Museum in New Delhi, India, and in museums throughout the world.

3 . The Free Books Campaign was set up in July 2020 by Sofia Akel, a race equity (种族平等) researcher, when she decided to launch a fundraiser to get as many books as possible by authors of colour to people that can’t afford them across the UK and Ireland.
So far, this campaign has progressed smoothly and influenced profoundly. Over 1, 700 books have been sent to people who can’t afford them, and it has even caught the attention of the footballer.
Marcus Rashford who donated 400 copies of his children’s book You Are a Champion.
Some of the people who benefit from the campaign include children from working class backgrounds who have not been exposed to literature from Black or Brown authors at school or at home. “I’ve had emails from parents who weren’t aware of just how many amazing authors of colour there are, and who have said how much their child lit up seeing a book that reflected them,” Sofia says.
Explaining the need for the campaign, Sofia says: “Sadly, reading has become a luxury in today’s world. If you’re working two jobs just to put food on the table, having that time to sit down and read can be difficult. So, there is an element of privilege when it comes to even just finding the time to read. On top of that, the typical adult hardback book might cost you upwards off 15, which could put food on the table for a week if you were counting every penny.”
This is where the campaign hopes to step in. It operates on a trust basis, which means the campaign doesn’t exist to police people’s financial circumstances. “No one has to prove that they’ve not got money — even if some people volunteer personal information, we never ask for it. Everyone deserves to read books that they love.” Sofia adds.

C.One should offer personal information to get a book. |
D.The campaign can monitor people’s finances if necessary. |
4 . “Hey, lady! You can move your ugly car up now!” The silver-haired driver behind me in a fancy truck rudely yelled at me. Without much thought, I yelled back at the man, “What? Are you in a rush or something? ”
I was waiting in line at the drive-through to order our breakfast on a Sunday morning. There were only 12 inches or so between me and the car in front of me. There were also three additional cars in front of that one. We were getting nowhere fast. What was he hoping to gain by yelling at me?
I wanted to let my own anger go after this ridiculous exchange. But the more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I was angry that he yelled at a mother in front of two kids. My daughter and my son were both confused and saddened by what they had just witnessed. We were on our way to a soccer tournament, and we had a bonus day free from school and work. Probably, there was nothing in the world to be upset about. Then this man let his anger out.
I told my kids I was so mad that I had to roll my window up so that I wouldn’t keep yelling at this guy. Then, I stopped and looked back. I had moved up the 12 or so inches at his “suggestion”, while he hadn’t moved an inch. Suddenly, I felt sympathy for him. He must have been suffering in some way. As my kids and I slowly made our way to the pick-up window to pay for our order, I had an idea.
“I heard how rude that man was to you, and I wanted to apologize to you for having to put up with that. He isn’t worth paying for,” the cashier said to me. “My kids support me in doing that,” I answered the cashier, adding that hate cannot drive out hate.

How I became a good table tennis player is still freshly in my mind. The first day I went to high school, I find some of my classmates playing table tennis. Amazing at how skillful they were, I made up my mind to master the skills. Luckily, I had a few opportunity to watch my classmates’games and practise with them. However, I found difficult to challenge some good players in my class. Despite it, I kept practised until I became one of the best. As a result, I were even selected to represent our school in some matches. I take great pride of this experience. It not only makes me to realize that I can achieve my potential through hard work, but lets me understand that the proverb “Practice makes perfect” means.

10 . I turned 65 this February, a big milestone. The last 12 months has indeed been a time of profound thinking for me, but not for the reasons you may think.
Recently our culture has started to acknowledge that a perfect woman image is totally unrealistic. I suppose there are a small minority of women born with incredible genes. But for most of us, short of starving ourselves, having plastic surgery, or airbrushing our photos, perfection is an unattainable goal.
I applaud many celebrity women who have come forward recently and said, “Hey, you see that picture of me on the magazine cover. This is what I really looked like before specialized hair and makeup and the magic of Photoshop.” I am so happy that our daughters and granddaughters are being raised with a much more realistic concept of what beauty is.
Being a woman of a certain age, that old message of feminine (女性的) perfection took hold long ago and has been hard to shake. My legs, waist and stomach are bigger than the charts say they should be. I would avoid looking for too long in the mirror. A swimsuit always required a cover-up to be worn over it. I had been very successfully taught to be ashamed of my imperfect body.
However, after a pretty serious health issue last year, I started to have a different feeling about my body. This body has given me two incredible children and endured too many surgeries. My belly, back, feet and knees are marked with countless scars but finally I see what they truly are — my battle scars. My extra pounds are the result of countless dinners I have made and enjoyed with those I love. My scars remind me of all the talented and kind doctors and nurses who have looked after me.
My body has allowed me a wonderful life thus far. I thought my body was not ideal, but now I thank it for being a source of strength, endurance and pleasure. At 65, I finally realize it is truly beautiful.
