文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Terrie Mitchell与她心爱的猫在时隔11年后,再次团聚的故事。

1 . Terrie Mitchell, 34, from Sheffield, received an unexpected present when she was finally reunited with her beloved cat — 11 years after she first went missing. Chloe, who only has one eye, was discovered living in an overturned wheelie bin just a few streets away from where she was last seen.

Chloe was first brought into her family home as a kitten, when Ms. Mitchell was aged 21 and still living at home with her mum, Jean. When she moved out with her partner, she let the longhaired black cat stay in the house she was used to. But when Ms. Mitchell’s mother died unexpectedly at the age of 60, Chloe disappeared and could not be found anywhere.

Despite searching for her, she all but gave up hope of ever seeing her cat again until she spotted a Facebook post featuring the longhaired cat. Postwoman Andrea Hurst had been delivering a parcel to an elderly lady, when she spotted the cat living in the wheelie bin. On her next round, she asked about the cat and was told she had been staying there for more than six years as the woman had been feeding her. The kindly woman asked a local cat shelter to collect Chloe, before using the social media site to locate the original owners. She wrote, “This is probably a long shot, but does anyone recognize this beautiful cat?”

Ms. Mitchell noticed the post by chance and commented, “Omg, this is my cat!!!!! I can’t stop shaking!!!!! Her name is Chloe!!! Please whoever knows contact me...”

The vet, who confirmed Chloe was more than 10 years old, told her owner it was nothing short of a miracle. Today Chloe is settling in well at her new home and even responds to her original name. Her delighted owner added, “Now I feel guilty that I didn’t search for her better, because she was obviously around. It could give hope to people who haven’t seen their pets for years.”

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。介绍了美国四个冬季最好的国家公园。

5 . The Best National Parks to Visit in Winter

While most parks tend to draw families in the summer and fall, there are also ideal spots for adventurous winter trips.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

The country’s oldest and best-known national park takes on an almost otherworldly atmosphere in winter: the air filled with rolling steam, the strong colors of hot springs, the surrounding white landscapes, let alone the impressive wildlife during this time, like bison, wolves, and playful red foxes. Just book a guided hiking tour to get a ranger’s perspective on the park and local people.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

With its giant red rocks and unique trees, you’ll feel like stepping onto a foreign planet as you spend hours hiking the Panorama Loop or Maze Loop. The park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, featuring virtually zero light pollution and the country’s best views of a starry sky.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

A significantly lower number of visitors in winter means you can take in unblocked views of the South Rim, and get to see the rare beauty of the Grand Canyon dusted with snow. For those adventurous and daring, it is recommended to hike the Bright Angel Trail and take the chance to see the canyon’s wintertime wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and bald eagles.

Virgin Islands National Park, St. John

Surprise! Not all wintertime national park trips need to involve snow. Virgin Islands National Park is most famous for its white-sand beaches. You can also hike inland to visit old sugar plantations, or venture out to the water to swim along with sea turtles and manta rays. You will definitely enjoy a different winter here.

1. Which park will one choose if he/she is interested in stars?
A.Yellowstone National Park.B.Joshua Tree National Park.

8 . I remember being so frustrated (沮丧的)when it came to school and doing my homework when I was in primary school. I would sit there and cry for hours because nothing made sense to me like it should have. It felt like no matter what I did, nothing came easy to me.

Finally, my teachers saw that there was something wrong. They saw my frustration and my inability to process what they were saying very clearly. They suggested giving me a test, and I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD). In simple terms, I just couldn’t focus.

In the sixth grade I was put on medication (药物治疗) to combat the disorder, which completely transformed my life. I was also put into classes that suited my learning disabilities and made it easier for me to concentrate on learning for the first time. I was so happy to actually learn, and it was the most amazing feeling to learn something and actually understand it for the first time in my entire life.

My parents were in absolute shock of how much I had accomplished in just the first year of being treated. Seventh grade, I will never forget, because it was the first year that I had received straight As, had gotten High Honor Roll and had been able to understand what I was learning. Yeah, it was only seventh grade but, for me, it was one of my biggest accomplishments.

Later, I did better and better, and eventually I outgrew my Individualized Education Program(IEP) in the tenth grade. And by the eleventh I was mainstreamed into all normal classes, and held my weight the entire time. I was so determined to beat my own disabilities and I did everything I could not to let that be something that held me back. I worked hard, studied hard, and achieved what many aren't able to do.

If you’re like me, please believe that you can achieve what I’ve achieved, too. You just need some professional help.

9 . When A33, a theater in Beijing, hosted a new stand-up comedy show(脱口秀), to the surprise of the organizers, nearly 250 people turned up and laughed together. Six years ago, that would have been unbelievable. Indeed, there were even cases of shows having more performers than viewers.

Wan Da, one of the performers, said, “Many people are worried about the future of stand-up comedy, a genre (类型) that is very popular in the U.S. after its introduction in China. Can it adapt itself here? But as the results show, there is no need to worry. We have survived and carried on some of the best American traditions.”

Programs such as Rock& Roast, a comedy talk show competition, which are thought to help people reduce their pressure, drive audiences to offline performances for a real laugh. “Generally, our audiences are in the 20-35 age group, but recently some older people are reported to go to the theatre,” said Song Qiyu, a performer and founder of Beijing Comedy Center.

Compared to traditional Chinese comedy performances, the stand-up comedy has a lower bar as it doesn't require years of professional training. This allows everyone to take part. Work experience and personal observations of life are the sources of their inspiration. Different lives and jobs make the performances varied, giving them unique individual colors.

Joe Wong, a humorist from Jilin province, whose performance in Washington, D.C. in 2010 attracted much attention across China's social media, is happy to see the development of the industry in China. However, he has a warning, too: There is huge space for the genre in China, but we should be careful of growing too fast as the market still needs good works.

In China, many fresh college graduates join. Through their efforts, the industry will improve its standards and popularity as well as influence.

1. What can we learn about the stand-up comedy from Paragraph 2?
A.It develops well in China.B.It is created by Americans.
C.It faces an uncertain future.D.It is very popular in Beijing.
2. Why can everyone join the stand-up comedy industry?
A.They have a gift for talking.B.It needs plenty of performers.
C.It needs no special backgrounds.D.Most people have a sense of humor.
3. What is Joe Wong's suggestion for the stand-up comedy?
A.Learning from America.B.Offering quality content.
C.Keeping creating works.D.Employing fresh graduates.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The stand-up comedy: a rising industryB.A33: a quickly growing comedy theatre
C.Why does the stand-up comedy get popular?D.How does the stand-up comedy survive in China?
