1 . My family just got back from a wonderful vacation. It was 10 days of good food, great sun and beautiful beaches. One day nearly ruined our trip, though. I had caught a bad cold, and I was thinking about staying at home. But my wife had her heart set on the beach, and because we have three small children, I came along to help out.
We arrived, and my wife was in heaven. I wasn't as enthusiastic. The sand wasn't nearly as soft as I like. And the surf was much rougher, which certainly didn't please my kids.
As I kept comparing this beach to other ones, my mood deteriorated. I was about to get into another big argument with my wife when I remembered three little words: "Disagree and commit". It's a principle that encourages healthy discussion and disagreement during the decision-making process, but that requires full support for a decision once made.
In the case of our vacation, I had agreed to let my wife pick the beach for the day. Because of my cold, I would have found something wrong with just about any beach. And complaining would have just made everyone else unhappy, too. So, I did the opposite. I looked for all the great things about the beach and voiced them out loud. And guess what? I survived those hours on the beach.
In all our relationships, we're looking for support. Of course, good friends should be able to have healthy disagreements. But when it comes to making decisions, there are times when all the discussion in the world won't change another person's mind. When that happens, ask yourself: Can I disagree and commit? If you can, you'll show your partner you're willing to go all in and they'll do the same for you.
I know it's saved my most precious relationships countless times over the years. And it's a major reason why after 11 years of marriage, three kids, and even the stress of a family vacation, the relationship between my wife and me is stronger than ever.

Lily was cleaning windows, and it was what she must do for her family's new Chinese restaurant. Everything had to be absolutely perfect: unique decorations, skillful employees, and delicious traditional food. Then customers would love the place, making the business a success.
Lily's family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was opened yesterday. She was new in the neighbor and had few friends. The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. She was eager for a friendship, though.
Lily shifted her vision to look outside the restaurant as a girl about her age, with abundant red hair, walked up the street. The girl paused to study the sign announcing their opening and then looked directly at Lily with a friendly smile. Lily smiled back shyly and lifted a hand, accidentally waving with the cleaning cloth. The girl smiled at her amusement and waved back happily.
Lily hesitated, not accustomed to starting friendship, but she felt courageous, so she opened the door. "Hello," she said, adding the first thing that entered her head, “do you like Chinese food?”
“I don't know, but I like to try new things," the girl remarked, and then she introduced herself as Gabriela.
Lily could not think of additional conversation until she had a sudden idea.

4 . Will human beings find intelligent alien (外星的) life anytime soon? Probably not, according to theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking.
Hawking made the prediction during the Breakthrough Starshot announcement in New York City on April 12. At the news conference, Hawking, along with Russian billionaire sponsor Yuri Milner and a group of scientists, detailed a new project that aims to send a large number of tiny, wafer-size (薄饼大小的) spaceships into space to the neighboring star system Alpha Centauri (半人马座阿尔法星).
If these tiny spaceships travel at 20 percent of the speed of light, they'll be able to reach Alpha Centauri in just 20 years, Milner said. Once there, the spacecraft will be able to do a 1-hour flyby of Alpha Centauri and collect data that's impossible to gather from Earth, such as taking close-up photos of the star system, studying space dust molecules (分子) and measuring magnetic fields (磁场), said Avi Loeb, chairman of the Breakthrough Starshot Advisory Committee and a professor of science at Harvard University.
In addition to learning about space technology, the audience wanted to hear about aliens--specifically, when scientists might find them.
Hawking took questions from reporters in advance so that he would have time to prepare his answers.
Hawking has famously predicted that intelligent aliens might threaten humankind. Indeed, when asked about what Earthlings should do if we came across intelligent alien life, he said, “We should hope that they don' t find us.”
Other researchers at the conference offered a more optimistic view of alien life.

In the past, people only printed books and magazine to read. However, in recent years, the way to reading has been changed greatly. Some paper books have replaced by e-books. More and more people prefer to read e-books in the computer.
In my opinion, reading e-books can bring great benefits. First of all, comparing with paper books, e-books are many more convenient to read. We can read e-books whenever we are freely and wherever we are. It is especially good for those that are always on the go. Second, reading e-books is the good way to protect the environment because we need not to cut down trees to produce paper any more.

10 . The future of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which will open on Tuesday, has been doubted by some experts due to their low expectations as to its logistic(后勤的) functions. But instead, the bridge will play an important role in promoting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
According to research made by the One Country Two Systems Research Institute, the grand bridge connecting Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai will have limited effects on freightage(货运) but it will have a meaningful influence on passenger traffic.
Under the economic environment of the Bay Area, particularly the western part, the bridge's transport function will focus on passenger traffic.
The bridge will give a big improvement to cross-boundary passenger traffic as using it will not only be less time-consuming than the currently used circuitous(迂回的) land routes, it will also be more economical than travel by sea. Demand for cross-boundary passenger transport is expected to increase greatly.
And prospects(前景) for the bridge's traffic volumes have received a improvement from two policies. The first is that the bridge charge for vehicles will be driver-friendly — between 60 yuan ($8.66) and 300 yuan per trip.
The second policy is connected with private car drivers. Hong Kong drivers without a mainland license can apply for a permit online and drive around Guangdong for a short period after entering the province through designated(指定的) ports.
Along with other favorable policies, which have already been carried out, the operation of the bridge is likely to strength regional unity.
Greater cooperation between Hong Kong and the western Pearl River Delta is a major value of the bridge.
