文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者的第一份工作经历及其教训。

1 . I’m 23 now, and I’ve had about eight different jobs. From each one I’ve learned something valuable.

The first job was as a receptionist (接待员) at a company that sold knives, and I got into the job so completely that I no longer had a life outside work. I was so desperate (不顾一切的) not to lose the job that I tried my best to be the best employee there ever was. I would come in at 6 am. Sometimes I wouldn’t leave until 11 at night.

Not only was I afraid of getting fired, but also I was avoiding being at home. I was living in an apartment with people I hated, so I spent all my time at work. And sometimes my boss asked me to lie to customers. I hated to do so. And soon my boss told me all his problems. I listened and offered whatever advice I could. It made me feel needed and useful.

I didn’t like the sleepless nights. I worried not only about my own problems but also about my boss’s as well. Even when my work started to suffer because of the stress, I couldn’t tell my boss that I needed a break.

Well, as you can imagine, I was working too much. It didn’t take long for me to pass out (昏倒) one night. And I had to stay in hospital and I was fired because my boss said I couldn’t handle the job’s pressure.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述Jochnowitz在社交媒体上发布被丢弃的意大利面图片,从而引发了人们的兴趣和质疑。

2 . “Workers in Old Bridge Township found 15 wheel-barrow loads of ‘illegal dumped pasta (意大利面食)’ along a river in a residential neighborhood,” Old Bridge Township’ s Business Administrator Himanshu Shah said.

The pasta came in a variety of shapes, from spaghetti to macaroni, sitting along a wooded bank of Iresick Brook. Photos from the scene set off a range of reactions — who would do such a thing and why?

But for residents like Nina Jochnowitz, an environmental activist, the noodles’ unexplained appearance was the last straw. For her, it’s not who dumped the pasta, but why. Jochnowitz said, “The story really is about the fact that in Old Bridge Township, we do not have garbage pickup. It has been a point of argument for the entire time I’ve lived in this town — 23 years.”

When Jochnowitz posted images of the dumped pasta on social media, it set off interest and questions. She estimated the pasta to weigh 300 pounds or 400 pounds.

“My initial reaction is exactly what yours was,” Jochnowitz told the news agency. “It was funny, humorous and mortifying. It’s funny because it’s pasta and not garbage; it’s humorous because you could make a lot of jokes... And then I’m horrified because of course it is the potential pollution of the nearby streamand river.”

“Two workers from the city’s Department of Public Works were able to scavenge the area in less than an hour,” Shah said.

Jochnowitz thanked the department for the rapid response to what was called “Mission Impastable”, saying that when the workers removed the pasta, they also cleaned out all the garbage in the area.

“Some people take to throwing their trash in remote parts of the town,” Jochnowitz said. “My neighborhood happens to be a pretty remote neighborhood, so it’s a common place for dumping.” She also urged the township’s leaders to start offering public garbage services.

1. How did people react to the photos?
A.They were satisfied and happy.
B.They were interested and puzzled.
C.They were relaxed and surprised.
D.They were disappointed and anxious.
2. Why did Jochnowitz feel horrified?
A.So much food had been wasted.
B.The environment would be polluted.
C.The pasta blocked the way to her house.
D.The photos would bring about trouble for her.
3. What does the underlined word “scavenge” in the sixth paragraph mean?
A.Clear up.B.Take over.
C.Give up.D.Get away from.
4. What did Jochnowitz hope for the region?
A.Public garbage services.
B.Cleaner surroundings.
C.More positive reactions.
D.Some good residents

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了几种改善抑郁症情绪的方法。

3 . If you feel depressed (消沉的), it’s best to do something about it — depression doesn’t just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor, here are four things you can do to feel better.

Exercise.

Take a 15- to-30- minute walk every day or dance if you prefer.     1     But make yourself do it anyway. Once you get in the exercise habit it won’t take long to notice a difference in your mood.

Provide yourself with good nutrition.

Depression can affect appetite (食欲). Some people may not feel like eating at all while others might overeat.    2     So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals.

Find out troubles.

3     When you know what’s got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend, for talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. If there’s no one to tell, pouring your heart out to a journal works just as well.

    4

Depression affects a person’s thoughts, making everything seem negative and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Considering your strengths or gifts may help.

Most of all, don’t forget to be patient with yourself.     5

A.Depression takes time to heal.
B.Take action to solve problems.
C.Look on the bright side.
D.Proper nutrition can affect a person’s mood and energy.
E.Try to make out the situations that have led to your depression.
F.People who are depressed may not feel much like being active.
G.With depression a person’s creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要说明了动画片《猫和老鼠》告诉了我们四条人生经验。

5 . In the cartoon Tom and Jerry, Tom tries his best to kill Jerry, and Jerry keeps finding ways to escape. Both Tom and Jerry have their own challenges but they were born to never give up. Here are four life lessons we can learn from these two cartoon characters.

We fight with our nearest and dearest ones because we feel it is our right. Well, it doesn’t really matter how many times we fight; what matters is: Do we provide them with a sense of security (安全感) in the face of danger? Do we offer our shoulders when they are in need of us or stand by them when they feel upset? Do we share our happiness in life?

If you are witty, then your size does not matter at all. A weak one might get frightened for a moment, but he can win over the strongest with his wisdom. Jerry just makes the best use of his brain and wins. If you ever feel lost, disappointed or weak, return to yourself and try to discover your strength. “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”

At times, your best friend might behave rudely or seem to be your greatest enemy. It’s not the time to express your anger and prove him or her wrong. It is quite likely that your friend expects you to be wiser in difficult situations and wants you to admit your mistakes. Love is expressed in a variety of ways.

Be prepared to face difficulties even if you have had enough. There is an old saying,“Every difficulty is a chance!” Be prepared and let them come and get you annoyed; they will make you stronger and wiser as a person.

1. What can we learn from the cartoon characters according to Paragraph 2?
A.Always be there for our friends when they need us.
B.The nearest and dearest friends may be enemies.
C.Fight with the nearest and dearest friends.
D.Without friends, we can do nothing at all.
2. What does the underlined word “witty” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Strong.B.Wise.
C.Confident.D.Hopeful.
3. What should you do if your best friend behaves rudely to you?
A.Show your anger to him or her.
B.Try to prove him or her wrong.
C.See it as a way of expressing love.
D.Regard him or her as your greatest enemy.
4. What does the old saying in the last paragraph tell us?
A.Becoming confident in solving all problems.
B.Seeing how wise we can be in the face of challenges.
C.Taking the chance to find our best and true friends.
D.Making use of every difficulty to improve ourselves

It was Mr Morgan’s first day as a teacher. As a young teacher, Mr Morgan was determined to establish himself as strict but fair.

As he launched into the lecture, the classroom door suddenly opened. A boy walked in. “You’re 20 minutes late. Could you introduce yourself?” Mr Morgan said.

“I’m Archie,“ replied the boy with tired eyes. Archie looked very untidy, as though he hadn’t slept well. “I’m sorry. I overslept. I didn’t mean to come in late. I was just tired.”

As Mr Morgan saw Archie’s notebook, his expression grew uneasy.“You didn’t do your homework.” He scolded (责骂) the boy in front of the whole class. “This is unacceptable. I want to meet your parents tomorrow.”

But Archie never showed up in class the following day and Mr Morgan started to worry. As he prepared to leave after class, he noticed an older woman waiting outside the classroom.

“I’m Archie’s grandmother,” the woman told Mr Morgan. “My grandson was a little sick, so I told him not to go to school...Archie told me you wanted to meet his parents. I’m worried about his recent behavior in class. ”She explained Archie’s father was killed in a motorcycle crash some years ago. His mother has been dealing with some issues since then.

That same evening, Mr Morgan drove to Archie’s address. “I was just passing by and thought I’d meet Archie. Can I see him?” Archie’s grandmother stammered(结结巴巴地说),“Archie has gone to get medicine. Besides, I should start cleaning, so if you don’t mind...”Mr Morgan understood talking to the grandmother would be useless, so he left the house. As he headed back, he ran into Archie. The boy was dirty and exhausted. Archie looked up at Mr Morgan, his eyes wide with fear and embarrassment. “Mr Morgan,... please don’t come here again..I’m tired, and I have to wash up.”
