A Fresh Start at College

After my parents drove off and left me standing at the parking lot with my luggage, I felt very awkward and thought everyone on the new campus was watching me. Finally, I decided to do what I had been doing: Keep my ears open and my mouth shut, and try to appear as mature as I could. However, no matter how hard I tried to be mature, I still felt a little bit embarrassed when I dragged my luggage along the way to my new dorm. Having unpacked my luggage and settled down in my dorm, I spent the rest of the day seeking out each of my classrooms so that I could march in without asking silly questions.

The next morning I went to my first class early. Once I was in the room, however, another problem awaited me. Where to sit? After much hesitation, I chose a seat in the first row and to the side.

“Welcome to Biology 101,” the professor began.

Oh, my God! I had thought it was a literature class. A cold sweat broke out on the back of my neck. I took out of my schedule and checked the room number. I was in the right room but the wrong building.

“So now what?” I wondered. “Get up and leave in the middle of the lecture? Would everyone laugh at me?”

In the end, I decided to settle into my chair and tried to look as serious as a biology major might be.

After class I felt a little bit hungry and hurried to the cafeteria. I filled my plate with sandwiches and was heading for the seat when I accidentally stepped on a rotten banana on the ground. I lost my balance and my plate fell to the floor.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel (吵架) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”

“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me.” she replied.

“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you remember the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock: she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”

On the way home. Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It had been one of those terrible days. My three-month-old son, Tate, had not napped all day and now lay with his head on my shoulder, crying at times. I looked around. Laundry was waiting for the washing machine, dirty diapers(尿布)were giving out a smell, and the kitchen was also a mess and not to mention preparing dinner for my husband. I surveyed my dirty and disorderly little world. Tiredness and boredom washed over me, leaving me lightheaded and upset. When would this day end? Who could give me a hand?

For the last couple of weeks, I had managed to have the house cleaned and dinner well under way when my husband Jim got home from work at the end of the day. He worked in a company all day and I got to stay home with the baby. It seemed like a fair trade. So I struggled to offer him a comfortable house and a delicious dinner when he arrived home. Actually, Jim had been very impressed and he was always generous to say I had done a good job. His understanding and praise made me very happy with myself. Once a while I thought how smooth my life was!

This week, however, everything changed.

Tate was not in normal state. He was getting his first tooth, which made him uncomfortable. Nothing seemed to relieve his pain for long. He seemed glued to me all day. He felt painful so he had a hard time having a short sleep. Therefore, I was unlikely to spare time to manage the housework.

Now it was 5: 00 pm. My husband, Jim, was on his way home. I heated leftovers(剩菜)while holding my crying little guy. I felt more and more anxious. Then I heard the door opened and Jim came in. He surveyed the mess in the kitchen. “Not a good day?” When he turned to me, he didn’t need an answer. He could see I was tired and still in the sweats.

At a neighbor’s pool the summer after sixth grade, Charley yelled those famous last words, “Hey, watch this!” As he dove into the pool, I froze. It wasn’t the deep end!

Charley was hurt bad when he hit the concrete bottom of the swimming pool. The paramedic said he might have broken his back and could lose the use of his legs. His life would change forever. I didn’t see Charley for over a month after he was carried away in the screaming ambulance.

When I went to visit Charley in the hospital, his “Hey, dude, how’s it going?” was greeted by a grunt.

Looking small and pale, Charley growled,

“I can’t walk—how do you think I feel? I wish I was dead!”

“Bro, you’ll get well! You’re tough.”

“No, the doc said I won’t.”

“Aw, man. That suck!” And the conversation died right there.

I didn’t go back after that. I just didn’t know what to say. When Charley got out of the hospital, I went over to his house a few times and played video games, but it just wasn’t the same. Not only was my friend’s body damaged, so was his spirit. I wanted to help and be a good friend but didn’t know how now.

Charley came back to middle school in the fall, but he had a tough time all year. I pushed his wheelchair to help him get to class on time. But Charley had to find someone else if I was at ball practice. Or he could just be late. I wanted to help my friend to make it all better but knew I couldn’t.

One day Charley dropped his cell phone. As he tried to lean down and pick it up, he tumbled out of his wheelchair. I helped him get back into his chair. Though Charley wasn’t hurt, he was so embarrassed that he didn’t talk to anyone the rest of the day. Charley become sadder and sadder, and I spent less and less time with him as the year passed. Since then, I didn’t see much of Charley because I didn’t have time for video games.

However, I was shocked right before eighth grade started to see Charley sailing down the sidewalk with a big black dog by his wheelchair.

My Best Examination

One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was established to provide opportunities for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part of the cost of board, and at the same time be taught some trade or industry.

I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once to go to that school. Finally the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small, cheap bag that contained what few articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been away from home many hours before it began to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my fare (路费) to Hampton.

By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton Institute after a number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented myself before the head teacher for assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food, a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a worthless loafer (游荡者).

I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to impress her in all the ways I could with my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to show what was in me.

After some time, the head teacher said to me, “The adjoining (隔壁的) classroom needs sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it.”

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Donna is my sister, and I had always considered her beautiful. Our father called her his princess, and in high school, she was known as the school babe. Our parents were protective of us, particularly our father, who kept close watch over the friends she made.

One Saturday in April, a boy invited Donna to a park with four other friends. Unfortunately, on their way to the park, their car crashed into a guardrail and flipped over three times before it came to a stop on its roof. Donna was pulled from the car and rushed to the hospital without delay.

Donna was in the hospital for two weeks. Many of her friends went to see her, especially Claudia, who was there a lot. However, Mom and Dad never liked Claudia. I don’t really know why. They just didn’t like her being around.

Donna returned home with the entire top half of her head shaved. She had hundreds of stitches (缝线), some of which came across her forehead and between her left eye and eyebrow. Knowing Donna’s concern for her appearance, Mom found her a human hair wig (假发) that perfectly matched her hair.

Donna finally recovered and went back to school. But she never felt good in school. There was a very loud-mouthed, self-centered girl in Donna’s class who took great pleasure in teasing her. This girl, seated behind Donna, would pull slightly on Donna’s wig and mockingly said, “Hey, Wiggy, let’s see your scars (伤疤)”. Then she would laugh.

Donna endured this mistreatment in silence until the day she told Claudia. From then on, Claudia kept a close eye on my sister, preventing anyone from bothering her. There was something about Claudia that was frightening, even to the worst kids in school. Nobody messed with her. Unfortunately, though, Claudia wasn’t always around, and the teasing and name-calling continued.

One day, Claudia came to our home with a special surprise.

7 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On the first day of Grade 6, I sat in my quiet classroom and observed all the people I would eventually be friend. I looked around and noticed that most kids were dressed in their nicest clothes. My eyes stopped on a shy-looking girl in the back of the room. She wore an old yellow shirt with a pair of worn jeans. Her hair was unusually short and unwashed. I caught myself thinking, “That’s disgusting (令人反感的). Doesn’t she know what a bath is?” As I looked around, I found others were probably thinking the same.

The teacher began checking the attendance. “Terri Jackson?” the teacher asked. Silence. “Um, Terri Jackson?” Finally we heard a trembling answer from the back of the room. We all turned back to see what had happened. “Frightened Terri’s shirt has a crack!” one boy joked. “Eww, I bet it’s a hundred years old!” another girl said. One comment after another brought a roar of laughter. I was probably laughing the loudest. Certainly, it made her feel awkward. Terri was the joke of the whole sixth grade that year.

With my birthday coming closer, I began to invite my classmates. It struck me that I should also invite Terri to make us happier. So I came to Terri’s seat. “Hey Scary—I mean Terri—you want to come to my birthday party on Friday? “A lot of girls were laughing beside us. I noticed Terri’s face buried in her hands. She was crying.

“What’s got you all upset? All I did was invite you over, ”I whispered. She looked up and watched my eyes. “Really?” That was all she could say. Her seldom-heard voice amazed me. “I guess so. ”My voice sounded surprisingly sincere. I’d never seen her smile so brightly. I felt good the rest of the day. I was even looking forward to my birthday party.

8 . 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Mom, I’m ready to go,” called Jason.

Every Saturday, Jason looked forward to going to Chinatown to shop for food because his mom let him pick his favorite snacks: roast pork buns and bubble tea.

The streets in Chinatown were crowded with cars and pedestrians. His mother could not find the same exotic vegetables in the local supermarkets, so they always came here to shop. What fascinated Jason was tasty roast pork, even the whole pigs hanging on big hooks in the windows, their skins roasted to a glistening brown. Jason’s mouth would water just looking at them.

As they passed the newsstand carrying Chinese newspapers and magazines, Jason spotted an old man sitting on the sidewalk. His hair was long, white, and messy. The face beneath was lined, dirty, and unshaven. Frayed and torn clothing wrapped around his thin frame, and in this kind of cold weather, he even wore sandals, his feet blue with cold. He banged an empty can against the sidewalk. As Jason walked by, he could smell a musty odor and pinched his nostrils together. The old man reached out and touched Jason’s left leg. Instinctively, Jason gathered all his strength to jerk(猛拉) his leg away and kick the old man’s hand heavily. Frightened, he hurried to catch up with his mother without looking back.

“Mom, the old man touched me,” he cried, “He touched me with his dirty hands. It’s disgusting! And he smelled too.”

Jason’s mother glanced back at the man with a look of understanding and said gently, “Jason, he can’t help it. He’s homeless. He didn’t mean any harm.”

Mom’s words made Jason look back at the old man with regret, who now was looking up at other passersby, still banging his can.

On their way home, Jason asked, his voice filled with concern. “Why is that old man homeless? Where does he sleep?”

“I don’t know. It’s tough to be homeless, especially in this cold weather. He did look quite weak,” his mother replied.

Mom’s words made Jason’s regret deepened. He confessed his heavy kick to his mother, who reminded him that it was crucial to acknowledge his mistake and try to make up for it.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I’d just returned from a beautiful fall early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight.

My little dog ran in excitement that we would do a repeat of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but in vain.

At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch in exhaustion. At my age, one trip is usually plenty! I began to take key inventory(库存). The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. I had a spare car key, but it was temperamental(不可靠的), and the key ring would be expensive to replace. The iron heart decoration made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. But life is too short to agonize(折磨)over these things, I reminded myself.

That night, it turned colder and we had a snow shower. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening.

It was peaceful until I heard the horrible screech of my car alarm bursting from the garage. I rushed to the car, inserted(插入)the temperamental key in the door and finally opened it, and then started it until the alarm stopped.

Back in the house, I waited uneasily, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Assuming it was a neighbor ready to be angry with me, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready.

10 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Alex was a friendly boy, but he had a bad temper and often found it challenging to control his anger. Whenever something didn’t go his way or if he felt upset, a fiery anger would build up inside him like an angry monster.

One sunny afternoon, Alex went to the playground with his friends, Sarah and Ben. They were excited to play on the swings, slide, and monkey bars. As they started playing, Alex’s turn on the swing was interrupted by another child who cut in line. Alex felt his anger rising inside him, and without thinking, he shouted at the child very angrily, demanding his turn back. Sarah and Ben looked at Alex with surprise, scare and depression. They didn’t like it that their friend lost his temper like a monster and yelled. They stopped playing together.

Alex’s anger not only ruined his own mood but also spoiled (破坏) the fun for his friends and the other children at the playground. Feeling ashamed and realizing the consequences of his actions, Alex slumped (跌坐) down on a nearby bench. He saw his friends playing happily without him, and he felt upset at losing control.

Alex’s memories flooded back when his friends and family were often taken aback by his outbursts. When his best friend, Emily, wanted to play a game he didn’t like, he would shout and throw a tantrum (发脾气), refusing to play with her. His little sister accidentally knocked over his tower of blocks, he would explode in a fit of rage, yelling and stomping his feet.

He had lost a lot of fiends and hurt his family because of his anger. Now he might lose these friends too. He realized that his mean words constantly hurt the people he cared about. He didn’t want to be like a monster anymore, so he decided to find a better way to handle his anger.
