In the beginning, she worked as a sales clerk at a store. But as her children grew older, she knew she must find a new job which could pay a higher salary (薪水). One day, Catherine was walking home after her shift (轮班) at the store when she spotted a construction site. Realizing that the money she would make by working there was more than her current salary, she thought she might be able to work there. She then approached the manager. After learning about her circumstances, the manager hired her on the spot. Then she left her job at the store and worked full-time at the construction site.
However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site. Every morning, Catherine would wake up and make breakfast for her children before dropping them at school. Then, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One weekend, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming contest in school that required mothers to participate. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said. “I won’t go there with you, Mom,” Peter replied. When asked why, Peter said that he would have to touch Catherine’s hands to recognize her. “Everyone would look at them, but your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. In July of 2021, Julia, a curious 5-year-old little girl, followed her dad into the unforgiving and dangerous Siberian wilderness near their home located in the remote region of the Sakha Republic.
At first, Julia's mother May believed Julia had gone with her father to visit her grandma. Unfortunately, the area they lived in was so remote that it did not have cell phone service, so she could not call her husband to confirm. It was only after her husband returned two days later that they realized Julia had made her way into the thick forest unnoticed and became lost.
Panicked and concerned, Julia's family instantly called for help. It wasn't long before hundreds of people showed up to seek the girl. Rescue workers, police, firefighters, and volunteers searched like crazy for the girl. They also got the aid of six search dogs, and a helicopter with technology to look for Julia in the dark but with no luck after a day's search.
Julia's family feared the worst, primarily since the area was well known for wild animals such as wolves and bears. Not to mention the fact that it was Siberia, which meant it got bitterly cold at night. Many of the rescuers were forced to face the reality that the girl was most likely dead. They knew a small child wouldn't last long out in the cold with little to protect her.
Early in the next morning, the police officer David who was in charge of the search hurried to Julia's house to ask May for more details. It suddenly occurred to May that a neighborhood dog, which Julia named Nadia, would probably follow her into the forest.
"Julia spares her food and feeds Nadia every day and gradually Julia has developed a close bond with the wandering dog. They are attached to each other and always inseparable. They must be together now, aren't they?" May looked into David's eyes and asked eagerly.
