1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

An A for Mrs.Bartlett

I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs.Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying. On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs.Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent(正派的;体面的) people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.

The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy's name was called. So I'm in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!

Then I heard it. The last group: “Mauro,Juliette, Rachel,Karina.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group —the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits(不合群的人)!

A Fresh Turkey before Thanksgiving Day

Margaret hadn’t bought herself a new dress for years. As a homemaker with health issues that kept her from working, she raised the kids while her husband worked at the nearby factory and brought home just enough for them to get by.

As Thanksgiving Day neared, Margaret cut costs and saved money. Her goal was to have enough money to buy a fresh turkey for the first time ever, instead of a frozen one. Every year Margaret would find herself staring longingly through the glass case at the local supermarket at the “fresh turkeys,” wishing she could afford one.

With the day of thanks fast approaching, Margaret took her shopping list and money over to the store and went to the meat counter to inquire about the birds. As Sal showed her the price of a fresh turkey, she realized her dream was impossible.

Sal found himself looking at her weathered shoes and faded coat. He was moved by her situation, saying, “These fresh birds are expensive, but the day before Thanksgiving, we mark them down to half‐off.” Margaret’s eyes lit up and she said, “Then I’ll see you the day before Thanksgiving.”

As Turkey Day crept closer, Sal noticed his fresh birds selling much faster than usual. The birds would surely run out before the big day. He knew it would take a special Thanksgiving act of kindness to make sure Margaret got one. So, he took one out of the case and hid it in the freezer in the back.

On the day before Thanksgiving, Margaret showed up to see if any fresh turkeys remained. Sal marched to the back and brought her the one he had saved. Delighted, Margaret headed for the checkout. But the grocery store manager didn’t know about Sal’s Thanksgiving act of kindness, warning him that he’d broken the rules by storing a fresh turkey in the back freezer.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a winter Sunday good for skiing, Sue arrived at their holiday chalet (棚屋) with joy. Sue’s skis were sticking out behind her. Mark, another skier, tripped over Sue’s skis. Before Sue could apologize, Mike shouted,“Your skis are in the way. You’ve got big smelly feet!” In view of his attitude, Sue ignored him. Mark lost face and was more angry.

Then Sue skied down the mountain. As a good skier, she didn’t fall over. Mark, along with his good friend David, was watching her with envy and anger. They were also good skiers but they didn’t know Sue very well. “She’s good,” David said. “But we’re better,” Mark responded with dissatisfaction.

The young people skied all day. They enjoyed themselves and forgot everything. On Wednesday morning, the young people were waiting for the ski lift (滑雪电缆车) when their teacher announced a ski race. The race would be arranged for the last day of the holiday on a long and difficult ten-kilometer piste (滑雪道). Everybody wanted to win! They went up the mountain, put on their skis and skied down the piste, practicing for the race. Sue skied fast, so did Mark and David. Obviously, these three became powerful opponents.

It was Saturday and the race was going to be held in the afternoon. Sue was hungry and left her skis at the side of a café. She sat down and ordered lunch. Later, David and Mark came in. They also headed to the side to put their skis there. Mark noticed Sue’s skis and aimed a kick angrily at them. Then he found a screw (螺丝) on Sue’s ski was loose, unsure whether it was caused by the force or it was like that originally. “Sue’s skis won’t work. We’re sure to win,” Mark said and pointed. They smiled knowingly at each other.

Among the beautiful items in an eight-year-old girl’s room, one caught the sight-a broken doll with several lines sewed on it. If the doll could talk, it would tell a story of two kids and the relationship among family members.

Amy has been living in the arms of her parents for five years since she was born, and she has been enjoying the unique attention. However, things began to change when the family had a new member, her little brother, Leo.

On hearing the news that she would have a little brother or sister, Amy felt at a loss. She didn’t know what it meant to her. However, with the birth of Leo, Amy began to know that she wouldn’t be the only kid. Seeing parents pay more attention to the little baby and hearing more and more people say her parents wouldn’t love her anymore, Amy became sensitive. Worried about her position in the hearts of her parents, she began to have incomprehensible resistance to little Leo. As time went by, Amy became more and more sensitive and concerned about her uniqueness and belongings.

The other day, Amy came back home happily with the praise from her teacher. Seeing Leo holding her favorite do II made Amy feel very upset. In her eyes, the doll was not just a toy, but a part of her childhood, and a symbol of being loved. “Give it back to me, Leo” Amy shouted. “No, I want to play” “It’s mine, not yours.” Amy stepped forward to Leo. “But I want.” Leo insisted. Leo’s refusal led to Amy grabbing the toy without hesitation. In the process of the struggle, the doll accidentally was split into two parts, broken. Leo fell onto the ground, crying loudly. Amy’s face turned pale, feeling like sitting on pins and needles. She was in fear that Leo got hurt and She was also afraid her mother would blame her, and think her an inconsiderate girl.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?” “Oh, yes…but I don’t have money on me,” she replied. “That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.“What is it?” asked the man kindly. “Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered Mother’s familiar face and weathered (沧桑的) hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”

On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

It had been a long, tiring day because Carl had driven for 12 hours without a break. “Ah, I can finally get home now,” the tired driver sighed. He crossed a corner and noticed a panic-stricken woman getting off a taxi with a child in her arms.

“What’s going on? Why is she shouting at the driver?” Carl wondered and slowed down near them. Carl was curious and got off the cab to find out what happened. Then he realized the woman was begging the driver not to leave.

“Hey, Miss! Why are you crying?” Carl saw her holding a little boy in her arms, who had difficulty breathing. Carl realized the boy was having a seizure (疾病的突然发作) and asked the woman to get into his taxi. “He’s having an attack! Please hurry up, Miss! We have to get him to the hospital!” Carl drove as fast as he could, praying not to get trapped in traffic.

The woman told Carl that she and her four-year-old son, Tyler, were returning from the park when it started raining. “I told the driver I would pay him once I got home because I didn’t have my purse with me. But then my son suddenly had a seizure, so I asked the driver to take us to the hospital instead. But he refused.”

“Don’t worry, Miss. I will get you to the hospital on time, alright?” Half an hour later, they arrived at the hospital. Tyler was rushed inside for treatment.

An hour later, the doctor came out and said, “Mrs. Thomas, your son is out of danger now. But it could have been fatal if you hadn’t made it here on time.” Mrs. Thomas immediately looked at Carl and joined his hands in tears, thanking him for saving her son’s life. Tears fogged in Carl’s eyes. He was glad Tyler was out of danger. Later, he dropped them off at home, and when Mrs. Thomas came out to pay him, he refused. “I have a policy. NO FARES for those making trips to the hospital!” revealed Carl.

When the sun rose one summer morning, Mark, a high school student, was riding his bike on the way to school as usual. He admired the attractive sights along the road with colorful flowers on both sides, and fresh air full of pleasant smell. It seemed to be a great day.

Mark was passing a park when he noticed an elderly woman walking about 100 meters ahead slowly falling down onto the ground. He felt his heart standing still with great concern. With nobody else around to turn to for help, Mark decided to ride over to see what was wrong with her for himself.

As he approached the old lady, he found her lying on the ground and looking pale and weak. Judging from her untidy clothes and messy hair, she might have been out for more than one day.

“Are you all right, Granny?” Shaking her arm, Mark asked anxiously. The old lady opened her eyes, a confused and lost expression on her face. She hesitated and then took a closer look. Immediately a big smile appeared on her face. Grasping Mark’s hand, she said with shining eyes, “John, there you are at last! My son, I’m hungry... hungry... Give me food...” She repeated, patting herself on the stomach.

Not knowing what to do, Mark anxiously asked her, “Granny, where is your home? Can you tell me who your son is?” But the old lady didn’t respond, only mumbling (嘟囔), “I’m hungry. Give me food, John.” Obviously, she mistook Mark for her son.

All of a sudden, Mark realized the old lady might be a patient with Alzheimer’s (痴呆症)disease because his own late grandpa used to suffer from such a condition. “She might have gone out without being noticed by her family. They must have been worried about her. Maybe they’re searching like crazy for her everywhere.” Mark thought to himself, “But she is so starved. I must give her some food before I get in touch with her family.”
