We lived in a quiet street with very little traffic so my mom let my brothers and me play out in the front yard a lot. One day we were outside playing when I saw something move under a bush near our neighbor's house. It looked very strange so we went over to check it out.

It was a puppy(小狗)II sat down in the grass and clapped my hands and it came running over to me and jumped on my lap.I was so happy.I had been begging my parents for a puppy for a long time and here it was.My brothers were going crazy.

I carefully carried the puppy to our yard and yelled with excitement,"Mom,Mom,guess what I found under the bush next door?"My mom came out of the room, looked at me,looked at the puppy and then back at me. "Mom,I think it's lost;it doesn't have a collar(项圈)or any tags.   And Mom,it surely looks hungry.”

Mom got a bowl and filled it with water. Then she got some food from the refrigerator and put it in another bowl.I put the puppy down. She ran joyfully over to the bowls and started eating and drinking.I was right…she was hungry. After a full meal, she curled up into a ball and went to sleep. My brothers and I just sat on the floor and watched her contentedly, praying this   moment would last forever.

My mom said that we needed to try and find the owner of the puppy.I didn't want to do that.I wanted to keep the puppy for my own.But Mom said that the owner was probably worried about the puppy and sorry that she was gone. She asked me how I would feel if I had lost my puppy.Would I want the person who found it to try and find me?Or just keep the puppy?

"Maybe she is right,”I thought.

A Move to a New Life

I was shocked when my parents told me we were moving from Baton Rouge, Louisana, to New York. First, I complained about not being able to make new friends and not knowing anything about New York.

My mom said, “You’ll make new friends, and it’s not like you know anything about Baton Rouge anyway.

I protested, “But I don’t want to leave Louisiana. The weather is perfect here!”

My mom shot me a disapproving look and said, “You’ll get used to the weather in New York.”

I remember thinking about running away and joining a circus somewhere, but then I remembered that circus animals smell really bad, and I would miss my parents. So I wandered around the house pick picking up random things, like my baseball and glove, and throwing them into a cardboard box. I felt like a big, heavy rain cloud I was hanging over my head.

Within three days, all the furniture we were taking e taking with us was packed into a moving van (小型货车). Oder things were ready to be sold for nowhere near what we paid for them. Little by little our yard sale decreased until no one even looked at the well-worn coffee table, chewed-up plastic toys, and slightly damaged coffee cups—all of which I had my teeth on at one time or another

The next day was Monday, and we got up early to beat the traffic. I’ll spare you the details of how boring it was to sit in a van and watch each tree as it passed by only to see another tree getting closer until it a so passed by. Halfway there, we stopped at a motel (汽车旅馆) to spend the night. This time, no one could sleep because of the smell coming from the heater in the room. By the time we finally made it to New York, it was the middle of the night, and my head was already drooping (低垂) on to my shoulder.

I checked my phone again. Still nothing from my 13-year-old granddaughter, Noe Why won’t she return my text messages? I wondered.

Noe was my grandchild. For years, Noe and her family lived close by and she and I spent a lot of time together. It made my day to see Noe’s face light up whenever I arrived. Then my husband and I moved to a different part. Actually it wasn’t an impossible distance. But with traffic it now took up to two hours to drive to Noe’s house. So, my regular visits with Noe came to a sudden end. The last time I saw her, she was excited about the latest addition to her life: Golden, a puppy (小狗). Golden was just like her name, a fluffy (毛茸茸的) ball of bright yellow down. For a while, Noe and I kept in touch via text messages and phone cells. Gradually, her text replies took longer to arrive. Phone calls became brief.

“How’s school going?”

“Okay.”

“What’s your favorite subject?”

“Dunno.”

Nothing I tried seemed to break through Noe’s sudden wall of indifference (漠不关心), Was she okay? Did she even miss me? I asked about Golden every time we talked. But caring for Golden seemed more interesting to her than talking to me. She was often busy with him and didn’t come to the phone when I called.

Was I being replaced by the puppy? My cell phone rang. Noe! But there were no words in the text. Just photos. Noe on her bike with Golden on her lap. Noe and Golden walking on the street with a shining leash(狗绳) in hand. Obviously, it was carefully selected. I don’t want to be jealous (嫉妒的) of a puppy. Months passed with seldom a word from Noe. At last, I couldn’t wait. I decided to pay a visit to Noe’s house.

Upon my arrival, I said to Noe, “show me your puppy.” She was stunned (惊呆) but quickly led me to the backyard and introduced me to her fluffy friend, giving detailed descriptions of his preferences. It was more words than we’d exchanged in a year,

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every time I sat down with my family and looked through our photos — holidays, trips, or vacations, there was always something missing. It was me. It was not just because I was the one behind the camera, but because I avoided being photographed. I always felt I looked awful in photos.

There were a few photos of me on my birthday that always made me feel bad. Generally speaking, I didn’t hate my appearance; I just wasn’t very photogenic (上相的). Therefore, when it came to family photos, I was missing. Gradually, I didn’t feel and look confident, and seldom smiled.

Then I met Mary. I was attending a writers’ meeting in North Carolina and she was a photographer who was good at photo shooting for writers. As a new writer, I needed a good personal photo for business cards and social media. I decided to give Mary a try.

The day of my appointment (约定) arrived. I picked out clothes that were most suitable for me. I checked myself in the mirror and felt I looked okay, but I was not sure whether the photos would reflect that. By the time Mary was to take photos of me, it began to have a light rain. My hair had started out nicely, but I knew the rain would destroy it.

I unwillingly walked into the room. Mary greeted me with a sunny smile. I felt relaxed. I was sure that she could sense I was not confident about my appearance because she immediately began to comfort me. She promised my photos would be wonderful. And she said how sad it made her that so many women thought so little of their appearance and how much this would hurt their self-respect.

The light rain stopped. Mary led me outside onto the grass-covered grounds of the meeting center. With the bright new green of spring and flowers seen everywhere, it was the perfect place for photos, even on a cloudy day.

I just wanted to share something that happened last Friday afternoon. I was at a restaurant eating with my family. As we finished up, a homeless man entered with a handcart (手推车) full of his belongings, who was clearly very hot from walking outside and clearly hungry and thirsty.

When we got up to leave, he walked past us and sat at the table we’d just left and started eating the food we had left.

We noticed the restaurant workers signed to each other to take away the plates from the table. As we walked out, we heard someone say “excuse me”.

It was the man sitting at our table. He noticed that I’d left my purse behind and he was walking towards us to give it back.

I said thank you from my heart. My husband then ordered him a meal and a few drinks to express our thanks.

On our drive home, I took the opportunity to explain to my six-year-old son what had happened and the importance of helping others, as well as being thankful to have food to eat and a house to live in.

In a further shaming and annoying turn, two days later I looked in my purse for a card and found I had $50 in cash in it. I so badly wished I could have given it to him! He could easily have taken it but he didn’t. I was just too busy trying to explain the importance of kindness to my child and it never crossed my mind to check the purse in the first place.

I was surprised to find that the busy traffic lines outside Layla’s primary school had remarkably disappeared—I easily found a parking space and, for once, I was on time. The school bell rang, and a group of children merrily made their way through the gate. However, something was different—the children were all squeezing (挤进) into cars in groups of three or four.

Before I could ask my daughter Layla, Mr. Trent, the head teacher, approached me. “Mrs. Pavis, didn’t you see our letter?” Letter? What letter? I had a habit of not paying attention to them and, in most cases, not reading them. “The letter? Of course. I didn’t notice that. I’ve been away for work.”

Now, at home, I examined through Layla’s messy school bag. Eventually, I found several letters, all about the problem of parking outside the school gates. Obviously, due to some parents parking improperly, the police were about to step in. “Why didn’t you give me these letters?” I demanded. Layla raised her shoulders. “I forgot.” I was about to give her a lecture when it occurred to me that I had always forgotten—I had forgotten to give Layla her money for the cooking class that morning and forgotten to hang out the kids’ washed clothes.

I calmed down and realized that they wanted parents to carpool (拼车). Over the next half hour, I called the parents of Layla’s friends, asking if they would like to carpool with us. Unfortunately, they had already made arrangements. It was my own fault—I should have read those letters long ago. “Um... I overheard others talking about it,” Layla said, “They said they didn’t know who would carpool with us because we’re always late.” I suddenly felt sorry. We were a disorganized family.

Ever since my Dad died, my life had changed. My Mom was always really busy with her work, and she didn’t spend any time with me anymore. I had to go to a daycare every day after school, eagerly waiting for Mom’s work to be done and picking me up. It was even a luxury to stay with her on Sunday.

One day, at dinner time, I begged Mom to take me to the fair on Sunday.

“Lilly, you know I have to work that day.” Mom refused immediately.

“But we never get to spend time together anymore! Can’t you take Sunday off?” I asked.

Mom placed a plate in front of me and kissed my head. I smiled and licked my lips as she had given me a piece of cherry pie. Then I looked into my Mom’s brown eyes and asked one last time, “Can’t you take Sunday off?”

Mom raised one eyebrow, staring at me. Maybe she didn’t want to make me disappointed and agreed that she would attempt to spare some time on Sunday.

It was Sunday morning, and I ran to see if Mom was awake. She was making pancakes in the kitchen with her work clothes on. Mom felt my disappointed staring and tried to explain. She bent down next to me and put her hand on my shoulder, “Sorry, Lilly! I have to go to work today.”

Tears streamed down my face as I yelled, “You never have time for me!” And I ran into my room and slammed the door.

As I was crying on my bed I could hear Mom talk on the phone. She asked her friend Charlie to come over and watch me. Half an hour later, Charlie arrived and Mom left. I heard him knock on my bedroom door and say, “Lilly, your Mom made pancakes. Do you want to come out and have some?”

“No!” I screamed.

“Your Mom told me why you felt upset, and she left a note for you.” Charlie muffled.

Kids with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) join race.

Thanks to the efforts of some high school student athletes, who helped the physically challenged, the smiles on the faces of 9-year-old Lucas Myrick and 8-year-old Elsa Dent were a little bit brighter.

Lucas and Elsa had cerebral palsy (脑瘫), a condition that limited their physical ability, and couldn’t walk as fast as their peers who were free to walk everywhere. However, they had bright spirits and always held positive attitudes towards adversity and life in all aspects. Impressively, they participated in the Park Lane Elementary School’s annual Fun Run. They wanted to demonstrate that they could participate in the race as the normal kids at school. They were convinced that they could fight prejudice against the disabled in their own way.

When Lucas’ mother, Janell, mentioned their passion for the Fun Run to the athletic director of the school, he was more thanr delighted to assist them in taking part. At last, two members of the high school team showed up to push Lucas in his wheelchair. It was not just the football team that turned up to support the event. Members of the high school cross-country team (越野队) joined in the activity aimed to build up the strength physically and cultivate perseverance in face of difficulties mentally. They ran alongside Elsa who participated in the Fun Run using her walker.

The run was about 1.07 miles. But the athletes did much more than simply pushed Lucas in the Fun Run-they formed an emotional bond with him and even came up with a team name. “The team is called the wheelies!” Lucas said with a satisfied smile on his face. The players pushed Lucas at a steady pace and at the last part of the course, Lucas got out of his wheelchair to give running with his new friends a try. “I was beating one of them on my legs,” Lucas yelled at the top of his voice excitedly. “I was running ahead of him. he couldn’t even keep up with me!” Lucas wheeled himself proudly and gave the audience a triumphant (欢欣鼓舞) smile. He waved his hands wildly to cheer Elsa on.

Word spread that Derek Rodgers, who had Down's Syndrome (唐氏综合征), wanted to attend the Homecoming Dance (返校日舞会).

I, a new journalist for the Campus News, was curious who would be his dance partner and decided to cover his story. When I accompanied him on the way home one day, we were approached by Kelsey Stuart, a popular student.

“Derek, I’d like to ask you to the Dance,” she smile.

Derek was shocked. He couldn’t believe that one of the prettiest girls in school was asking him.

Derek’s face went red. “Why me?” he asked, “And shouldn’t boys be the ones to do the asking?”

“I doubt you would, after all the rough experiences you’ve had. And we actually have more in common than you think. We both really want to go to the Dance. And we are not like those who are only-concerned about personal appearance.”

“But what do you see in me? How can I be the sort of guy you want to go with?”

“I know you are a gentleman and you'll treat me like a lady and I’ll feel safe with you.” She said, leaving with a smile.

The entire school went crazy when they learned that Kelsey was Derek’s dance partner.

At first there were words that were not so nice about them. Their classmate, Billy, made fun of them by giving them stupid names. Betty, Kelsey’s best friend, stopped hanging out with her because she couldn't understand her choice at all.

Despite the words around, every day after school, the two still stayed behind to practice their dance routine. Kelsey patiently taught Derek how to lead the steps, move to the beat of the music and spin (旋转)with elegance. Slowly but surely. they improved their dancing together.

The day of the Dance arrived. Kelsey got into a new dress and Derek put on a well-cut suit.

When I first moved to the south of America in the summer holiday before middle school, I realized that I was stepping into a completely different world. New Orleans, Louisiana, was unlike any place I had ever been to. In the French Quarter, tourists walked around all year with long skinny cups in their hands, and there was a popular game going on the streets which were crowded with cars but had few people. What surprised me more than anything, though, was the constant friendliness and compassion of the people of New Orleans.

“What can I get for you, sugar?” a waitress about my age asked me on my first day in New Orleans.

I was taken aback. The waitress did not even know me, but she treated me like family. She smiled down at me as I pointed to an item on the menu.

“Is the pasta good?” I asked her.

“It’s not my favorite,” she admitted with a smile. “But I’m more of a girl who prefers rice!” She shrugged, letting out a loud laughter.

I looked at her in shock. What was I supposed to say to that? I couldn’t believe that the waitress had just prevented me from ordering something. Actually, she had given me her honest opinion, as if we were best friends. She even told me her name—Mary. She even told me that she just worked as a part-time waitress and that she would be a high school student soon.

After a few days in New Orleans, I got used to kind reminders and polite greetings. I also realized how comforting it was to be treated like I belong wherever I went.

As soon as I settled into my new high school, I adapted myself to the school life. I was drawn to the lively music scene that New Orleans was famous for. I was a trumpet (小号) player, and I wanted to join the school music club. However, I was afraid that I was too poor in music to be qualified for the school music club.
