Liam, a fifth-grader, moved with his mum for a new apartment in a relatively cheaper area of the city after his father’s unexpected death, and began attending a neighbourhood school.
Since he was an introvert (内向的人), the thought of making friends always made him feel nervous, and moving into a new neighbourhood meant he had to face his fears. On his first day, he didn’t talk to anyone or try to make friends, and during the mealtime, he sat at the corner table in the cafeteria and ate his lunch alone. No one in the class stepped forward to welcome him. Instead, they ignored him and refused to sit next to him in class.
The next day, he was sitting alone in the classroom when a boy approached him and asked, “Can I sit next to you?”
“Sure,” Liam smiled.
“I’m Joel. And you? ”
“Liam.”
“Is it your first day today?”
“No, it’s my second day. I recently moved into this neighbourhood.”
“Oh, I didn’t know that. I skipped (逃避) school yesterday, so I thought it was your first day today.”
As days passed, Liam and Joel discovered that they lived on the same street. After school, they often played catch in the nearby park, a game they both loved playing. It only took Liam a few weeks to become best friends with Joel.
One day, Joel skipped school, and Liam had to sit alone in class, wondering why. Feeling worried, he went to ask his class teacher.
“Liam, I’m so sorry, but your best friend got into an accident last night,” the teacher put her hand on Liam’s shoulder. “He lost his parents in the car crash.”
“Oh no!” Liam covered his face with his hands.
Two months later, Joel was allowed to go home after a spinal (脊柱的) surgery. However, he couldn’t walk and was restricted to a wheelchair. The day he arrived home with his grandmother, Liam rushed to Joel's house with a candy bar and the ball they used to play catch with Joel’s eyes lit upon seeing Liam. The boys talked to each other for hours before Liam’s mother came to pick him up at night.

When Jimmy wouldn’t share what was going on, his parents decided to visit the principal (校长), hoping he could offer the answer.
After talking with Jimmy’s classmates, the principal and his parents heard a story. Although Jimmy never talked about it, his classmates told them that he always came to school without food. The principal and his parents were shocked. No wonder Jimmy was always so hungry after school! Was there something happening on the way to school?
To make the situation clear, the principal naked Jimmy’s teacher, Mr. Green, to talk to Jimmy in private. During the conversation with the teacher. Jimmy refused to say anything about the situation, leaving everyone helpless. This left the principal with no evidence to take any action regarding the missing lunch of Jimmy.
Jimmy’s parents were becoming increasingly concerned as their child continued to come home from school without saying a word. Despite their meeting in the school, they thought that they had no other ways to discover the reason why Jimmy was always so hungry. The lack of communication with their child only added to their helplessness. They knew they needed to take action, but they had no idea where to start.
Determined to get to the bottom of the problem. Jimmy’s father derided to take action again. The next day. Jimmy’s father went to school and asked to speak with Jimmy’s teacher, Mr. Green.
When Jimmy’s father reached the school, Mr. Green spoke with him and patiently answered all of his questions. However, despite a deep conversation between them, no conclusion could be reached, which still questioned Jimmy’s parents.

After work, he likes to take an adventure in the wildness and take some photos. Whenever photographer Casey heads into the wildness, he brings along his drone (无人机) to take some photographs from a bird’s eye view.
Having the drone with him on a recent trip to the Willamette National Forest in the Cascade Mountain Range in Oregon saved his and another person’s lives.
That day, Casey was driving through the Willamette National Forest. When he arrived at his destination, he began to use his drone to take many photos, and the beautiful places made him excited. These photos made him feel a strong sense of achievement.
With a good harvest, he began to drive home. On the way home, he came across a stranger whose car was stuck. At that time, Casey was still in the deep forest. Casey volunteered to help get it out without hesitation. Unluckily, he got his own car stuck in a ditch (沟) while trying to help, leaving both people in trouble with no cell phone service for miles around.
“I am so sorry for making your car stuck here. What can we do now?” the stranger said with anxiety.
“Don’t worry! Let’s think it over! Maybe I can call my wife for help,” Casey said.
“But here is too out-of-the-way. It is surely no cell phone service. How can we call for help?” the stranger said disappointedly.
Just as they were wandering, Casey immediately recalled a movie he’d seen recently in which a character typed some messages in the phone and used a drone to lift his phone high enough to catch cell phone service in a similar situation. When the stranger heard the idea, he felt pleasantly surprised. Just right, Casey had a drone. Casey walked quickly to his car.

Today was Nisha’s turn to do a presentation. However, her hands shook so violently that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Nisha’s presentation even though she did clearly not finish. He also asked Nisha to stay after class for a moment.
“Nisha. I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, “If I give you another chance, do you think you can find your courage?” Nisha nodded, grateful for the chance. After the talk, she always kept her head down in the school and hoped this school day would end soon.
When she arrived at home, her mom was baking in the kitchen. Her mom studied Nisha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Nisha?”
Tears shone in Nisha’s eyes. Nisha told her mom the whole story. Her mom was silent for a moment and asked, “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything, but you can’t talk to your class?” She set the timer(计时器)and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Nish a followed her mom to her bedroom. There her mom showed her a book filled with pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon(丝带)that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.

The weather conditions were perfect, with mild currents and excellent sight of the beautiful ocean and the bright, vivid corals. Even with their masks on, I could see the smiles on my students’ faces.
The dive couldn’t have gone better. However, things changed as we made our way back to the boat. As we swam back along the reef, I noticed the current (水流) changing. As it did, huge quantities of trash and plastic began to flood the area. I saw small reef fish swimming amongst the straws, plastic bags and other bits of rubbish. I noticed that some of the fish were pecking away (啄) at the plastic. By the time we got back onboard the boat, there were bits of plastic floating all around us. It looked more like a trash site than the ocean.
When I got home, the first thing I did was to go online and research plastic pollution in the ocean. I was surprised to find out that over the past decade, divers and beach lovers have seen a lot of changes in the oceans. Even very remote locations were suddenly filled with plastic and other chemicals. Plastics were entering our oceans at an alarming rate—up to 12 million tons each year. This huge amount of plastic was wreaking havoc (破坏) not only on the environment, but also on the marine animals that lived in the ocean, such as sea turtles and sea birds. Some of them were sadly mistaking the pieces of plastic for food. Pollution has brought our oceans to the point of disaster, and unless we make a great change, then our oceans and all of its living things, will be at risk.
Since that unforgettable plastic-polluted dive, I have become an ocean supporter and spend my days trying to get the message out there about just how harmful ocean pollution is, not only to marine life, but also to mankind.

I was always afraid of water. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around (乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate?
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视), especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim?” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior (外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears?

If you’d told us a month ago that there would come a point when we would need space from each other, we would have said “Not a chance!”
But then Lisa’s family won a five-day stay in a mountain cabin(小屋). Because Lisa’s sister, Alana, was spending the week with her grandparents, Lisa’s mom and dad said I could come along instead.
When I told my parents about the awesome invitation, my mom said, “That sounds fun, but keep in mind that five days is a long time to spend with a friend.” I shook my head. “Lisa and I are just like fish and water. We’re happy sticking together. Plus, the cabin is near paths where we can try snowshoeing and other outdoor stuff.”
A few weeks later, Lisa and her parents and I arrived at an adorable cabin surrounded by snow-covered pine trees. “What a great place!” Lisa’s dad said.
“It’s looking a little cloudy,” said Lisa’s mom, glancing at the sky. “Let’s hope it means snow and not rain.”
As you might have guessed, the clouds did mean rain. Lots of rain. And since our major plans involved snowshoeing and watching winter wildlife, we were stuck. “I guess we’ll have to find something else to do,” said Lisa.
We found a couple of board games and a pack of cards and sat down. At first, it was fun, but we ended up playing those games for about 100 hours, stopping only to eat and sleep!
“I can’t play anymore,” I said on the third day. “How about we just read by ourselves for a while?”
“I have a better idea,” said Lisa. “How about singing instead?”
“I think a little quiet time would be nice,” I said, opening a book I had brought.
“Oh, come on! Don’t be boring. I’ll pick the first song.” Lisa started singing “Somewhere over the Rainbow.”
