4 . A new device works like a solar panel, except that it doesn't harvest energy from the sun. It absorbs energy from the cold night sky.

A prototype(原型)of the device produced enough electricity at night to power a small light bulb. A bigger version might one day light rooms or charge phones. It also could power electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack electricity.

The device makes use of the temperature difference between Earth and outer space. It then uses that difference to create electricity. As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That plate is sealed beneath a transparent(透明的)cover and surrounded with insulation(隔热材料)to keep out heat. The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate. That plate is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator.

Researchers tested a 20-centimeter prototype one clear December night in Stanford,California. The generator produced up to about 25 milliwatts of power per square meter of device. That was enough power to light a small light-emitting diode, or LED bulb. Further improvements might increase its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter. To do that, the system might need more insulation around the cool top plate.

The device also could help power remote weather stations or other environmental devices, says Aaswath Raman. He is a materials scientist who worked on the device at the University of California, Los Angeles. This may be useful in polar regions that don't see sunlight for months at a time,Raman says. “If you have some low-power load and you need to power it through three months of darkness, this might be a way.”

1. What can we know about the new device?
A.It gains energy from the sun.B.It 's been widely used in life.
C.It is cooler than a solar panel.D.It'll be popular in special areas.
2. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 3?
A.Application fields of the device.B.The developing process of the device.
C.The working principle of the device.D.Significant effects of the device.
3. How can the device produce more electricity?
A.By putting more insulation around the top plate.
B.By using it in extremely cold and clear nights.
C.By making its bottom cooler than the top plate.
D.By powering remote environmental devices.
4. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Device Using the Cold Night Sky to Produce Electricity
B.A Device Bringing New Hope for Those in the Cold Night
C.The Difference Between a Solar Panel and a New Device
D.The Temperature Difference Between Earth and Outer Space

5 . I work at a grocery store in Montreal's Plateau neighbourhood, which gets a lot of regulars. On March 12, the Quebec government announced to close all public places to stop the spread of the pandemic(流行病)of coronavirus.

The next day the store was the busiest I've ever seen. The six cash registers had to be kept open from 10 a.m. until close. It was nuts. I didn't have time to eat lunch, and whenever one of us on cash had to use the bathroom, we'd have to bring in a coworker of the floor to cover for us.

Since then, the atmosphere in the store has been different. Customers are mostly considerate, but whenever someone coughs or sneezes, everyone turns around to make sure that person sneezed into their elbow. I've even seen customers come in wearing some strange get-ups. One guy even came in with a plastic Walmart bag wrapped around his entire head, with a slit cut out for his eyes.

A lot of my coworkers have left to avoid a public-facing job during the pandemic.grocery store workers across Canada are putting their health at risk every time they come in to work, but a lot of us are still making close to minimum wage. I realize that I feel more exhausted than normal even though I'm working the same hours.

There still have been some moments of kindness in the midst of the chaos.I've overheard people talking on the phone who sounded as though they were organizing grocery deliveries for those stuck at home. And this past weekend a very nice lady thanked us for continuing to work. I know everyone is worried, but it's useless having the same scary conversations day after day. Instead tell us a funny anecdote, or about something nice. We’ll appreciate the distraction, and you’ll make our day just a bit brighter.

1. What does the author intend to show by "It was nuts." in Paragraph 2?
A.The goods were in short supply.B.The store was having a big sale.
C.The cashiers complained about their work.D.The locals rushed to do shopping like crazy.
2. What does Paragraph 3 convey about customers?
A.They prefer to shop here in costume.B.They are panicky about the disease.
C.They are more friendly to each other.D.They all protect themselves properly.
3. Which of the following best describes the author?
A.Aggressive.B.Considerate.C.Optimistic.D.Conservative.
4. What is the author 's main purpose in writing the article?
A.To present the kind moments in a time of chaos.
B.To describe what it 's like working in the pandemic.
C.To explain why it is hard to work at the grocery store.
D.To provide advice on how to protect oneself in the pandemic.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Today's test score will decide who has topped the class, so be ready,” announced Miss Natasha in the classroom.

Miss Natasha got everyone's test papers, cleared her throat to announce the results and distributed the test papers among the students. Everyone was nervous about their scores that would be announced soon.

Ali and Bob have been competitors since class one and each year either one of the two came first in the class. This year, there was tough competition between both of them, and they eagerly awaited the results.

“Peter, 18,”announced Miss Natasha as she handed him his paper,“Eric, 16, Ali, 20, Bob, 19 ... and lastly Alia, 15.”

When Miss Natasha had distributed the test papers in class, everyone found out that Ali beat Bob by one mark and topped the class. Everyone congratulated him and Ali was happy as he accepted everyone's congratulations.

As Ali was about to put his paper in his bag, he noticed that by mistake Miss Natasha had given him two marks for an incorrect answer. He was shocked. He rechecked his answers and realized that all his answers were correct except for that one. Now if he informed Miss Natasha about it, he would not only lose two marks but also his first position.

Considering the situation, he remained quiet and went home. But all day he kept thinking about it. Should he or shouldn't he tell Miss Natasha about it? He thought that it had been already done, and no one would notice if he didn't tell anyone, but then another thought crossed his mind. If he didn't tell the teacher about it and stayed the position-holder in class, he wouldn't rightfully take the position as it clearly belonged to Bob.

This situation put Ali in a hard position. His parents always taught him to do the right thing, but doing the right thing here meant he would lose his first position. He remembered how everyone cheered for him and congratulated him in class.

7 . Wind turbines (涡轮) and solar panels that generate electricity are examples of “green” technology. A new study finds that such renewable energy might be green in another sense. Large collections of those turbines or solar panels appear capable of bringing rains to the desert and would allow more plants to grow.

Building large wind or solar farms just to study their question was not an option. It would be too costly. So experts Kalnay and Safa developed a model of North Africa’s Sahara Desert to find out how wind turbines and solar farms might alter the desert’s climate.

The team ran its model several times. In one run, it assumed that people would set up wind farms only. Another run assumed people would install just solar farms. A third assumed people would build both. They would affect the desert’s weather with temperature and average daily rain increased—but differently. Installing a mix of solar farms and wind turbines brought about a bigger change—not in temperature but in rainfall. In the Sahara, having both wind and solar farms more than doubled the amount of rain that fell, up to 215.4 millimeters per day.

The models predicted that the average rainfall would increase over time, as more plants grew. Plants move water from the ground to the air. Warmer air can carry more water. So as this air rises, it can ferry more water up to become clouds. Those clouds can release rain, relieving the thirst of plants below. Over time, this process repeats itself over and over. This positive feedback can greatly boost rains.

Such rainfall changes could lead to better agriculture, says Safa. “More rain also would help wild plants grow. We believe that the countries in the Sahara should seriously consider investing in wind and solar power”, he added.

1. What is the new finding of the research?
A.Deserts will be suitable for farming.
B.It costs much to get deserts greener.
C.Renewable energy can green a desert.
D.Clean energy helps plants grow better.
2. What discouraged experts from building energy farms?
A.High construction expenses.
B.A lack of suitable test sites.
C.Shortage of manpower.
D.Terrible climate.
3. What was the advantage of the third run?
A.Saving more energy with less cost.
B.Doubling global rainfall per year.
C.Raising daily rainfall in the desert.
D.Decreasing temperature in the desert.
4. What may Safa advise the countries in the Sahara to do?
A.Build more farms to grow crops.
B.Save more water for agriculture.
C.Invest in wind and solar power.
D.Consider moving to other places.

8 . Humans are no strangers to widespread viruses, and each time a vaccine(疫苗)is developed, it gives us hope for the future. Now, the world is waiting for a vaccine to fight COVID-19.

Scientists worldwide have been rolling up their sleeves to work toward an effective novel coronavirus vaccine.

Under the coordination(协调)of the World Health Organization (WHO),up to 172 countries have been engaging with the "largest and most diverse COVID-19 vaccine portfolio",a plan known as the COVAX Global Vaccines Facility.

COVAX is a system for joint purchasing and balancing the risks of multiple vaccines. When a vaccine proves to be safe and effective, all countries within the facility will be able to access it, according to Xinhua.

The plan is aimed to ensure that all countries, no matter their economic status, can get the vaccine in a timely manner when one is available. It also makes sure that prices will be kept as low as possible.

"A number of vaccines are now in the final stage of clinical trials," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Aug 24,adding that the goal of COVAX is to deliver at least 2 billion doses of a vaccine by the end of 2021.

According to the WHO, at present, nine potential vaccines are part of the portfolio.

To guarantee the equal access and fair assignment of COVID-19 vaccines, the WHO has said that the world needs to prevent vaccine nationalism-countries putting their own interests ahead of others in trying to secure supplies of a possible vaccine.

"Vaccine nationalism only helps the virus,"Tedros said, warning that it would lead to a prolonged pandemic(疫情) if only a small number of countries got most of the supply.

"Like an orchestra,we need all instruments to be played in harmony to create music that everyone enjoys," he said.

Vaccine development looks promising,as several countries have made great progress. Russia began production of its first batch of a COVID-19 vaccine on Aug 15, according to its health ministry. It's the world's first registered vaccine. Four Chinese vaccine candidates have started international stage-3 clinical trials.

D.Scientist have produced 2 billion doses of vaccines.
2. What's the author's attitude towards vaccine nationalism?
A.Supportive.
B.Critical.
C.Optimistic.
D.Sympathetic.
3. Tedros compared fighting COVID-19 to an orchestra to________.
A.show his deep love for music

9 . The end of the school year was in sight and spirits were high. I was back teaching after an absence of 15 years, dealing with the various kinds of "forbidden fruit" that come out of book bags. Now was the spring of the water pistol.

I decided to think up a method of dealing with forbidden fruit.

"Please bring that pistol to me," I said. "I'm going to put it in my Grandma's Box."

"What's that?" they asked.

"It's a large wooden chest full of toys for my grandchildren," I replied,

"You don't have grandchildren," someone said.

"I don't now." I replied. "But someday I will. When I do, my box will be full of wonderful things for them."

My imaginary Grandma's Box worked like magic that spring, and later. Sometimes. students would ask me to describe all the things I had in it. Then I would try to remember the different possessions I supposedly had taken away—since I seldom actually kept them. Usually the offender would appear at the end of the day, and I would return the belonging.

The-years went by, and my first grandchild Gordon was born. I shared my joy with that year's class. Then someone said, "Now you can use your Grandma's Box." From then on instead of coming to ask their possessions back, the students would say, "That's okay. Put it in your Grandma's Box for Gordon."

I loved talking about the imaginary box, not only with my students but also with my own children. They enjoyed hearing about all the forbidden fruit I had collected. Then one Christmas I received a surprise gift—a large, beautifully made wooden chest. My son Bruce had made my Grandma's Box a reality.

10 . Like people, plants experience stress. And also, like people, the response to that stress can determine success.

Bad environmental conditions, such as drought, flood, heat and other stresses, affect yields(产量) more than crop pests and diseases.”We are trying to find a way to equip plants with the ability to tolerate environmental stress and maintain high yields”,said Stephen Howell,a professor of genetics and cell biology.

Plant cells produce proteins(蛋白质) and ship them to different parts of the cell.Under normal conditions, these proteins are folded into their normal, healthy structures as they are produced. When a plant is under stress, its cells produce poorly folded or unfolded proteins. Then a built-in system senses this and sets off an alarm in the cell said Howell.

In response to the alarm, another protein (IRE1) starts working and creates a different process which activates(激活)the stress response genes whose products bring about defensive measures that help the plant survive.

“As it turns out, responses that are activated under stressful conditions actually inhibit the growth of plants,”said Howell.”This allows them to preserve their energy to survive the stressful conditions.”

“For plants in the wild, this response is a help for survival”,he said.In production of agricultural crops, however, this response reduces yields.

“You don’t want crop plants to stop growing,Howell said.”You want them to continue to grow and produce more even though they are under stress.”

“With the new understanding of this stress response, the next step may be to silence the alarm system”,said Howell.”What may be important is to disable some of these stress responses. That may make the plant more productive under stressful conditions.

1. According to the text,an alarm in the plant cell is caused by _____.
A.the folded proteinsB.the changed proteins
C.the defensive measuresD.the stress response genes
2. The energy preserved in the plants under stressful conditions _____.
A.helps the plants to survive
B.helps to maintain high yields
C.keeps the plants growing
D.helps to produce proteins
3. The underlined word “inhibit” in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by “_____”.
A.preventB.startC.continueD.promote
4. How does Howell intend to make crop plants maintain high yields under stressful conditions?
A.By making crop plants keep more energy.
B.By making crop plants stop growing.
C.By making the alarm system stop working.
D.By making the alarm system respond quickly.
