5 . Ross Salvo, a 12-year-old boy from Newtown, CT, was very special, in the way he lived, served, cared about others and overcame challenges.
Born with serious health issues, Ross survived his first days of life, but the health problems continued. Shortly after birth, Ross had a brain injury. By the time Ross was two months old, he had already had one heart surgery and three brain surgeries. Despite many challenges, Ross made it through those early days. As one doctor said, “There is no reason for him to be alive right now, but he is still alive!”
But none of these stopped Ross from becoming the best version of himself and making a big impact on the people around him. The key was his amazing attitude, faith and spirit. His family never said “things Ross wanted to do”.
Ross wanted to be like everyone else. Where others saw differences ,he saw things they had in common. As he once said to a kid who was mean to him, “So I have crutches (拐杖). What’s the difference?” His family said he did not have a disability, but “different” ability.
Ross was willing to try anything! And he did! He played soccer and basketball. He was an active member the youth group at St. Rose of Lima church. He enjoyed serving others. His parents were both Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). Ross trained to an EMT and helped his parents train others in CPR as a volunteer training assistant. Ross was also a great friend to many, genuinely cared about others and always tried to spread his great attitude to those around him. When people were struggling, he would encourage them.
Ross’s teacher, Amy, said, “Ross had his challenges, but he never complained whenever there were difficulties. I am a better teacher because I had the privilege (优惠待遇) of having him teach me.”

Nothing has come easy for Chris who faced many challenges in his childhood. His father, Nick, said that his son suffered from illnesses most of his life. Chris was born with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) and underwent many major surgeries. All through his illnesses, the little boy always had a strong will.
“When you have children with Down syndrome, they don't fit in, they are different and they don't get invited to parties. They don't get invited to anything. Everything you do is a challenge, it is a fight. It is a battle to just get them to be included,” Nick said.
Despite his life challenges, Chris tries hard to stay positive and work hard to overcome his difficulties. “Don't tell me that I'll fail,” the young man replies to those who tell him he can't do something.
Chris has always been athletic, so his father found a Special Olympics Marathon Triathlon program for him to participate in. His father viewed the program as a fun thing they could do together. He encouraged Chris to do something that no one had ever done before. He knew accomplishing a challenging event such as the Ironman Triathlon would make an incredibly powerful impact, not only on his son but on many others with disabilities. He asked Chris if he would be interested in participating in the most challenging race. “Yes, let's do it!” Chris enthusiastically replied.
Individuals with Down syndrome, like Chris, often struggle with poor balance and delayed reaction time. Therefore, it took him a little longer to complete training routines in the beginning. However, Chris is no quitter, he kept on practicing. With his courage, willpower and his family's encouragement, every day he grew better, faster and stronger.

10 . Range anxiety, the fear of running out of power before being able to recharge an electric vehicle, may be a thing of the past, according to a team of Penn State engineers who are looking at lithium iron phosphate batteries (磷酸铁锂电池) that have a range of 250 miles with the ability to charge in 10 minutes.
“We developed a pretty clever battery for mass-market electric vehicles,” said Chao-Yang Wang, a professor and director of the Electrochemical Engine Center at Penn State. “There is no more range anxiety and this battery is affordable.” The researchers also say that the battery should be good for 2 million miles in its lifetime.
They report today in Nature Energy that the key to long-life and rapid recharging is the battery’s ability to quickly heat up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, for charge and discharge, and then cool down when the battery is not working.
The battery uses a self-heating approach previously developed in Wang’s center. The self-heating battery uses a thin nickel foil (镍箔) with one end attached to the negative terminal and the other extending outside the cell to create a third terminal. Once electrons flow, it rapidly heats up the nickel foil through resistance heating and warms the inside of the battery. Once the battery’s inner temperature is 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the switch opens and the battery is ready for rapid charge or discharge.
“This battery has reduced weight, volume and cost,” said Wang. “I am very happy that we finally found a battery that will benefit the mainstream consumer mass market.”
According to Wang, these smaller batteries can produce a large amount of power upon heating — 40 kilowatt hours and 300 kilowatts of power. An electric vehicle with this battery could go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3 seconds and would drive like a Porsche, he said. “This is how we are going to change the environment and not contribute to just the expensive cars,” said Wang. “Let everyone afford electric vehicles.”
1. Which of the following shows the range anxiety?A.Fearing that the battery can’t be recharged. |
