Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.

When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new.
Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people? Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time? Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble?
Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation-Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to do in reality.
Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.
Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t really believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.
But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot.

Yours,
Li Hua
I lived with my mom and grandmother since I was 8 years old. Running a big grocery store in our town, my mom was very busy and seldom had time to take care of me. Every day I was left inside the house with my grandmother who was too old to take me out to play. I always thought that my mom cared more about her business than me.
One sunny afternoon, two of my closest friends, Jason and David, called me to go biking at the park. My grandmother was sleeping in her bedroom. I thought it was my chance. So I climbed over our gate and got out. Jason lent me his bike and sat at the back seat of David’s bike. Then the three of us went together to the park, which was not far away from our home, to enjoy ourselves. I was riding the bike as fast as I could around the park. And I felt as if I were flying!
Suddenly out of nowhere, a little boy appeared in front of me.
Through this experience, I realized accidents may happen any time and that mother is always the one who loves me best.
A.My leg hurt a lot and I saw some blood on my trousers. |
B.Jason was shocked and he immediately rushed to the grocery store to tell my mom. |
C.Knowing that I was not seriously hurt, my mom kept me at home for a month as a punishment. |
D.To avoid him, I made a sudden turn, knocked onto a tree and fell over. |
E.Soon my mom came and drove me to the nearest hospital. |
F.To my surprise, instead of getting mad at me, she said sorry for not taking good care of me, which made me deeply regretful. |
