The annual English Festival, which was lasted one week, has just ended. There were all kinds of colorful activities, included an English speech competition. Last Friday, we had an honor of inviting Professor Smith to deliver a lecture on English cultural background information, such as English idiom. He was very learned and humorous that he began his lecture with an amusing story to attract the attention of the audience and all of us was deeply impressed with his wisdom. We admired him and took notes carefully, for he made himself understood with speaking slowly and clearly enough for us to follow her. He gave us some practically ways to develop the sense of language and encouraged us to keep speaking English as much possible in our daily life.

Most important, she has a great sense of responsibility, always knowing how it takes to be a good helper of others. I am sure you will find your work much easy with her help.

Yours,

9 . For a language learner, taking part in a public speech is one of the best ways to improve your speaking skills.     1    . If you can avoid them in your speech, you will make great progress.

The use of “I feel”, “I think”, and “maybe”

In many public speeches, the speakers tend to use some uncertain expressions like “I feel”, “I guess”, “maybe” and “perhaps”.     2    . Therefore, instead of the empty sounding “I guess”, using facts, together with a clear conclusion based on those facts is far more likely to be popular with an audience.

    3

Don’t stick to the same tone. It can be boring. Try to mix it up. For example, when they spoke about their dreams, some sounded romantic. Others used humor. Very few used several different styles together. Try mixing more than one style, rather than just sticking with the same one.

Irresponsible answers

Public speaking is different from personal conversations. You are responsible for your words. Even though you want to answer quickly, you don’t want to sound foolish.     4    .

Talking around the topic rather than directly answering it

5    . The key is to work out what question is being asked. Use one or two arguments together and give a strong conclusion. Remember that judges are not judging you on whether they agree, but on your ability to say what you think clearly.

A.Using only one speaking style
B.Improving your communication skill
C.Here are some good suggestions for you
D.So you should think twice before you talk
E.You should focus on one point and give a clear solution
F.However, there are some common problems in question-and-answer session
G.These words show that the person is only speaking from his or her point of view

10 . Banksy is a world-famous artist, but no one knows exactly who Banksy is—or even if Banksy is male or female. That’s because Banksy is a “street artist.” Most of the art Banksy creates is painted on the sides of buildings, public walls and other places that are out in the open. And the art is created without anyone seeing them being created. So Banksy has remained anonymous.

Banksy’s art is “political.” That means it’s not just interesting to look at, but it makes a point about something. One of Banksy’s most famous paintings is called Girl with Balloon, which shows a young girl painted in black and white reaching out towards a bright red, heart-shaped balloon dangling from a string. It was painted in 2002 on a wall in the UK. Recently, a framed copy of Girl with Balloon was auctioned off (拍卖) for nearly two million dollars.

The painting was on the wall at the auction house, known as Sotheby’s, and suddenly something very surprising happened. The painting started to drop down in its frame and was shredded (切碎) by some blades hidden in the bottom of the frame. The painting started getting cut into pieces. And what is even more astonishing was that it was Banksy who destroyed the painting.

Shortly after the auction, Banksy posted a video on Instagram showing how the shredder was put into the frame-on purpose- “in case it was ever put up for auction,” according to the video.

No one knows exactly why Banksy did it, but on Instagram Banksy put a quote from another famous painter, Picasso, that said, “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge.” Some people from Sotheby’s grabbed the painting when they saw what was happening, and stopped the shredding about half-way through.

The new owner of the painting was at first shocked but them realized the painting is now even more interesting. The painting has now been renamed “Love Is in the Bin,” and it may even be more valuable than ever.

1. Which of the following best explains “anonymous” in Paragraph 1?
A.Unknown.B.Unreliable.
C.Unacceptable.D.Disrespectful.
2. What happened to the painting during the auction?
A.It was completely destroyed by Banksy.
B.It dropped from the wall and broke into pieces.
C.Some people from Sotheby’s put it into a shredder.
D.Some blades in the frame was cutting the painting into pieces.
3. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.
A.The painting was repaired and given a new name.
B.The painting is worth even more than two million dollars now.
C.The new owner of the painting was upset about what happened.
D.The new owner of the painting thought what Banksy did was interesting.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Mysterious Painter.
B.The Urge To Destroy is Also A Creative Urge.
C.Girl With Balloon, An Amazing Work of Art.
D.Million-Dollar Banksy Painting Shreds Itself.
