文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。人类是非常社会化的生物,除了言语交流,肢体语言在面对面的交流中也很重要;如今信息社会中,随着我们交流方式的改变,数字肢体语言和表情符号正变得越来越重要。

2 . Humans are very social creatures. In addition to verbal (语言的) communication, we also use our bodies to help us better express our thoughts and feelings. This non-verbal communication is known as body language.

Body language includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture (姿势). It actually developed as a form of communication before humans could speak or write. We can tell a lot about what a person is thinking or feeling just by looking at them.

In fact, body language is so common that you may not even realize that you are communicating many messages to others every day without even using words. For example, you might move your head from side to side to express the word “no” instead of actually saying the word. Or, you might give a “thumbs (拇指) up” to show that you like or agree with something.

But now that we are spending more time online, we may not have as many in-person interactions as before. Because of this, our means of non-verbal communication has changed, but is still an important way to express our thoughts.

Our “digital body language” is becoming increasingly important as we change how we communicate. Instead of using voice messages, we can video chat with our friends to show them our smiling face. Another way to express our emotions digitally is through emojis (表情符号). When we are communicating online, we are only revealing the content and leaving out tones and facial expressions. That’s when emojis can help in communication.

Whether using video chat to show our expression or sending an emoji, don’t forget the importance of digital body language and non-verbal communication.

1. What does the author mean by saying “Humans are very social creatures”?
A.Humans like living in groups.B.Humans need to communicate.
C.Humans depend on each other.D.Humans differ from other beings.
2. Why are the two examples mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To explain how to express no.B.To prove how much one likes something.
C.To demonstrate how to communicate messages.D.To show how much we underestimate body language.
3. What makes digital body language more and more important?
A.The way of communication.B.The voice messages we use.
C.The time we spend online.D.The invention of emojis.
4. How can emojis help in communication?
A.By revealing the content.B.By helping us video chat.
C.By expressing our emotions.D.By leaving out facial expressions.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了微型画画家Nick Orr。

4 . The beauty of a single pheasant’s feather (野鸡羽毛) caught Nick Orr’s eye — and inspired him to produce something unique.

The art of the miniaturist (微型画画家) invites us to look at the familiar in a new way by reimagining it on a different scale.

This extraordinary inversion of the beauty of birds in flight expressed microscopically (微观地) through sculpting a sole flight feather came about by chance. Orr explains: “One day my daughter asked for some pheasant’s feathers. It made me look at them and see how beautiful they were and I thought what a waste not to create something with them.”

Having had his 10% of inspiration, Orr now had to go through 90% of perspiration (汗水) to find a way to work with feathers. Orr said “I played around with various ideas and nothing really worked, and I was holding a bunch and started cutting them to shape and to my surprise they didn’t fall apart.”

“It is as difficult to design the feather as it is to cut it out. The feather is my canvas and it is such a small canvas to work on-less than 3cm — and a very particular shape. Everything I depict must fit into that.”

“I see birds so differently now. Now I see the feathers first and then see the bird. I will think about how I can recreate it on a feather.”

Each individual feather is treated differently, with the feather itself playing a major part in the design of the eventual image.” Once I have an idea for a picture, I will start to sketch an overall outline on paper, at the same time as thinking about how it will fit a particular feather. I love the idea that I take a feather from a bird that most people think of as the ugliest on the planet and tun it into something beautiful.”

And that’s at the heart of Orr’s work — to make us see what we normally miss.

1. How did Orr begin to work on his feather art works?
A.His whole family attempted to perfect a feather.
B.His daughter was crazy about the beautiful feathers.
C.He accidentally discovered the beauty of the feathers.
D.He always thought these feathers perfect medium.
2. What does Orr think of the work with feathers?
A.He believes inspiration and perspiration are of the same importance.
B.He thinks it of the same difficulty to design the feather as to shape it.
C.He finds it too difficult to cut a bunch of feather into different shapes.
D.He imagines the familiar single feather in the same way as people do.
3. Which of the following can best describe Orr?
A.Imaginative & persistent.B.Generous & skilled.
C.Talented & caring.D.Curious & hardworking.
4. What’s the heart of Orr’s work?
A.He can see what we normally miss on the planet.
B.He can see the feathers first and then see the bird.
C.He can turn the ugliest bird into something beautiful.
D.He can turn different feathers into different art works.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了为了减少温室气体排放,荷兰的一座城市禁止在公共场所发布肉类广告。

6 . A city in Netherlands will become the first in the world to ban meat advertisements from public spaces in an effort to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The ban also covers holiday flights, fossil fuels and cars that run on fossil fuels. The ban is delayed until 2024 due to existing contracts with companies that sell the products.

Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000, will bring the ban into effect from 2024 after meat was added to a list of products deemed to contribute to the climate crisis. Advertisements will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting complaints from the meat sector that the government is “going too far in telling people what’s best for them”.

Recent studies suggest global food production is responsible for one-third of all planet-heating emissions, with the use of animals for meat accounting for twice the pollution of producing plant-based foods. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are cut down for the food of animals while fertilisers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen (氮), which can contribute to air pollution, water pollution and climate change. Livestock also produces large quantities of methane (甲烷), a powerful greenhouse gas.

Zlggy Klazes, a councillor from the GroenLinks party, said she had not known the city would be the world’s first to enforce such a policy when she proposed it. She told the Haarlem105 radio channel: “We are not about what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen; if people want to continue eating meat, it’s fine. We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and meanwhile, encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause. Of course, there are a lot of people who find the decision shocking and unreasonable, but there are also a lot of people who think it’s fine.”

1. What does the meat sector think of the ban?
A.Neutral.B.Disapproving.
C.Indifferent.D.Positive.
2. What do recent studies show?
A.Meat consumption causes more pollution.
B.Methane mainly comes from livestock.
C.Nitrogen is harmful to the environment.
D.People cut down trees for human habitation.
3. What message do Ziggy Klazes’s words convey?
A.She is the first to ban meat advertisement.
B.She emphasizes the advantage of eating meat.
C.She is in favor of banning meat advertising.
D.She cares about what people cook in the kitchen.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Fossil fuels are banned in Dutch city.
B.A city in Netherlands decreases meat production.
C.Greenhouse gas emissions are limited in Dutch city.
D.A city in Netherlands bans meat advertisements in public.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要以9岁的自闭症患者Matthew为例,介绍了一个自闭症儿童项目,其主要目的是帮助自闭症患者适应空中旅行。

8 . The captain hadn’t even turned off the “fasten your seat belt” light and Matthew Bahani was already having a rough time.

Matthew, a 9-year-old with autism(自闭症), was growing increasingly anxious even as his parents hugged and kissed him.

“He gets nervous and he can’t control himself. He gets loud. He makes noise. It isn’t easy,” said his father, Sam Bahani, 48. “You can’t imagine what he goes through. He can’t express himself.”

The Bahanis were among the ten families who participated in a program at Newark Liberty International Airport intended to help familiarize autistic children with air travel — a confusing, complex process that, with loud noises, uniformed screening agents and lines of passengers they don’t know, can be frightening to them.

The “Autism Explores” program — which takes participants through all aspects of the flying experience without leaving the ground — also helps parents, who often find themselves in the position of dealing with a difficult child, as well as with scare from other adults who may have no idea of the child’s particular difficulty.

“When you’re in a public situation and that happens, people are not always kind,” said Matthew’s mother, Jennifer Bahani, 42, who avoids even the shopping mall with Matthew.

Each aspect of the program, from check-in to baggage claim, related to the flying experience, except for the actual flying. While the pilot and other flight crew made the usual announcements about flying conditions or the weather on the ground, the plane never actually pulled back from the gate.

“It’s a beautiful day for flying. Sit back and enjoy the flight,” announced the pilot, Geoff Bender, whose 13-year-old daughter, Teresa, is also autistic.

“Normalizing activities like flying for children with autism is important in making sure they will lead as full and independent a life as possible,” he said.
