文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了珍妮和史蒂文夫妇在相处的五十年间因为爱和理解一直陪伴在彼此身边的故事。

1 . Jenny married Steven in 1950. They loved each other but Steven had bad tempers. As a new bride(新娘), Jenny moved into Steven’s house on his farm. She took a shoe box with her and put it in her closet (壁橱). She asked Steven not to open the box. Thinking that everyone has his/her secret that he/she never wanted others to know, Steven accepted it.

For 50 years, Steven left the box alone, even without touching it. Finally, Jenny was ill and dying. Steven thought the box must hold something very important and it was time to open it, so he asked Jenny whether he could open the box. Jenny said yes.

Opening the box, Steven found two doilies(装饰小垫) and $82,500. He took the things to Jenny and asked where this came from.

“Well, my mother gave me the box the day we got married,” she explained, “She said that love needed understanding, so did life. She knew you had bad tempers, so she told me to make a doily whenever I felt hurt and frustrated(沮丧), so that I wouldn’t get mad at you.” Steven was glad that in the past 50 years Jenny had made only two doilies. Then he asked about the money.

“In fact, after having made too many doilies, I began to sell them. Each brought us $50. That’s the money I’ve made by selling the doilies.”

Hearing this, Steven couldn’t help crying…

Everyone gets three presents in life. Life is the first one; love is the second and understanding is the third. It is love that gives us lives and understanding, while understanding keeps love.

As an old saying goes, “Friends are like wine, the     1     (old), the better.” Many people consider old friends to be more important than new     2     (one). For example, if two pieces of advice     3     (give) to solve a problem, one from a new friend and the other from     4     old friend, people would prefer the latter one to the former one, even though the new friend’s advice may be better. However, I disagree     5     the old saying, believing that new friends are not     6     (necessary) worse than old friends. It is not always right to determine your friendship by the length (长度) of time.

Once you call someone a friend, he must be a person who is reliable and whose interests are in common with     7     (you). It is mainly his character and interests that make him your friend. It actually has little     8     (do) with time. People’s     9     (appear) may change, but their character usually stays the same. Therefore, on this point,     10     is no difference between old friends and new friends.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.

One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.

Like the Christmas before, we didn’t send Christmas cards; we called my family in Canada. Ginny and I talked to my mom. We spoke to my uncles and aunts. I hadn’t seen any of them in seven years and Ginny hadn’t met them yet, but she hoped to one day.

Those calls were completed, but I couldn’t relax. I still had one more call to make, and I was afraid. I paced up and down inside the room. I wasted time at my computer. I needed to call but I couldn’t.

Five years ago, I received an e-mail from my brother. At that time, I had been out of work for several months. My life was very stressful. My brother’s e-mail was nothing terrible but it made me angry.

I wrote back. As I typed, my anger grew. Months of frustration (沮丧) flowed into my unkind response. I said things that were not nice, but I sent the e-mail without hesitation. More thoughts occurred to me. I wrote a second e-mail.

I screamed abuse at my brother in the emails. I didn’t care if I ever heard from him again.

The next day I received another e-mail from him. I didn’t read it. I just deleted it, and then I blocked his e-mail address.

For five years, he tried to get through to me but I ignored him. I had lived with this terrible guilt. I thought about contacting him, but was ashamed of myself for what I’d said.

It was time to fix it. I picked up the phone and stepped outside. I wanted privacy. Ginny didn’t know I was calling my brother. I took a deep breath, blew out a cloud of my breath into the cold December air, and dialed (拨号) his number. Even after five years, I still knew it by heart. A phone rang 3,700 miles away in Nova Scotia.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Hunter and Palmer ran their first 30 kilometres. Nine months earlier, neither of them could run five miles. But they had just finished something they hadn’t done before, and now they continued to complete their first marathon.

Months earlier, my wife Lisa woke up at 4: 45 a.m. to discover our older son, Hunter, had been playing the videogame since he got home from school the previous day. To break this habit, we tried several ways, like limiting the amount of time he was allowed to play each day, but couldn’t find anything that worked consistently.

I’m not a fan of video games. In the summer, my parents would lock the door behind us in the morning as we left to play street football. In the early 1990s, I was a summer camp counselor at our local church and knew that this new generation of kids was different from mine. Many of the campers played videogames on little portable(可携带的) devices, and it was hard getting their attention.

I’m not against videogames; I’m just against playing them every waking moment at the expense of exercise. Trying to ensure that our kids didn’t become one of them, I came up with an idea and acted with Lisa. Effective immediately, video-game time in our house would have to be earned, just like money. Each mile run equals 30 minutes of video-game play. The only limit to the amount of time he played was based on how far he decided.

Instead of choosing to run so he could play games, Hunter decided to boycott(抵制) the new program and instead chose to spend that time sleeping. It was still better than playing videogames.

Eventually, as the temptation(诱惑) of playing games was just too much, he decided he would give running a shot. Since the overall goal of the new program was to get him to exercise, I told him he could earn credits for his favorite football practices and games. I also added that on weekends or holidays, he would earn double time (one hour) for each mile he ran.
