1 . Four years ago, my sweet mom went to be with her Lord. She did it her way.

I got the call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception.

My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land. The place was rustic(乡村的), with no indoor plumbing or heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to me.

In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized. Her favorite song was “Moon River” and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories about how when I was a little girl, I could sing before I could talk.

As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit them every week or two. The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad. Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell all the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle(喧闹)of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced.( 叙旧)

Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio. Music always comforted me. My heart skipped a beat. “Moon River” was playing on the radio. I sat there stunned, with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note.

Then the radio announcer came on. “Here’s one we haven’t heard in a while,” and an unfamiliar song began. I began to cry harder as I heard the words sung over the airwaves.

1. The writer didn’t like staying on the farm for the following reasons EXCEPT that ______.
A.it was too cold and quiet
B.she could only sing one song on the small farm
C.there was nothing more that could make her excited
D.the place was rustic, with no indoor plumbing or heat
2. From the first paragraph, we know that the writer’s mother ______.
A.left the small farm with LordB.passed away four years ago
C.left for Lord to live her own wayD.preferred to be with Lord
3. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A.Mom’s musicB.Cherish (珍惜) life
C.My happy childhoodD.Our small farmhouse

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The young mother stared down at her son who was seriously ill. Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any other parents, she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams with ease though that might be impossible.

But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand and asked,

“Billy, have you ever thought about what you would be if you grew up? Have you ever wished what you would do with your life?"" Mommy, I always want to be a fireman when I grow up." The mother smiled back and said," Let's see if we can make your wish come true." Later that day, she went to her local fire department, where she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as the sea.

She explained her son's last wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine. Fireman Bob said," Look, we can do better than that. If you'll have your son ready at seven o clock on Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls! And if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat."

Three days later, Fireman Bob picked up Billy, dressed him in the fire uniform and took him from his hospital bed to the ladder truck. Billy got to sit on the back of the truck and help guide it back to the fire station.

They finally reached the fire department. The firemen, with all the love and attention given to him, led Billy to be a good fireman all day. And finally the little boy got the hat with the symbol of the Fire Department on it.

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling in a yellow basket.

“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.

Sara’s mother really didn’t think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.

“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.

But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara’s Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.

Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara’s parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.

The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

5 . I was a newcomer in a class. So was Alice. That's where the similarities ended. I was tall and she was small. My thick, black hair had been recently cut short. Her natural blonde hair flowed to her waist and looked great. I was awkward and shy. She wasn't. I couldn't stand her. I considered her my enemy. She liked me. She wanted to be friends.

One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to answer any other way. No one had invited me over to play. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school. I got very surprised when she led me into an apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise. I would have thought she'd outgrown them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in closet, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and we both had wild imaginations. We had a great day that afternoon. Our jaws ached from smiling so much. She showed me her wardrobe, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it used her as a model sometimes for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.

Alice had the whole neighborhood charmed. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses, and spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being tall.

Alice, my first real friend since childhood, taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: that your worst enemy can turn out to be your best friend.

10 . Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none — that’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas (画布) — the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.

Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.

Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed — All he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙) and most importantly, his lively imagination!

Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, in search of perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world’s largest freelance (自由职业的) drawing, was created in the desert sands of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away.

Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2005. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand — he is also an excellent cook and founder of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto (座右铭) is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.

1. What do we know about Denevan?
A.He used to be a cook.
B.He has a gift for creating sand art.
C.He puts his work on show regularly.
D.He showed artistic talents at a very young age.
2. What can we learn from the text?
A.Denevan walks a lot to complete his work.
B.It is not hard for Denevan to find suitable sand.
C.It takes a long time for the storm to destroy Denevan’s work.
D.Denevan is very particular about his drawing tools.
3. What does Denevan enjoy about his work according to the text?
A.Walking a long distance.B.Waiting for the storm to come.
C.Looking for a suitable canvas.D.Watching nature destroy his work.
4. Which of the following can best describe Denevan?
A.Generous.B.Open-minded.
C.Imaginative.D.Traditional.
