Outside, it was raining cats and dogs. Rose got up at 5:50 in the early morning. She got dressed in a hurry as it was Monday, when the school she taught in would hold a short but important meeting. Then she dashed into the washroom and had her teeth brushed. With everything ready, she went downstairs and waited for Jack, her husband, to get up.
After what seemed like a century, Rose got very angry and her patience ran out. She began to shout angrily, ”Can’t you get up a little earlier? Look, we’ll be late for the meeting!“ Jack, who was always arrogant and disobedient, shouted back, ”Why should I get up so early?“ Jack’s words threw Rose into great fury and she got extremely angry, shouting ”Are you a man? Why are you always so slow at everything? I hate it when I have to wait for you all the time!“
Upon finishing her words. Rose rushed out of the house, leaving her husband far behind. That’s the daily routine in the well-furnished house. Such unhappy scenes just put the couple in desperate situation, especially Rose. She just couldn’t make out why things got this bad between her and her husband. 23 years ago, they fell in love with each other while studying at college. At that time they were always greedy for more time to stay together. During those memorable days, John would always wait for her down the dormitory, holding a bunch of flowers in his hand. They would go to the theater, enjoying a movie that would always interest both of them. Now things seemed different. They often argued about small things, like who was responsible for the laundry.
Memories of the once gentle and considerate young man would come flooding back to Rose, making Rose miss the good old days and the good young man in her memory as well. Tears welling up in her eyes, Rose got into her car. She was on the point of getting mad. Disappointed with the present life. Rose spent a lifeless day in her school. She felt a desperate need to let out her stormy feeling.
After work, Rose drove her car into the heavy late afternoon traffic, alone. Despite the fact that the argument happened between her husband and her in the morning, she was still in a blue mood. The more she thought about it, the more depressed she became. So upset was Rose that tears blurred her eyes, making everything vague to her.

Marie had always dreamed of becoming a professional dancer and was preparing for a high-level dance competition which was aimed to draw excellent dancers from all over the country. It was a prestigious (负有盛名的) event, and Marie knew that if she wanted to make a name for herself in the world of ballet, this was her chance. She spent every waking moment practicing, determined to give it her all on the big day.
When the day of the competition arrived, Marie was nervous but excited. She had trained hard for this moment for years and felt confident in her well-prepared dancing. As she walked onto the stage, the bright lights blinded her momentarily, but she quickly regained her composure and began to dance.
The music swirled around her as she moved gracefully across the stage. Her movements were fluid and precise, each step perfectly executed. The audience watched in awe as Marie danced, completely lost in the moment.
But then, it happened. During a particularly difficult jump, Marie landed awkwardly on her ankle and felt a sharp pain shoot up her leg. She tried to ignore it and continue dancing, but the pain was too much. She fell to the floor, clutching her leg in agony.
Paramedics rushed onto the stage to tend to her, and Marie was taken to the hospital. The diagnosis was devastating: she had torn several ligaments (韧带) in her ankle and would need extensive surgery to repair the damage. Marie was held by desperate shock. She had worked so hard to get where she was, and now it seemed like all of her dreams were slipping away. For weeks, Marie was confined to a wheelchair, unable to move without assistance. She felt helpless and alone, wondering if she would ever be able to dance again.

8 . Children will become more and more independent and will do what they would like to do. However, as parents, you ought to take care of your own children and have a better understanding of them in the following cases.
School work becomes increasingly difficult as children grow up. So this is a time when some kids begin to do better in their school work while others struggle to understand more advanced and more difficult lessons. When they get home, talk with them about their school lessons and find out what they don’t understand. It’s a chance for you to stay close with your children as before and get them to relax.
For many families, homework can be a serious struggle. Many school-age kids are reluctant to sit down and study for a spelling test or complete their math homework. It’s natural for them to be bored with their homework, but you have to think of ways to help them form the right habit to finish their homework when they get home.
Many kids are busy with sports, music, and after-school activities. Others, however, may prefer to spend too many hours on the screen. It’s important to keep kids active at this age.
Friends become a bigger deal for children during this time too. Attending birthday parties or playing with kids on the playground can be good for their development.
Bullying (恃强凌弱的行为) can become a problem around this age. It’s important to talk to your child about kindness and respect so he doesn’t become a bully and it’s also quite necessary for you to talk about what he can do if he becomes a target.

“Hurry up you guys, or you will be late for school!” called Mom. We went downstairs and had a quick breakfast. I was eating my favorite — very sweet porridge, and Sara was. having eggs. When I rose to have my bowl washed, Mom whispered, “You know you need to be cautious today when you’re walking Sara to school. It’s your job to assure (保证) me she gets there all right.” Then she cast me. a very serious look. I thought to myself, wondering why Mom was making such a big deal out of this. It was Sara’s first day of Kindergarten, but I could manage it. I wish Mom would treat me like an adult.
Then Sara ran out of the house, and I went behind her, skipping down the front walkway to the sidewalk. Along the way, I could feel Mom’s gaze on us.
I grabbed Sara’s hand. “Are you eager and excited for your first day of school?” I asked, trying to sound like a grown-up. Sara smiled and nodded her head yes. Meanwhile, my mom was staring at us through the window. “When will she treat me like an adult?” I thought. “I will show you the way.” I said. I felt proud to be the elder sister. We walked past beautiful gardens and big, leafy trees. Suddenly, I heard a growl (低吼) and saw a dog walking towards us. He was big and fierce looking with long sharp teeth. “GRRRR!!!” the dog barked. I didn’t see its owner or anyone who could help us. My hand became sweaty and Sara stopped walking. “I’m scared, Julie,” she said. I didn’t want her to be scared. I wanted to appear brave. “Everything will be okay,” I said.
“GRRRR!!!” The dog stepped closer and we could see it was the size of a small horse — with red eyes and sharp teeth.
