文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了我们日常生活中的食物浪费现象以及华盛顿DC中央厨房的首席执行官科廷为解决食物浪费而采取的努力。

1 . Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. The arugula (芝麻菜)was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.

In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away — from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.

Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”

If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time — but for him, it's more like 12 bones of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished (有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.

Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat,” Curtin says.

1. What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?
A.We pay little attention to food waste.B.We waste food unintentionally at times.
C.We waste more vegetables than meat.D.We have good reasons for wasting food.
2. What is a consequence of food waste according to the test?
A.Moral decline.B.Environmental harm.
C.Energy shortage.D.Worldwide starvation.
3. What does Curtin’s company do?
A.It produces kitchen equipment.B.It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.
C.It helps local farmers grow fruits.D.It makes meals out of unwanted food.
4. What does Curtin suggest people do?
A.Buy only what is needed.B.Reduce food consumption.
C.Go shopping once a week.D.Eat in restaurants less often.

2 . New technology is making it possible for people to make videos of people appearing to say things they never actually said. The videos are known as “deepfakes”.

The word “deepfake” is a combination of “deep learning”(an important part of artificial intelligence) and “fake” (not real). Deepfake software allows people to replace part of a video with another video image. The result is a fake video.

The software allows you to put your face over the face of a talking president or movie star. This process will make your face speak in the voice of that president or movie star. Many people are worried the technology will be used to trick voters. Lawmakers, intelligence officials and media experts have expressed concern about deepfakes. They warn the false videos could be used to threaten America’s national security.

“We have entered a new world where it is going to be difficult to know how to believe what we see,” said Hany Farid, a researcher at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He added, “the opposite result is also worrying. People will become so used to seeing false videos that they will be more likely to doubt a real video. ”

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA) is already working to develop technologies to identify fake images and videos. But Senator Rubio says, now the identification is difficult and takes a very long time.

“It takes advanced technology to be able to show that it’s not real. And by the time that’s done, it’s been widely used.”

Rubio and other lawmakers say people will need to take more responsibility to identify fakes.

1. What is “deepfake” software used to do?
A.Kill some virus.B.Make fake videos.
C.Make excellent movies.D.Benefit stars and leaders.
2. Why was Hany Farid worried?
A.False videos might mislead people.
B.It was too difficult to use the software.
C.Private information might be given away.
D.Some people might be addicted to “deepfakes”.
3. What can we know from Rubio’s words?
A.It is really difficult to identify fake videos.
B.The technology “deepfake” has been banned.
C.The government is responsible for identification.
D.National security is being threatened by “deepfake”.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Ways to identify fake videos.
B.People’s different views on “deepfake”.
C.A new technology with a bright future.
D.A worrying new technology “deepfake”.

The rapid develop of the Internet in China has brought us greatly convenience in our daily life and work. We can get whichever we need online. But I do not agree on this opinion, because sometimes I found many students playing the computer games, which makes them fall behind in study. In my opinion, the Internet should be a good tool for us communicate with others rather than an invention for a fun. What’s more, it will do harm to us if we spend too much time look at a computer. In summary, I hope every student value this great invention but makes good use of it.

4 . Coca-Cola, which reportedly produced more than 3 million tons of plastic packaging in 2017, announced Thursday it wants to “help fix the world’s plastic waste problem one community at a time.”

The soda giant is doing so by providing $ 5.4 million for recycling programs in cities like Atlanta, Boston, Denver and Houston. In these cities, partners, like the Green Blue Institute and the Recycling Partnership, which receive the money, will work together to improve recycling rates.

“We focus on areas where we have the ability to make the biggest influence on communities through the funding and expert skills of Coca-Cola employees,” Carlos Pagoagoa, Coca-Cola’s group director of community partnerships, said in a statement. “In each city, local partners will work together to identify barriers to recycling on a local level and test a range of solutions,” he added. “We hope the learnings from these ‘model markets’ can offer solutions to other cities facing similar challenges.”

As part of the effort, the Recycling Partnership and the city of Atlanta, where the cola company’s headquarters are based, will send street teams out to open recycling carts and leave citizens cards informing them what they can and can’t recycle, and let them know how their efforts work.

“Two of the most urgent problems with recycling in the U.S. today are lack of access, followed by pollution in recycling,” Keefe Harrison, CEO of the Recycling Partnership, said in a statement. “We know from the success of Atlanta in 2017 that the citizens want to recycle, and that communicating with them in the street works.”

Last year, Coca-Cola announced its task to collect and reuse a bottle or can for each one it sells, and increase the amount of its products out of recycled materials to 50% by 2030. The brand also aims to make all its packaging fully recyclable by 2025.

5 . The English language is changing, and you are responsible! Whether we consider changes in grammar, spelling, pronunciation, or the very vocabulary of the language, you have played your part and continue to do so.

When we first learned basic grammar and spelling, perhaps in elementary school, we might have gotten the impression that these things were sacred. The rules that apply to such things might have been presented as unchanging and unchangeable. While this way might be helpful for teaching children, it is far from accurate.

The English language, like many others, is a living, growing, ever-evolving thing. Like it or not, you are involved in this change. These changes take many forms. Grammar and spelling have changed greatly over the years and centuries, with the spelling differences in different countries today a reflection of this. While the language of a thousand years ago might be called English, most of us would hardly recognize it today as the same language.

The first involves changes in the pronunciation of words. Many are familiar with the differences between the British and American ways of pronouncing certain words. In addition to these differences, the pronunciation of many words has changed over the years because of how you have decided to pronounce them. For example, consider the word "err." The traditional pronunciation of this word rhymes with the word "her." Older dictionaries show this to be the primary or only pronunciation. However, in recent years, more and more people have been pronouncing it so that it sounds like "air." Another change in the language involves the addition and removal of words. The makers of dictionaries decide which words deserve to be officially adopted as part of the English language. Through the centuries, many words have come from other languages. In fact, English has probably done this more than any other language in the world, which is why spelling and pronunciation rules for English have so many exceptions.

Of course, many slang words have been just short-lived fashions that have died out quickly. Others, though, have been adopted by mainstream society and become respectable, as have many technical terms. So then remember, the next time you repeat the newest expression to hit the street, or make up your own words, you may be contributing to the future of the English language.

1. When we begin to learn English, we think _________.
A.it is interesting to pick up a new languageB.English rules are wrongly presented in fact
C.grammar and spelling rules are unchangeableD.only adults have the ability to affect a language
2. From paragraph 3 we can know that_________.
A.we can change the English language
B.many languages are changing over years
C.English has changed little in the past 1,000 years
D.there were main changes in grammar and pronunciation
3. Why is the pronunciation of words changing?
A.people speak in different waysB.people have adopted foreign words
C.it has been affected by American EnglishD.makers of dictionaries often change them
4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Foreign words involved in English.B.The British speaks differently from Americans.
C.English language is changing over years.D.You can change the English language.

6 . The food delivery industry now is a hotly competitive business, attracting the world's biggest moneybags such as Amazon, Alibaba and Soft-Bank. Balancing the needs of diners, cooks and couriers(快递员)is complicated. Most new companies lose money. Yet they have received more than $30bn from venture capitalists (投资家)in the past five years. And they are likely to get more.

The food-delivery business can be divided into two camps: mostly profitable veterans(老牌公司)and loss-making newcomers. The veterans, founded at the start of the century, are led by publicly traded Grubhub in America, and Just Eat and Takeaway in Europe. They account for the largest share of the market, offering customers online access to restaurants. Their relatively simple business model, in which they take a cut of the bill from the restaurants, has enabled Grubhub and Just Eat to turn a profit for years. Takeaway makes money in its home market of the Netherlands.

The newbies, born more recently, have turned a once-tidy business into a food fight. For most of them, delivery is their core business, so they share their cut of the bill with riders as well as restaurants. This substantially broadens the market to restaurants but profit suffers.

The only mouthwatering aspect of the delivery business is its potential size. According to Bernstein, a brokerage(经济公司),almost a third of the global restaurant industry is made up of home delivery, takeaway and drive-throughs, which could be worth $l tm by 2023. In 2019 delivery amounted to $161bn, leaving plenty of room for online firms to expand.

Yet it is by no means clear if anyone can make money by delivering meals. In fact, the economics may be even worse. Delivery businesses have ways to cut their losses. One is to diversify further, by delivering groceries, flowers, booze, and even people, as well as meals. Another is to provide cheaper meals by centrally supplying ingredients to restaurants. In the dog — eat — dog world of food delivery, it will still be hard.

1. How can the veterans make a profit?
A.They get lots of support from capitalists.
B.They offer customers great convenience.
C.They draw a part of profit from restaurants.
D.They balance the complicated needs successfully.
2. What makes the delivery business attractive?
A.Massive profits.B.Development prospect.
C.Satisfying service.D.Efficient management.
3. What is the author's attitude towards making money by delivering meals?
A.Positive.B.Definite.C.Uncertain.D.Confident.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Delivery businesses balance some complicated needs.
B.Meal delivery attracts the world's biggest moneybags.
C.The two camps of delivery businesses compete fiercely.
D.The food-delivery business is anything but a tasty business.

7 . Many of us eat purely to satisfy our appetite for delicious food. But due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP), many Chinese people are changing their eating habits.

Due to busy work schedules, ordering simple and quick meals online used to be commonplace (寻常的) for many young people in China. Zhang Xiaoyan, a 30-year-old from Nanjing, Jiangsu province, was one of them. She typically ate in the office and seldom cooked at home on weekdays. Even on weekends, she would prefer takeout food. But amid the NCP outbreak, being trapped at home for an extended (延长的) period has changed her eating habit. Now, she rolls up her sleeves and cooks for herself. “Cooking by myself sometimes is quite time-demanding, but it helps me have a healthy diet,” Zhang told China Daily.

Instead of eating at fast food chains or restaurants, cooking at home has become a nationwide trend. Some even regard sharing food videos on their WeChat Moments at meal times as “a special way to say hello to each other when face-to-face dinner is not possible,” noted China Daily.

Apart from cooking at home, many also eat separately and adopt (采用) the habit of using serving chopsticks and spoons, or gongkuai and gongshao in Chinese.

Influenced by collectivism (集体主义), communal eating habits have been a part of Chinese culture for centuries. For Chinese people, eating one’s own dish would be considered rude during a social gathering. They typically share several dishes laid out in the center of a table and sometimes share utensils (餐具) in the meals to show their respect and closeness.

Though it seems polite, it’s indeed risky. According to World Health Organization, foodborne (食物传播的) diseases are quite common, and saliva (唾液) is one of the most common ways for them to spread. So many cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, have already launched initiatives (倡议) for people to order separate meals.

“Healthy eating habits and maintaining good order have become real issues for us. It’s related to people’s health and safety, and it’s also a personal responsibility during the pandemic (大流行),” noted Guangming Daily. These are habits formed amid the pandemic, but as long as they are good for our health, perhaps we should keep them from now on.

1. How has Zhang Xiaoyan’s eating habit changed?
A.She eats simple and quick meals more often.B.She cooks meals by herself at home.
C.She now orders more takeout food.D.She often copies the meals her friends post on WeChat.
2. What do Paragraphs 5-7 mainly talk about?
A.How to change communal eating habits.
B.Why changing communal eating habits helps.
C.The relationship between culture and eating habits.
D.The role collectivism plays in Chinese eating habits.
3. What does Guangming Daily’s quote tell us?
A.Eating habits have a lot to do with our health.
B.Safety always comes first in every situation.
C.People are warned that foodborne diseases are on the rise.
D.It’s difficult for Chinese people to break bad eating habit

9 . It was 3:21 a.m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the cracking (爆烈声) of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin Long Island.

With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, fell down onto the lawn.

The nine-year-old boy raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother’s room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy stayed calm and, as a fireman said later, "acted with all the self-control of a trained adult."

On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving his mother.

First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.

He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?

Grasping firmly a ball of string (线) from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother’s room. Tying one end of the string to her hand, he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.

Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan, "The string will lead you to mother." Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.

10 . Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.

Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.

While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.

When there's a recession in the economy, those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.

When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.

A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
