4 . I met a beautiful soul yesterday. I went to work with my computer to a local café so that I could have dinner there. It was raining a bit this time and also I was among people. Sometimes when you work from home all day this is in itself a treat. And the magic of the connection sometimes happens—a smile, someone offering you the newspaper, a short conversation with the staff, a peace dove flying past and lots of possibilities for love and kindness.
Well, magic did happen. I heard a man who was speaking with difficulty and very loud. I noticed he could not speak so clearly and he had some kind of impairment (损伤). As often happens, people looked at him or avoided doing so, and then—as if embarrassed or afraid—looked down. In these cases I try to do the opposite. I imagined a person in these situations would want to feel integrated (融入群体).
So I decided to deliberately (故意地) look at him and smile. It was an instant (瞬间)! He looked at me, smiled and immediately said hello. With a combination of spoken and body language he asked if he could approach me. I agreed. He introduced me to his friend who taught sign language online and explained that they were both deaf, after which he even told me about his wife and how he loved teaching. I apologized for not knowing sign language and hoped I’d learned. We still managed to have a beautiful “conversation” which made us all very happy. I’m sure we’ll meet again to experience the magic of being with others.

War broke out in our house in late July with less than a month to go before my first day of college. It was a battle of wills, my mom’s and my own, over which school I was to attend. She wanted me to attend the well-known nursing school to which I was originally accepted, but I wanted to go to a small, private writing college with a student body of fewer than 300 students. Every night for two weeks, we argued, yelled and gave silent treatments until both parties went to bed with regrets and frustrations.
It was mostly my fault. Since my junior year of high school, I had aimed at being a nurse. I took all the required courses, applied for nursing scholarships, and even worked as a volunteer in my town’s local hospital. My goal, or so I told everyone, was to treat the sick and heal the hurt.
Yet, as graduation and college neared, I gradually found it was not what I was meant to do for the rest of my life. I could picture myself in providing wound care, making rounds and taking temperatures, but I couldn’t picture myself happy. It wasn’t the future I wanted.
Then, it dawned on me. I had been creating and writing stories for as long as I could remember. Even at four years old, I had my dad write as I told him the stories I had created. I had written for my high school’s newspaper and attended a writing camp over the previous summer. I loved it, and writing was what I had always pictured myself doing as a hobby. Now, it had become much more than a hobby. It was going to be my career even if the future was uncertain. It had to be.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully(悲伤地) when she thought of the scolding(责备) from her mother. Wandering(闲逛) aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand(摊位) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes… but I don’t have money on me…” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless(没有同情心的adj. ) compared to a stranger!”

8 . Michael and his wife, new residents in a San Francisco apartment, learned about their neighbor Jeff Dunan’s volunteer work for Bangladesh Relief, an organization that provides food, clothing and essential supplies for disadvantaged people in northern Bangladesh. Inspired, Michael donated $150 to Dunan’s GoFundMe campaign. However, a credit card notification alerted him to an unintended $15,041 charge.
When he saw the five-figure number, he was confused. Soon, it all made sense. Michael’s credit card number started with four and one. Clearly, he accidentally began typing his credit card information while his cursor (光标) was still in the donation box.
Michael planned to call Dunan to explain, but before he had the chance to do that, he started receiving Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity’s Bangladesh-based program manager, thanking him for his generous donation. After he looked through the photos of people holding thank-you signs that read his name, Michael’s heart sank. He felt terrible that he had to withdraw his handsome donation. Once his original contribution was refunded, he decided to donate $1,500.
Although Michael had told his family and friends about the tale, he decided to share it publicly on social media, after Dunan told him the organization was desperately in need of funds. “The least I could do was take the time to post this story online and see if I could inspire other people to donate to the cause,” Michael said.
Little did he know, though, that the story would be seen far and wide, ending up raising more than $120,000 for Bangladesh Relief in the span of only a few weeks—about eight times Michael’s mistaken donation. According to Dunan, more than 3,700 people have contributed because of Michael’s post. Michael has been stunned (震惊) by the ongoing outpouring of support. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this reaction,” he said. “People can be amazing when they come together for something like this.”

10 . Two years ago, Laura Eshelman was struggling with a mental problem. And to top it off, she was having trouble finding work.
One day, she was leaving a downtown business where she had yet another job application rejected (拒绝). Feeling extremely disappointed, she decided to go to the Whole Foods across the street and found something for her hungry stomach.
As she crossed the street, Eshelman noticed a man, who was asking for money on the corner. His messy hair and clothing made it seem like he’d been living outside for a while. She watched as he asked a passerby for change, but she even didn’t look at him.
As Eshelman approached, the man turned his attention to her, and again he asked if he could have a little bit of money. “Leave me alone. I don’t have anything to give you. Just go away!”, Eshelman shouted, almost giving vent to (发泄) all her negative feelings. But these unkind words were just what made her feel regretful and ashamed later.
The man was obviously embarrassed as well as a little surprised. It was normal for him to be refused, but not usually in such a rude way. He just lowered his head and Eshelman continued into the grocery store. After picking up some bread and a bottle of water, she went to the checkout to pay. And it was at that moment that she found her purse, where she had put all her money and important papers, was missing.
