1 . 阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。

As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.

This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, neighborhood store just down the road from their house.

How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a large bag. Then he tied the bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.

After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately. The smaller trees had already been picked over pretty well, but he was able to find a half-dozen mangos before noon.

When the sun was high overhead, the hard work began. Nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. The other boys took their fruit and went away. Tony used his pocket knife to cut a long piece of bamboo. Then he took the tin can from the bag, tied it to one end of the bamboo stick, and walked over to the base of mango tree.

He stayed there, holding the tin can high up into the tree. His efforts were occasionally rewarded when a mango dropped into the can. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it,though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“No 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle (跨栏) and ...” Cheers broke out. “Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles!” The crowd went wild.

“County championships (锦标赛), here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes (钉鞋). They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we’re taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.

“Don’t forget, guys,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”

Next weekend couldn’t come soon enough. Jobie smiled with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she’d ever leaped before. And it wasn’t long before everything in her path was a hurdle: flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister, Teka!

The day of Marisol’s party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. “Perfect.” She smiled at herself in the mirror.

The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.

“Jobie!” Two of Jobie’s teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they yelled. “You have to try the slide.”

Jobie looked toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The biggest slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and dashed (猛冲) toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.

Jobie couldn’t get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she’d left her shoes.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

About ten years ago, my wife and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I didn't like to carry all my keys in my pocket during a hike, so I took away the key to the car and left the rest in the car. When we came back, I put the key somewhere in the car without reattaching(把……重新连上) it to the keyring. Then we made a fire, cooked some food, and went to sleep in the back of the SUV.

The next morning, we were cleaning up our campsite when I saw a bird inside my car. I walked over, and it flew away. When we got in the car to go home, I couldn't find the key. We searched and searched, even emptying out the car completely, but it was gone.

Then it hit me that the bird must have taken it. After all, those birds are known for stealing shiny things and decorating their nests with them. Keys are shiny. The bird was the thief! It made perfect sense to me. So I decided to find its nest.

But there was a problem: As everyone knows, the Grand Canyon is a little large in area, so I didn't have confidence in actually finding a certain nest belonging to a certain bird in a certain tree in all that space. But what other choices did I have?

My wife was not encouraging me. She said, “Are you crazy? You'll never find it! The Grand Canyon is one of the biggest holes on Earth!” I didn't answer and walked steadily forward until her laughter died away.

I struggled to keep hope as I searched dozens of trees and tracked every singing bird. It was like searching a needle in the sea. But, oh, how great my victory would be when I held the missing key from the bird's nest!

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The darkness was gathering as she wobbled(颤颤巍巍)in high heels along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of...get out and walk.

It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.

The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. “Maybe he will stop,” she hoped. The brake lights flashed on as it stopped. Next instant, the cab door opened. A wordless invitation was extended and she understood. Without hesitation the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door. Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.

I woke up in a cold sweat, alarmed. Was that a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.

I stood in horror trying to think why she had not come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30 am, but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.

“Hello?” The voice was heavy with sleep.

“Hey. Sorry to wake you. Becki didn’t come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place?”

“No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!” The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.

Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.

At 2:15 am lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter’s car.

The young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father said in a loving tone, "My dear son, I am so proud of you. But I hope you can remember: never spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect 'the packaging' to be different. What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened." The young man was inattentive (不注意的) to his father's words and responded impatiently. "OK, I know. Now, where is my gift? Dad." His father handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name carved in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money, you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful wife and a lovely son, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take charge.

When the young man arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart.

“Well, it's' about my brother,” Michelle answered . “He's really, really sick . . . and 1 want to buy a miracle.”

“One dollar and eleven cents, ” Michelle answered in a low voice. “And it's all the money I have, but I can some more if I need to.”

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots, or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.

Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift.”

Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.

Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (一角硬币).

Never before had Bobby felt as wealthy as he did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.

He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying, “You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you.” As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.

Paragraph 1:

A few minutes later, the shop owner came out.

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch(牧场).He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by sharing his own story:

"I want to tell you why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of a poor horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up."

"That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4, 000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch."

"He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, 'See me after class.'"

"The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, 'Why did I receive an F?'"

"The teacher said, 'This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.You have no money.Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. There's no way you could ever do it.' Then the teacher added, 'If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.'"

Clearly there was nobody at home:   those newspapers sticking out of the letterbox are a sure sign that the owners are away.

Ginger and Deggy climbed in and looked around. Then they heard the screech of brakes as a car pulled up outside the house. They ran as fast as they could. Ginger got away, but Deggy tripped and fell. The policeman grabbed Deggy by the collar and took him to the police station. They questioned him for hours and hours. They wanted to know the other boy's name, but he didn't tell them.

Meanwhile, Ginger sat at home, terrified. He expected at any moment to hear policemen knocking on his door. But he needn't have worried. His friend Deggy said nothing. He was sent to prison for a year. When he got out, he knew that his parents did not want him, so he decided to go and see his old friend Ginger. Ginger had not visited him in prison. Perhaps his parents had told him not to.

Deggy did not recognise the woman who opened the door.

“Oh, they don't live here anymore. I think they moved to Birmingham, but I am not sure. Sorry.”

The platform was crowded. It was the rush hour, and a crowd of business men and women were waiting for the train to take them back to their comfortable homes in the suburbs. Among the waiting passengers was a tall man in an expensive overcoat. He had the fat face of a man who lives well and eats only the best food. He was standing under the notice that said “Beware of Pickpockets'. A slim red-haired man was moving quickly through the crowd. ”He worked his way over to the tall well-fed man, bumped into him and then slipped away quickly. Unfortunately for him, a railway policeman had seen the whole thing. He grabbed the slim man by the collar, and dragged him to where the tall man was standing.

“Excuse me, sir,” the policeman said, “but would you be good enough to check your pockets. ”

“Good heavens! My wallet! I can't find my wallet!”

The policeman pulled the slim man up by his collar. “Come on! Let's have it!”

The pickpocket took the wallet out and handed it over to the policeman.

“Is this your wallet, sir?”

“Yes, it is! Look. Those are my initials.”

The sun was slipping down through the trees and it was time to go home,Time was running out. His mother would look at him and she always knew him. A hot tear ran down his cheek. She trusted him. He still remembered the first time she had left him alone for three hours between school and the time she got home from work. She had to work to buy his clothes and to pay for their food and for a place to live. He also remembered the nice way she said,“You are a little man now,Joy. ”It made him sad every time his mothers words came back to him. She trusted him.

Remembering this,he felt as if someone had stuck a sharp stick into his side. Her trust in him was all he could think about now. It drove everything else from his mind,“She trusted me. ”He kept saying to himself. She trusted me. This was most important. Next to this, the glass pipe and its magic music meant nothing.

Joy looked at the long shadows coming toward him. He didn’t know what he had to do. And he was in a hurry to hide it under the coat and left with slow unsure steps. But soon his feet were quick and decisive, taking him straight back to the store like an arrow. He was out of breath when he reached the store.

Mr. Dow was just inside the door. The big man smiled. Joy wished he had not. Somehow,a friendly smile made it more difficult for Joy to do what he wanted. Joy was lost for a moment. His feet felt heavy. Suddenly,he held out the glass pipe,His voice struggled to come out from deep inside of the painful chest.

“Mr. Dow”,he said at last. “I didn’t mean to do it. ”

“Thanks,Joy”Mr Dow said as he gently took the pipe from the boy's hand.
