When Ruth Hagan was 78 years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, going forty miles up and down the mountains in their Bronco (野马), winding terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖).
After dinner Marcy announced the water tank(水箱) was low and that she would take the Bronco down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow dirt road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there on the ranch(大牧场) roads since she was 12.
“Just be careful, Marcy,” her mother warned. “The cliff side is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.” Fifteen minutes later Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed. “Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The Bronco and Marcy—they went over! We have to help her! Come on!”
Judy took off running. Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight. Ruth raced down the steep hill, breathing hard. She ran on and on, down the hill, up the next, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.
Ruth stopped and looked around. She screamed into the darkness, “Judy, where are you?” Off to her immediate right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here, Mother! Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about twenty feet.”
“Oh, dear God, Judy, what can I do?”
“Just stay back, Momma! I think I can crawl(爬) back up. I saw the white roof of the Bronco when I was falling, Momma, and I heard Marcy calling for help. She’s alive! But she’s way down there in the valley. You have to go back to the cabin and phone for help. Tell them to send a helicopter. We have to get Marcy out!!”
Ruth turned around and started running back the hill she’d just ran awkwardly down. Up the hill, down the next. She had one hill left to climb when she fell on her face. Chest pains took her breath away. She started to sob.

A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me a S 10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way.
It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging (慢跑) around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. ”It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the $10 bill! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

In my local elementary school, I saw a child who looked bowed by burdens which were too heavy for his small shoulders. Tears ran down his cheeks. He was in a blue shirt, which is my favourite color. He sat alone at a desk in the back of his fourth-grade classroom, with his face to the wall of backpacks, coats, scarves, lunch boxes and little boots.
“Tony, you hadn’t done a bit of work all week,” his teacher said, looking in his direction. Her expression was that combination of helplessness and frustration I have seen too often on teachers who have too many students and too little help with the difficult ones.
I was a substitute for the special-education teacher, who provides individual and small-group instruction for kids who have difficulty in a regular classroom. I am untrained in psychology and inexperienced in special-education children. The only ice breaker I learned was: I’ll tell you one thing about me, then you tell me one thing about you. Except that, I didn’t know other ways to connect those special-education children.
Tony was not among the three students I’d be taking to the small special-education room for a math lesson. But I always thought of him as I taught the other three how to add numbers. Why was he sitting alone? Why was he weeping silently? Children usually cry or sob; they do not suffer in silence.
I looked up and saw the brightly coloured motivational poster on the wall. I put it up the day before. Seeing the words “You are worthy. You are loved.” on it, I wanted to help Tony.
That afternoon, I returned to Tony’s classroom and was met by his teacher, Max, who told me he loved reading. My other students for the reading lesson included Tony.
He was still sitting in the back of the classroom, still weeping silently. He didn’t argue when I asked him to come for his lesson: He simply didn’t move. His teacher comforted him. Max promised him the lesson would be fun. I promised to bring him back if he felt uncomfortable. Slowly, he got up. He followed Max and me into the reading room, tears dropping on the floor.

On one stormy afternoon last year, I was running home from school with my umbrella when I heard a bird start to sing. Out of curiosity, I went to have a look. Then I saw a brightly colorful bird nesting in a big tree. But the nest suddenly fell off.
With mercy and love, I decided to see if the bird had a chance to survive. Just as I went closer, I noticed a little head sticking out of the nest. I found that it had a wet broken wing, so it couldn’t fly. It looked so weak as if it were dying. So I placed it gently in my hand and covered it with my umbrella.
I carefully took it home and thought down the road how to explain this to my parents. What if they would not want it and throw it away? I could not take that chance, so I went out and put it in the back garden and gave it a warm blanket for the night.
In the following days, I went to school as usual, but somehow, I fell in love with biology class, especially when the teacher explained something about birds. I learned to feed the bird, and I hurried to care for it when the school was over. It was slowly recovering and growing. Holiday came at last. I couldn’t help telling my good friends about it. Then we secretly went to the back garden to look at my lovely bird. However, we were amazed to find that it had been missing.
Just as I thought where it had gone, a great surprise came all of a sudden. I found it staring at my cat in the distance. Catching sight of my appearance, it turned and came towards me. So I went to get it some water and birdseed. It was then that I found it grew into a big bird like a phoenix(凤凰) in the fairy tale. My friends all praised it, “What a beautiful bird it is!” Hearing their words, I felt truly proud. Fortunately, my care was not in vain but paid off.

Mary Lee seemed to have everything. She was very beautiful with a wonderful figure and an attractive face. She was very rich. Her clothes were better than anyone else’s and she had more of them. Her books were always new and expensive as were her pens, school bags and bicycle. She was very clever too and without appearing to do very much work. She was always the first in all the examinations and always answered all the questions, while the rest of the class were still thinking.
With all this, or really because of all this, no one liked Mary Lee. She was too good, too clever and she was also very proud. No one was quite good enough to talk to her or to be seen with her or to be her friend. And so, with all her proud ways and riches and brains, she was lonely but she did not care because she was always the best in everything. She was like a princess in the class. She always thought that the other students kept their distance from her because she was too excellent. “Lions and tigers are always lonely, and only the weak get together,” she told herself.
As the end of term drew near, the pupils including Mary Lee began to think about the most important prize of all. This was the prize, offered by the principal, for the best essay to be written on one of two subjects: Happiness and Friendship. All the teachers and pupils paid close attention to the prize, for it was really a great honor. “I needn’t worry about that,” thought Mary Lee, as the others began to read and to think about the essay. “I shall easily win. After all, my compositions are always better than the other students’.”
