文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。在商业领导方面和为人父母有共同点,作者介绍了从孩子身上学到的四大技能。

2 . Four Top Skills I’ve Learned From My Kids

In my journey as an entrepreneur (企业家), one of the best sources of leadership development is parenthood. There’s one thing that being a parent and being a business leader have in common.     1    . So what are some of the lessons that parenthood can teach us about business leadership?

Give up control

As a parent, I’ve learned that there’s only so much control you can really have over your kids. They need to make their own decisions — and mistakes — and learn from them. You can try to control your kids when they are young.     2     .

Become more flexible (灵活)

3     . You never know when someone might get hurt or sick and make troubles in your plans. Parenthood is a non-stop exercise in flexibility and adjusting to difficulties. The business world can be much the same way.

    4

We all make mistakes, and it can be tempting to hide those mistakes, especially from people you want to look up to you. But since we teach our kids to admit when they’ve made a mistake and apologize if they hurt someone, it’s important that we do the same when we make a mistake that hurts them.

Become more understanding and empathetic (共情的)

Emotional intelligence is one of the most important skills for effective leadership. And there’s nothing like being a parent to help you better understand people’s emotions and motivations.     5     . The empathy is a valuable skill for a business leader.

A.Admit your mistakes
B.Kids come with unknown risks
C.It’s that there’s a lot to be learned
D.As they grow up, you should let go
E.You’d better stick to your perfect plan
F.That can help you develop your empathy
G.Correct the mistakes as soon as possible

Sandy and Jane came to see the jobo tree on the hilltop again. Jobos were their favorite fruit, but the tree belonged to a lady who lived in the house by the hill. They heard she was difficult, but that sometimes she would give fruit in return for an errand(差使)

The girls finally gathered their courage to knock on her door. An elderly woman with a fierce look answered, staring down at the girls. “We heard …”said Sandy, her voice shaky, “that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.”

The lady raised one eyebrow, then went into the kitchen and took two baskets. She pushed them into the girls’ hands.“Go fill these with jobos, and come right back.”

The girls raced up the hill to the tree and filled the baskets with the ripest jobos. Back at the house, the lady filled a bag with rice and handed it to Sandy. “Take this bag and one basket of jobos to the Brown family. And ask them for the payment,” the lady added with a tight smile.“If you return without the payment, you won’t get the fruit.”

The girls struggled all the way with the bag and the basket. When they were there, Mrs. Brown answered the door. Inside on the floor were three little children, each painting something on papers.

Mr. Brown was lying sick in bed.Times were hard.

The girls handed her the food.“This is from the lady with the jobo tree, ” said Sandy.

“She asked for the payment, too.”Jane said awkwardly.

“The payment! The payment!” The children repeated, waving the paper in their hands happily.

Sandy and Jane looked at each other strangely. With a smile, Mrs. Brown handed Sandy a large sealed(密封的)envelope so full that it was almost starting to break open. The girls said goodbye and left quickly. “I wonder,” Sandy murmured, “whether Mrs. Brown can afford to pay for that food.”

4 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成 一篇完整的短文。

I yawned (打哈欠)as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.

“Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.

The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands,” his voice boomed, ‘‘Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. ” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.

“Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.

“6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.

6 . It was the final soccer game of the year. I was excited because I love playing soccer, but I was also sad to see the season end. My friend Amanda played on my team. She had worked hard in practice, but she had not scored in a game all season. We had one last chance to change that.

The game started out fast. Players from both teams crowded around the ball as it moved up and down the field. After a few minutes, one of our players burst out of the crowd of players like a piece of overheated popcorn bursting from a pan. She sped down the field toward the other team’s goal, keeping the ball in front of her. With a speedy kick, she sent the ball through the air and toward the goal. The goalkeeper reached to block the shot, but the ball soared(高飞)past her hand.

Our team had scored first, and we let out a cheer.

Our cheering did not last long, though. The opposing team, like a sleeping creature that has been awakened, came quickly to life. Their players rushed down the field, keeping the ball out of the reach of our players. In no time they scored a goal, tying the game.

The players on our team looked worried. Winning this game was important to us, but it seemed just as important to the other team. An opposing player almost scored another goal, but we blocked the net so the ball could not go in. After that, the game stayed tied for a long time.

With less than a minute left in the game, I was able to get the ball and pass it to Amanda. She looked nervous at first, but then she began to move toward the goal. Stopping quickly, she kicked the ball as hard as she could. It flew through the air, past two players from the opposing team, and right into the net! Our team let out another cheer. A few seconds later, the game ended.

Amanda had scored her first goal, and we had won the game. Her effort all season had finally paid off. The whole team gathered around her joyfully.

“Thanks, Julie,” Amanda said to me with a smile.

“No problem,” I replied as we walked off the field. “You earned it!”

7 . I decided to go single travel. The goal was to escape the four comers of my small room and the boring daily routines. There are comments from family and friends, saying it’s impossible and unsafe.    1     Therefore, I reminded myself why I decided to travel alone:

2     Traveling alone allows me to be the “Captain of My Own Destiny”. It’s an experience of complete freedom.    3     I can rest when I want and move on when I feel ambitious. I can taste—test anything like and alternatively I won’t be forced to eat anything dislike.

Challenge myself. I’m responsible to no one but myself. Every wrong turn is mine—and mine alone. Traveling alone is the greatest yet most rewarding challenges. It forced me to be confident in my choices. Every decision is based upon my own sense of self-belief. There’s no one to turn to or rely upon, and so trusting my own instincts(本能) becomes a necessary survival skill.    4

Reflect deeper senses. When traveling alone, there’s no need for boring dialogues.    5     Even so, I enjoy the long-lost freedom of becoming “one”. It leads to my deepest reflections about myself and the world around. I give my undivided attention to myself and the experience, which makes the most of the potential for personal reflection.

Travel alone helped me spread my wings and go beyond my greatest hopes and dreams.

A.Enjoy myself completely.
B.Enjoy complete freedom.
C.Loneliness can’t be avoided.
D.I want to do what I think is right.
E.I can choose to satisfy my every desire.
F.I was determined to prove them wrong.
G.It’s exactly these challenges that make me stronger.
