The Beautiful Game

I have a favorite footballer. His name is Chris Bush and he is a defender for the National League team Boreham Wood in Hertfordshire. He’s 31, and he plays in the number 5 shirt, and... well, I can’t tell you that much more about him, really, because, in general, I struggle to focus when it comes to football.

My disinterest in “he Beautiful Game” has been lifelong. At primary school, my classmates spent lunch break playing football, while I was in the library getting kicks from books and computers. In Games lessons, like all fat kids, I was put “in defence” which involved chatting to my friends and occasionally pretending to be bothered about where the ball was. I pretended to be expert in the game, cheering when a goal was scored, although I didn’t understand the rules.

As I got older, I stopped trying to fake it. In fact, I wore my aversion to football as a badge of honor, a fundamental part of my identity. I didn’t understand why so many people loved this sport. “It’s only a game!” I’d tell Dad, as he excitedly urged me to watch the game. When a big game was on, I’d go shopping instead of watching the game like most of the people around me. But, occasionally when meeting a friend’s father, I’d meet questions like “Who do you support?” And I would feel my heart sink, having no idea how to answer that.

This attitude of mine had stopped me from hours of conversation, and even entire friendships with people that I might otherwise have enjoyed. I couldn’t change the fact that I found football boring, but was coming to regret that I was an outsider. I never had the chance to go and watch a game and sometimes I would wonder what it would be like to watch a game and feel the atmosphere of the fans.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I remember that I was worn out when I got home that afternoon. I'd had to be at the theatre for the audition (试演) at nine that morning, and then I'd been waiting around for about three hours before the director finally saw me. I performed my song and almost at once he told me I could go home. “I am very sorry,”he said,“but your voice isn't quite right for the part.”It had been a similar story at all the auditions that I'd done over the past few weeks.

It had been my dream for years to be in a famous musical like The Sound of Music or Mamma Mia, so I'd taken lessons in singing and dancing, and had come to the city to try and get a part in a show. I'd been really pleased when I'd managed to set up no fewer than ten auditions, but so far all of them had gone the same way. As I arrived back that afternoon at the little apartment where I rented a room, I really wondered whether I should bother going to the eleventh the next morning. It was a show I'd have loved to be in — but really, what was the point? Someone I knew had told me about a job at a local coffee shop, and had said that if I called in for a quick chat at ten the next day, I'd almost certainly get the job. It meant missing the audition, but right now, it seemed like a much more sensible thing to do.

I always sing when I need to cheer myself up, and because there was no one else in the apartment, I slipped off my shoes, went and stood in front of the mirror and started singing.Quite quickly I found myself belting out (大声唱) one of my favourite songs, Bridge over Troubled Water. As I finished the song, I suddenly heard applause. I looked around the room thinking that my roommate had perhaps slipped in without me noticing — but there was nobody. Then I went over to the open window of the apartment, and saw an elderly woman standing on the far side of the pavement below, looking up at me.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I used to play football when I was a little kid. Okay, let’s face it. I was never really a little kid. I was so big that I got to play football a whole year ahead of my friends. Our football league didn’t have an age limit, but it had a weight requirement. If you were heavy enough, you got to play. I was heavy enough at the age of eight.

The only problem was, by the time I turned ten I was too heavy. You had to weigh a certain amount to start playing, but if you weighed too much they made you stop. Not playing would be just fine with me. I would be happier sitting at home reading a book.

Dad was one of the team’s big sponsors and friends of the coach, so I figured I would let him down and that quitting wasn’t an option. I went, day after day, and week after week... until I was eleven and weighed more than two hundred pounds. I thought that would be the end of it, once and for all.

However, my coach came up with a bright idea to help me lose weight. The very next practice he presented me with a T-shirt made out of a black garbage bag. “Put it on,” he said, pointing out the holes for my head and arms. “Start running around the practice field.” “Koop going, Fireplug (消防栓),” other players would shout. “Fireplug” was the new name they gave me. Although no one ever explained it to me, I figured it had something to do with me being shaped like it.

Every day in practice, I had to run in that stupid garbage bag. My short fat legs weren’t exactly comfortable, and often I’d trip and fall. The other players would laugh. At that moment, I asked myself, “Why? Was I being punished for something? Wasn’t the running, sweating and pain enough?” I suddenly realized that I’d been knocking myself out for something I didn’t even want to do in the first place!

Tomato Changed My Life

Doing things-without being planned was never my strength.

As a 14-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.

Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure (引诱) me away. “Come and watch the parade!” she would call from downstairs. “All neighbors are out there!” She thought of all kinds of tricks-the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles-to remove me from my -studies, but nothing ever worked.

Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the unused kitchen at home. When spring came along friends would stop by my dorm or peer into my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee on the lawn. “No, I would almost always say.” I have too much to do.

My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.

This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze. Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like decorations on a Christmas tree.

“If I have time, I’ll make tomato sauce (番茄酱).” I told myself. But my long week in the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I brought home from the office.

Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed to do.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A golden haze settled over the cornfields. The sun prepared to rest for the evening, and I intended to follow. Saying goodbye to the clan (宗族) I was staying with, I headed back to camp. I looked forward to setting my camera aside for an evening to reflect on my time in Ethiopia.

It wasn’t long when I heard a voice behind me, “Photo, photo, photo.” A young Surma boy about eight years old followed closely at my heels. I breathed a tired sigh. I had no energy to press the shutter button one more time, no matter how beautiful or eager he was.

Over the past four days, many in the camp had wanted their photograph taken. I hoped the boy would find someone else to snap his photograph, but he kept following me and saying, “Photo, photo, photo.” He managed to catch my eye. With eyes wide full of hope, he asked me again with anticipation on his face.

As I looked at him, half interested, an idea for a composition flashed in my mind.

I kneeled in the cornfield and instructed the boy where to stand and how to pose. As I prepared to take the photograph, his energy suddenly shifted from eagerness to shyness to fear.

No matter what I told him to do—how to stand and how to look—I just couldn’t get the shot. Frustrated, I gave up. I looked at the boy, who looked alone and awkward. He’d wanted his photograph taken, and now he’d gone camera-shy.

In an effort to cheer him, I clapped my hands, saying, “That was great. You were great.” Others in his clan gathered around, cheering and clapping loudly. The boy’s face immediately broke into a smile. I intuitively (凭直觉地) took a few shots of the moment. That photograph turned out to be better than I’d imagined.

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much.

One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to be punished when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behaviour.

But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the room I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy?” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students communicated with each other.

After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day?” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.

Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me.” I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worried about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A Great Monday

Monday started out well. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and then left my house. Ten minutes later, I was on the school bus with my friends. At one stop, Fat Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped (绊倒) over someone’s foot accidentally and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.

Every one of us on the bus laughed crazily. Ryan struggled to his feet, dusted off his jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. It wasn’t long before we heard the lunch bell. I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall. Then I couldn’t help but notice Ryan a few tables away, sitting all alone. He caught me looking. I smiled at him quickly and looked away.

When we had finished eating, we headed out to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. We practiced it again and again. One last time, I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans split (裂开) down the middle of my backside (臀部).

I froze. I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears begin to well up in my eyes.

Once upon a time, in a small town located near the edge of a vast forest, two adventurous souls named John and David had long been keen to go deep into the heart of nature. One day, armed with their backpacks, they determined to explore the forest. The villagers had warned them to stick to the main path, cautioning that there could be hunters’ traps elsewhere, but the appeal of the charming forest was too great to resist.

As they confidently ventured deeper into the forest, its beauty unfolded before their eyes. An hour later, driven by the hunger for the unknown, they made a decision to take the less-traveled path, making marks along the way carefully as they went. For another two hours, they observed various flowers, took pictures of strange-shaped rocks and marveled at the breathtaking scenery. The forest seemed to be a world of its own, untouched by human presence. Everything appeared so beautiful.

However, little did they know that danger was hidden under their feet. As they went further, they realized that their phones had lost signal, and they were completely cut off from the outside world. Suddenly, John stepped forward and felt the ground gave way beneath him. Before he knew it, he had fallen into a hidden pit(深坑), his leg trapped by the wooden spikes(尖刺) lining the bottom. Pain shot through his body as he cried out for help.

Upon hearing John’s crying out in pain, David quickly ran to the edge of the pit, desperately trying to find a way to pull his friend out. However, his efforts were in vain. “John, are you okay? Can you move your leg?” asked David worriedly. John winced in pain as he tried to move his injured leg, “I think I’ve hurt my leg, David. It aches a lot.” “It’s going to be okay, John,” David comforted him, “I’ll find a way to get you out of here!” With no phone signal and nightfall approaching, David knew he had to act fast.

A long time ago, people lived happily under the rule of a king. The people of the kingdom were very happy as they led a very happy life with wealth and no misfortunes.

Once, the king decided to go visiting historical places and pilgrim (朝圣者) centres at distant places. He decided to travel on foot to interact with his people.

People of distant places were very happy to have a conversation with their king. They were proud that their king had a kind heart.

After several weeks of travel, the king returned to the palace. He was quite happy that he had visited many pilgrim centres and seen his people leading a happy life.

However, he had one regret. He had great pain in his feet as it was his first trip on foot covering a long distance. He complained to his ministers that the roads weren’t comfortable and that they were very stony. He could not stand the pain. He said that he was very worried about the people who had to walk along those roads as it would be painful for them, too!

Considering all this, he ordered his servants to cover the roads in the whole country with leather (皮革) so that the people of his kingdom could walk comfortably.

The king’s ministers were surprised to hear his order as it would mean that thousands of cows would have to be killed in order to get a large quantity of leather. And it would also cost a huge amount of money.
