Are you stressed at work? A recent study found that one third of workers describe their jobs as highly stressful; and 75% believe that work is more stressful now than it was 20 years ago. Work-related stress can lead to headache, depression, memory loss, a lack of concentration, stomach problems and an inability to sleep. But what causes it?
Lots of things, apparently. For example, someone who finds their job too difficult may become stressed, especially if they don’t get any help. Similarly, someone who works too hard for too many hours can become stressed. Finding a job boring can also cause stress, as can working in an unfriendly environment do. But everyone is different. So, while one person may find working 60 hours a week very stressful, another may find it challenging and enjoyable
So, what can managers do to prevent stress? Once again, lots of things. They can make sure that the demands of the job and the skills of the workers are matched, that the worker is provided with the resources he or she needs to do the job, that problems are discussed, that employees are given timetables that allow them to organize their life outside work, and that everyone is given clearly defined roles and responsibilities. Also, that employees are offered rewards for good work, and that there are opportunities for career development.
More importantly, what can you do to reduce stress? Lots, too! For a start, you can talk about it. If you’ve got a problem, find someone to discuss it with. Get moving—ensure you’re getting lots of exercise. Make sensible food choice and eat food that’s good for you. Get lots of sleep. When you lack sleep, your ability to handle stress is compromised. Ensure that jobs are evaluated carefully before agreeing to take them on. Develop the capacity to meet challenges with humor. Laughter is a great stress buster. Give yourself more time! If you are always running late, set your clocks fast so you get things done in time. You have to do it all yourself.

5 . Scott Halley was a farmer...until a year ago. But the farm kept losing money. “You look at the numbers at the end of the pencil.” said Mr. Halley, 44, “and you realize it’s time to try something different.”
With a heavy heart but a clear head, Mr. Halley became one of the thousands of American farmers who sell their land each year. What surprised Mr. Halley and others is that the move to the city was so easy. The farmers are finding jobs and their families are enjoying the city way of life.
Mr. Halley found a good job working as a scientist at North Dakota State University. His salary is now twice what it was when he was a farmer.
But even for those farmers who find good jobs, there is a price to pay in leaving farming.
“It’s not just about making money but about the other rewards that farming can bring...working land your parent’s parents worked, spending your days in nature, caring for animals,” said Dr Michael Rosmann, a farmer and psychologist who helps farmers. “For most of them, that pain lasts for the rest of their lives. To make the decision to quit farming, to do what’s best for the family, takes an awful lot of courage.” Mr. Halley feels the pull of the land every day. Once a week, he drives eight hours to work a small piece of his old farm.
It was hard to leave, but Mr. Halley knows he did the right thing. For most families that leave the land, salary goes up and the stress from having little money goes down. Both parents and children are happier.
Halley’s children love living in the city.
“The kids don’t want to go back now,” said Mr. Halley. “The telephone never stops ringing.”
Megan Halley, 13, spoke with excitement about her new school. She especially likes art and computer technology. “Back on the farm,” she said. “the old phone system took five minutes or more just to dail up the Internet.”
“It’s cool here,” said Megan. “She loves going to the nearby mall to shop for new clothes and get the latest CDs of her favorite group.” The closest store to the Halley’s farm was a 10-mile drive.
Before moving to the city, Megan worried about getting along with city kids.
“The boys here aren’t any different than back in the country,” she said, “There’s just a lot more of them.”

7 . If you make a list of the top ten most challenging jobs in the world, chances are that being a teacher will not make the cut. Let’s think about their complex task millions of educators face each day as they try to teach a group of often unfriendly, disorderly kids into intelligent, well-rounded individuals. That surely has to be the toughest job in the world, especially taking into consideration that there is no promotion waiting for them even if they are wildly successful!
What if these all-important individuals that we often take for granted disappear from our lives? That was what Project Ed and Participant Media’s teaching campaign asked filmmakers of all ages to envision for their recently-held contest.
Their short films were called “A World without Teachers”, whose intention was to inspire more young people to become teachers. However, the 62 amazing video submissions (提交物) also serve as a reminder of how terrible things would be if we didn’t have these selfless individuals guiding us through life. What was interesting is that even the youngest contestants didn’t accept the idea that there’s no person to tell them what to do.
High-school student Savannah Wakefield considered if art as we know today would have been different without teachers. Would C. Monet have discovered his talent for impressionism?
Miles Horst won the 1,000-dollar prize for the best adult submission. He pictures a world where teachers are replaced by a “brain box”. Youth group winner Marina Barham’s video describes a fact we all know but often forget. Teachers don’t just teach; they inspire—something that no electronic device, no matter how smart, can do!
So the next time you think your teacher is being “troublesome” for trying to channel you in the right direction, imagine a life without him/her.
