文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要介绍了跳槽者对于自身及公司的好处并建议年轻人要每隔几年换一份工作。

1 . Changing jobs every couple of years used to look bad. It tells employers they can’t hold down a job, can’t get along with colleagues, or that they’re simply disloyal. That thought is fast outdated; the newcomers expect to continuously learn, develop, and advance in their careers.

There are a lot of arguments for changing jobs every few years. The economy isn’t what it used to be and never will be again. Workers who stay with a company longer than two years are said to get paid 50% less, and job hoppers (跳槽者) are believed to have a higher learning curve (曲线), and even to be more loyal, because they care about making a good impression in a short time and they know they’ll stay with each employer.

Patty McCord, former chief talent officer for Netflix, says young people should plan to change jobs every three to four years. “I think that the most important change in people’s thought is to view employees as smart contributors from the beginning. Everyone here wants to come in, do a great job, and contribute, then they either fit or they don’t. You build skills faster when changing companies because of the learning curve.” McCord says.

Why is the learning curve so high? Because job hoppers place themselves outside of their comfort zones constantly. They join companies, know they have to learn fast, make great impressions, and improve the bottom line. As a result, they’ re usually overachievers and learn a lot in a short time.

McCord adds: People used to think that the longer they kept an employee, the more worth they were to companies. In fact, an employee who stays on the job and isn’t learning at a really high rate is not doing good work. But the employees that job hunt are the most receptive of becoming extremely useful, very fast.

McCord believes that the learning curve nearly flattens after three years. If one wants to make a difference, he should leave. Employee retention (留任) is a big issue, and it makes employers anxious, says McCord. They’ve invested a lot in hiring big talent. To that, McCord has some advice: In 15 years, your company is growing rapidly because of all the high, job-hopping achievers that have come and gone.

1. Why are job hoppers more loyal?
A.Because their financial situation isn’t good.
B.Because they value good impressions in a short term.
C.Because they can get their pay to rise by 50%
D.Because they want to get no arguments with others.
2. What’s Patty McCord’s attitude to job hopping?
A.FavorableB.OpposedC.QuestionableD.Uncertain
3. It can be inferred that walking out of comfort zones will make people ________.
A.make a different impressionB.contribute more to society
C.become more knowledgeableD.get more achievements
4. What are employers mostly concerned about?
A.Employees’ loyaltyB.Employees’ talents
C.Employees’ stabilityD.Employees’ learning curve
5. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Job hoppers are more loyal.
B.Job hoppers have a higher learning curve.
C.You should switch jobs every few years.
D.You should walk outside of comfort zones.

2 . Choosing a major, which is the specialized area of your college study, can be overwhelming. But have no fear! Your choice of major will not lock you into a specific career for the rest of your life. And the major you choose will neither predict nor guarantee your future. Consider these factors when picking your major.

Career Prep

Choose a major because it will prepare you for a specific career path or advanced study. Maybe you already know that you want to be a nurse, a day trader, or a web developer. Before you declare, take a class or two in the relevant discipline, check out the syllabus for an advanced seminar, and talk to students in the department of your choice. Make sure you’re ready for the coursework required for the career of your dreams.

Earning Potential

Future   earning   potential   is   worth   considering—college   is   a   big     investment,     and while college can pay you back in many ways beyond salary, this can be a major factor for students who are paying their own way or taking out loans. According to PayScale.com, the majors that lead to the highest salaries include just about any type of engineering, actuarial mathematics, computer science, physics, government, and economics. Keep your quality of life in mind, too—that six figure salary may not be worth it if you're not happy at the office.

Subjects You Love

Some students choose a major simply because they love the subject matter. If you love what you're studying, you're more likely to fully engage with your classes and college experience, and that can mean better grades and great relationships with others in your field. If your calling is philosophy, don't write it off just because you're not sure about graduate school, or what the job market holds for philosophers. Many liberal arts majors provide students with critical thinking skills and writing abilities that are highly valued by employers.

Undecided? Explore your interests.

If you truly have no idea what you want to study, that's okay—many schools don't require students to declare a major until you are a second-year student. That gives you four semesters to play the field. Exploring your interests will help you find your best fit major—and maybe even your ideal career.

1. You don’t need to feel fearful when choosing your major because ______.
A.your major has completely nothing to do with your future
B.you are not limited to only one particular career for your whole life
C.changing career fields are unavoidable in your life
D.you only spend a little time on whatever subject you choose
2. The underlined word discipline is closest in meaning to ______.
A.fieldB.rule
C.theoryD.knowledge
3. What do we learn about from Para. 3?
A.Your college investment will be all given back to you in the form of high salary.
B.Future career earning is viewed as the top concern for most college students.
C.High salary will not be worthwhile at the cost of your unhappy office work.
D.If you choose engineering-related majors, you are sure to earn high salary.
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A.You are advised to choose liberal arts majors for what are provided.
B.Worse grades result from poor relationships with others in college.
C.Employers like liberal arts majors more than science majors in job market.
D.Some students don’t necessarily need to decide their choices of majors upon entering college.
5. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Why is it difficult to choose a major.B.What influences your choice of a major.
C.How can a major affect your career.D.When should you decide your major.

3 . Studies have suggested early rising and success might be linked. People who wake up early are more in keeping with the traditional corporate schedule and tend to have more positive personalities, which might lead to better grades in school or higher wages on the job.

Is getting up early for everyone? No.There's been lots of research about how some people are biologically more likely to feel more alert (机敏的)in the morning, while others are at their best at night. You might be more alert and have better cognitive (认知的)ability in the afternoon, for instance. So, if you don't naturally feel alert in the morning but decide to wake up early anyway, you might be disturbing your actual top performance times.Of course, people may have personal reasons for making an early start.Parents with young children or workers with nontraditional hours may also have no choice about what time they start the day.

Getting up early doesn't necessarily translate to instant success at the office. In fact, depending on the person, it could end up having a negative effect.Especially if you don't normally wake up super early and are trying to follow some kind of productivity fashion. An even worse condition may arise if you're actually reducing sleep to become an early riser.Sacrificing sleep means you may be hit by the many negative effects of sleep lack.Getting a full night's sleep and getting the same amount of sleep at the same time each night are both important. So if early rising means cutting sleep, don't do it.

What should you do? Don't listen to thoughtleaders or Linkedln influencers but figure out what works best for you.Pay attention to when you feel most tired and most awake.Make a note of the times you fall asleep and wake up naturally.Try to adjust your schedule to those times, as that's how you'll tap into most of your natural energy for the day ahead. And above all, it's getting adequate amounts of sleep.

1. What is Paragraph 1 intended to tell us?
A.The early bird catches the worm.
B.A good beginning makes a good ending.
C.A thousand mile trip begins with one step.
D.Constant dropping wears the stone.
2. Why is getting up early unfit for everyone?
A.People have different cognitive ability.
B.It disturbs working orders.
C.Not all are in their best state in the morning.
D.Few people have their top performance times.
3. What does the author think of getting up early?
A.It can lead everyone to success.
B.It has no negative effects.
C.It means shortening the sleep time.
D.It is less important than sleeping enough and well.
4. Which of the following statements is true?
A.Everyone is suitable for getting up early.
B.Getting up early will translate to instant success at the office
C.Sacrificing sleep means you may be hit by the many negative effects
D.Getting a full night’s sleep is of no importance.
5. What do experts advise to do with the working time?
A.Follow the advisers' directions.
B.Find out your own best time table.
C.Sleep more and better than before.
D.Use your energy averagely in a day.

4 . The Forbidden City is well known for being full of Chinese cultural and historical relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City (《我在故宫修文物》) does not just focus on the stories of the past.

Instead, the documentary movie, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec. 16, focuses on ordinary people—the restorers (修复者) of relics and antiquities (古董).

The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers’ work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers’ patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.

“If you choose this job,you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet,” says Wang Jin' an ancient clock repair expert.

A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship (工艺) in the restorers. “Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit, China Daily commented. Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance (忍耐),loneliness... All these qualities come from the craftsman spirit.”

But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.

One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says,”The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.”

Masters in the Forbidden City has proved wrong many people’s ideas about antique restorers, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.

1. According to the text, what’s the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City?
A.To show people how antiques are restored.
B.To display relics seldom seen by ordinary people.
C.To draw attention to Chinese antique restorers' lives.
D.To praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers.
2. Which of the following statements is true?
A.Masters in the Forbidden mainly talks about the story of the past.
B.Masters in the Forbidden talks about the story of serious expert.
C.Masters in the Forbidden shows the enthusiasm of the restorers.
D.The idea of the documentary came out on Dec.16.
3. According to Wang Jin, we can learn that ________.
A.he often gets tired with his work
B.there is no need to do restoration work fast
C.antique restorers need to be patient and peaceful
D.it takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration
4. The underlined word “humdrum” probably means ________.
A.boringB.differentC.relaxingD.unusual
5. The bicycle-riding scene in the documentary is used to ________.
A.remind the audience of the last Qing emperor
B.show the strange hobbies of young antique restorers
C.encourage the young to consider a career in antique restoration in the future
D.show that the documentary breaks from the old, dull image of antique restorers

7 . Latest research provides some good news for those who hope to someday live in a world where women coders and surgeons are as plentiful as their male workmates: Today s elementary school girls are actually more interested in pursuing a STEM(science, tech, engineering, math)career than their male classmates are.

What’s more, while young boys’ ideal jobs have stayed relatively unfluctuating over the past 20 years of the century, young girls’ career dreams have grown more ambitious. Back in 1998, a study found that 11-year-old boys were most interested in becoming an athlete, a service member, or an engineer. Now, a new survey of children 10 and younger found that boys` career dreams have stayed relatively stable. In this study, girls said they aspired(渴望)to be teachers, nurses and hairdressers.

Also notable: Overall, girls are more likely to say they are interested in a STEM job than their male workmates. Indeed, 41% of girls express interest in technical careers, vs. 32% of boys.

"Yet while girls’ increased interest in scientific careers is clearly something to celebrate, there is still progress to be made to make it a reality," said Simon Isaacs, a researcher. "We can celebrate the girls’ focus on STEM, but if we look at children aged 1 through 10 right now, we still have a long way to go with regard to getting girls involved in engineering, computer programming and other tech fields." Other recent studies have similarly found that despite their great interest in STEM careers, most American girls believe they are relatively unlikely to end up in a job that requires computer science or engineering skills simply because they don’t think these jobs belong to girls. "Even as we talk about being a generation that is growing up more gender-non-conformist(无性别意识的)than any other generation, we aren`t necessarily seeing that translate into what kids want to be," said Isaacs.

Isaacs said that he decided to pursue this research to better understand how today’s culture of role models—who are as diverse as Mark Zuckerberg and Malala Yousafzai—are hugely shaping the next generation of students’ career ambitions.

"What we find at the elementary level is that kids are often basing their aspirations on whatever they’ve been exposed to in the media," said Tony Wagner, an expert. Wagner says that gender standards described in the media have begun to change, specifically with regard to female characters in medicine and science. Wagner has found that girls are more interested in careers that are described as having a direct human connection, like medicine and education. "What they don’t understand is that much of engineering and other STEM work, is profoundly human-centered. The problem lies in how it’s taught," he said.

1. According to the latest study________.
A.there will be more female engineers and doctors than males in the future
B.more girls show interest in having a job in STEM related areas than boys.
C.boys’ career choices have greatly changed compared with those of 20 years ago.
D.most girls would like to become teachers, nurses and hairdressers in the future.
2. The underlined word "unfluctuating" can be replaced by________.
A.necessaryB.unchangingC.widerD.impossible
3. Simon Isaacs and other recent surveys tend to indicate that________.
A.more boys under 10 years old prefer STEM
B.there are more girls in tech fields than boys
C.girls who will really work on STEM are not as many as imagined
D.many boys can’t end up with STEM careers, either
4. It can be inferred that________.
A.we can’t see the change in careers between girls and boys
B.gender difference still exists in career tendency
C.there is no sex difference in career choices for kids
D.we can’t expect that all children like STEM
5. What is the main influence on kids’ tendency of the career choice?
A.Social culture.B.School education.

8 . 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

From time to time, life might provide a person with the present of a moment that changes everything. As for me, that came on a plane home in January, 2009. Frankly, as a lawyer, I specialized in corporate law in oil and gas projects. In fact, I’d grown to hate my job. It involved too much paperwork and loads of traveling, which I thought was fairly exhausting.

Actually, becoming a lawyer was unintended. I loved my school but it was competitive and students were destined for a good university, and then a graduate plan. That was the track I was on. After graduation, I became a lawyer, but that just made me trapped. I wanted to make a difference, but I had no idea what else I could do.

On that life-changing flight, I asked a stewardess to bring me a hot drink. When she returned, I couldn’t help crying. Hugging me, she said, “I don’t know what’s wrong but if you’re crying in business class, you need to change your life.”

Those words had a great effect on me. I couldn’t carry on in a job that made me so uncomfortable.

After much reflection, I resigned 18 months later. The last time I’d been happy was when I was volunteering at a school. Because of that, my friend Sophia kept telling me I’d love teaching. Then I contacted four schools and became a teacher in the end. No amount of planning would have prepared me for my first day as a teacher. It was stressful, but as I became familiar with the curriculum, I relaxed.

Five years on, I’m head of department. Watching my students develop is so rewarding and results day makes me burst with pride. I used to feel scared about the thought of becoming a more senior lawyer, but I’m so positive about the opportunities teaching can offer. I earn less now but I become richer in many ways.

Every single day, I feel excited to go to work.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议的文章。主要讲述了作为餐厅评论员在饭店所经历的变化,也反映了美国家庭收入和思想观念的改变。

10 . If you had asked me then if I would accept a job as a restaurant critic for The New York Times or others, I would have replied, “Definitely not! ” This was partly because I did not want to think of myself as an ambitious sort. Working in restaurants was honest labor, and anyone could see that. Writing about them for the mainstream press was not.

However, the renewing was fun, so much fun that when mainstream publishers started paying me for my opinions, I didn’t do the decent (体面的) thing, and before I knew it, I had stopped cooking professionally. Then I stopped cooking altogether. “She’s joined the leisure class.” my friend said.

I disarmed my critics by inviting them along; nobody I knew could afford to eat out and nobody refused. We went with equal amounts of guilt and pleasure, with a feeling that we were stepping onto the playgrounds of the rich.

We knew we didn’t belong to these grand restaurants. We always got the worst table, and since I didn’t own a credit card, I had to pay in cash. The year turned into two and three, and more. Then, I got a credit card as well as good clothes. I was writing for increasingly prestigious (声誉高的) publications. Meanwhile, a voice inside me kept whispering, “How could you?”

The voice is still there, never coming to a stop. When I receive weekly letters from people who think it is unacceptable to write about $100 meals while half the world is hungry, the voice rings right along, “They’re absolutely right, you elitist (精英) pig is not”. When it asks, “When are you going to grow up and get a real job?”, it sounds a lot like my mother.

It is just at that moment that I tell the voice to shut up because I realize all I’m doing with my life is telling rich people where to eat and how much the world has changed.

Yes, there are still restaurants where rich people go to remind themselves that they are different from you and me, but there are fewer and fewer of them. Going out to eat used to be like going to the opera; today, it is more like going to the movies.

Therefore, everyone has become a critic and I couldn’t be happier with this. The more people pay attention to what and how they eat, the more accustomed they become to their own senses and the world around them. As A. J. Liebling once said, all it really takes to be a restaurant critic is a good appetite.

1. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.The author was too honest to work as a restaurant critic.
B.The author found it hard to work for the mainstream press.
C.The author didn’t think highly of the job as a restaurant critic.
D.The author wasn’t able to renew the work as a professional cook.
2. How did the author feel about eating out?
A.She felt like eating out with the rich.
B.She refused to eat out with the critics.
C.She had a mixed feeling about eating out.
D.She got much fun from being invited to eat out.
3. What does the author want to tell us by saying “The year turned into two, and three, and more.”?
A.She stayed in the career as a professional cook for years.
B.She took up the job of writing as a restaurant critic for years.
C.It took a long time for the publications to increase their prestige.
D.It was years before her application for a credit card got approved.
4. What changes have taken place to American restaurants?
