1 . To be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use starting late in life to say “I will take an interest in this or that.” Such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do.

Broadly speaking, human beings may be divided into three classes: those whoare toiledto death, those who are worried to death and those who are bored to death. It is no use offering the manual labourer, tired out with a hard week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend. As for the unfortunate people who can command everything they want, who can gratify every caprice and lay their hands on almost every object of desire — for them a new pleasure, a new excitement is only an additional satiation. In vain they rush frantically round from place to place, trying to escape from the avenging boredom by mere clatter and motion. For them discipline in one form or another is the most hopeful path.

It may also be said that rational, industrious, useful human beings are divided into two classes: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. Of these the former are the majority. They have their compensations. The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. But Fortune’s favoured children belong to the second class. Their life is a natural harmony. For them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays when they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vacation. Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, of a diversion of effort, is essential. Indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasure are those who most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their mind.

1. What does “are toiled” in the 2ndparagraph mean?
A.have hobbiesB.feel pleased
C.work very hardD.are busy
2. Which is NOT true based on the first two paragraphs?
A.Being late in life to attempt to cultivate hobbies adds to mental stress.
B.Great knowledge irrelevant to the daily work can’t guarantee benefit.
C.Those tired out for a week’s labour are reluctant to play football on weekends.
D.Unfortunate people need discipline to help them build up hope.
3. For those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure, they ______.
A.are very willing to work long hours in the office or the factory
B.earn a large amount of money due to their hard work for a long time
C.are keen to enjoy the pleasure when they are off duty
D.usually enjoy themselves in the simplest and most modest forms
4. Which statement will the author agree with according to the 3rdparagraph?
A.The first class are lazy and the second class are bound to succeed.
B.The second class never need holidays because their life is harmonious.
C.The minority are more favoured by fortune because they never stop working.
D.One really needs alternation for a change in order to work better.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章先是阐述了Yellow Corporation 从盛到衰的原因,之后介绍公司CEO,Bill Zollars如何去扭转颓势。

2 . Since its founding in 1923, Yellow Corporation has been a leader in the transportation industry, using trucks to transport goods between points in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. For decades, Yellow achieved success by concentrating virtually all of its attention on increasing efficiency at every turn. Yellow has long been a master at ensuring that trucks are full before they have a warehouse, and it has also developed precisely time delivery schedules.

Unfortunately, Yellow eventually fell victim to its own success. As operational efficiency increased, customer service received less and less attention, and before long, newer and more responsive companies were taking away the firm’s customers. Accompanying this problem was the fact that the customers most likely to seek a more service-oriented transportation provider were also the ones willing to pay high prices for the extra service. As a result, Yellow’s financial performance began to decline, slowly at first, but then more dramatically. Naturally, the decline in profit led to even worse across-the-board service.

To help turn Yellow around, the board of directors offered Bill Zollars the position of CEO. Already a highly respected manager, Zollars was attracted by the opportunity to revitalize the carrier. Zollars quickly learned that organizational change at Yellow would have to be fundamental. Over a period of decades, people throughout the company were often willing to do only the minimal amount necessary to get their jobs done. Zollars knew that he had to alter the attitudes, behavior, and performance of 30,000 employees. He began by improving communication. The CEO spent 18 months traveling to several hundred locations, and at each site, he talked face-to-face with customers and with employees at all levels.   He asked for opinions and provided his own message---namely, that enhanced customer service was to become the firm’s new focus.

Zollars’s plan consisted of more than promises and motivational speeches. While previous leaders often didn’t focus on problems and refused to reveal information about the firm’s   performance, Zollars openly acknowledged the company’s defect rate---the percentage of shipments that were late, wrong, or damaged. Employees were shocked to find that the rate was 40 percent, but that knowledge was necessary to enhance motivation and set a benchmark for improvement. Zollars also instituted the company’s first ongoing program for surveying customer satisfaction, and the results were reported openly throughout the company. Zollars made a real effort to listen to employees, gave them authority to make decisions, and developed an enviable reputation for honesty and commitment. “If people doing the work don’t believe what’s coming from the leadership,” says Zollars, “it doesn’t get implemented.”

1. What caused Yellow Corporation’s financial performance to decline?
A.There was suddenly some difficulty finding enough warehouses.
B.Fewer customers were willing to pay high prices for extra services.
C.More transportation providers emerged with the market expanding.
D.It put more emphasis on operational efficiency than on customer service.
2. What did Zollars do to facilitate the fundamental changes in Yellow Corporation?
A.He communicated with customers in person.
B.He employed some highly respected managers.
C.He reevaluated all the employee’s performance.
D.He estimated the minimal amount of job each should do.
3. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that it was ______ that contributed to the success of Zollars’s plan.
A.the precise calculation of the company’s defect rate
B.the ongoing survey of the employers’ satisfaction
C.the improvement of the leadership’s confidence
D.the revelation of information to the employees
4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.The CEOs of Yellow Corporation
B.The Future at Yellow Corporation
C.The Success of Yellow Corporation
D.The Turnaround at Yellow Corporation

3 . A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. “Wait a minute” someone might say, “are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar?”

The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase(公文包) and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I’m Mr. Davis.” Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.

I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.

“All right then,” I said. “Okay, here we go.” Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forest of hands. Every student would yell. “Calm down, you’ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”

A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the topic of deep disappointment.

1. The author took the job to teach writing because _________.
A.he wanted to be respectedB.he had written some stories
C.he wanted to please his fatherD.he had dreamed of being a teacher
2. Before he started his class, the author asked the students to _________.
A.write down their suggestions on the paper cards
B.cut maple leaves out of the construction paper
C.cut some cards out of the construction paper

3. What did the students do when the author started his class?
A.They began to talk.B.They stayed silent.
C.They raised their hands.D.They shouted to be heard.
4. The author chose the composition topic probably because _________.
A.he got disappointed with his first classB.he had prepared the topic before class
C.he wanted to calm down the studentsD.he thought it was an easy topic

4 . Have you ever heard of Big Data or are you familiar with Data Scientists and Data Engineers? They are probably new job titles, but the core job roles have been around for a while. Traditionally, anyone who analyzed data would be called a “data analyst” and anyone who created backend platforms to support data analysis would be a “Business intelligence (BI) Developer”.     1

Here’s an overview of the roles of the Data Analyst, BI Developer, Data Scientist and Data Engineer.

Data Analysts are experienced data professionals in their organization who can question and process data, provide reports, summarize and visualize data. They have a strong understanding of how to influence existing tools and methods to solve a problem.     2    . However, they are not expected to deal with analyzing big data, nor are they typically expected to have the mathematical or research background to develop new algorithms for specific problems.

Skills: Data Analysts need to have a baseline understanding of some core skills: statistics, data munging, data visualization, exploratory data analysis, Tools: Microsoft Excel, SPSS, SPSS Modeler, SAS, SAS Miner, SQL, Microsoft Access, Tableau, SSAS.

3    . And then they collect requirements, design, and build BI and reporting solutions for the company. They have to design, develop and support new and existing data warehouses, ETL packages, dashboards and analytical reports.

Additionally, they work with databases, both relational and multidimensional, and should have great SQL development skills to integrate data from different resources. They use all of these skills to meet the enterprise-wide self-service needs. BI Developers are typically not expected to perform data analyses.

Data Engineers are the data professionals who prepare the “big data” infrastructure to be analyzed by Data Scientists.     4    . Then, they write complex queries on that, make sure it is easily accessible, works smoothly, and their goal is optimizing(优化)the performance of their company’s big data ecosystem.

They might also run some ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) on top of big datasets and create big data warehouses that can be used for reporting or analysis by data scientists.

A.In this case, the curious Data Scientist is expected to explore the data, come up with the right questions, and provide interesting findings!
B.Business intelligence Developers are data experts that interact more closely with internal stakeholders to understand the reporting needs.
C.With the emergence of big data, new roles began popping up in corporations and research centers -- namely, Data Scientists and Data Engineers.
D.This is why it is essential to know computer science fundamentals and programming, including experience with languages and database (big/small) technologies.
E.And they also help people from across the company understand specific questions with ad-hocreports and charts.
F.They are software engineers who design, build, integrate data from various resources, and manage big data.

5 . Ladies and gentlemen,

I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but to my work - a life's work in the agony(痛苦) and sweat of the human spirit. But I would like to use this moment as a climax from which I might be listened to by the young men and women already dedicated to the same agony and sweat, among whom is already that one who will someday stand here where I am standing.

Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it. Because of this, the young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat.

He, the writer, must learn them again. He must teach himself that the worst of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but the old truths of the heart, the old universal truths lacking which any story is short-lived and doomed - love and honor and pity and pride and sympathy and sacrifice. Until he does so, he labors under a curse(诅咒). He writes not of love but of desire, of defeats in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or sympathy. His griefs grieve on no universal bones, leaving no scars. He writes not of the heart but of the glands(腺体).

Until he relearns these things, he will write as though he stood among and watched the end of man. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simply because he will endure. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of sympathy and sacrifice and endurance. The poet's, the writer's, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and sympathy and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the pillars to help him endure and prevail.

1. The word “that” in the 2nd paragraph probably means ______.
A.the agony and sweat of the human spirit
B.the general and universal physical fear
C.the sustenance and endurance for a long time
D.the human heart in conflict with itself
2. According to the speaker, the old truths of the heart are so important that ______.
A.they are love, honor, pity, pride, sympathy and sacrifice
B.they prolong a writer’s life and protect him from curses
C.they are the soul of a real and powerful piece of writing
D.they can effectively stop the trend towards the end of man
3. How can poets / writers help man endure and prevail?
A.By inspiring man with his past glories through words.
B.By helping man endure the end through endless voices.
C.By recording sympathy, sacrifice and endurance in his soul.
D.By building spiritual pillars through immortal hearts.
4. The speaker may probably agree that ______.
A.the award was not fair because his life was too painful
B.young writers now are too fearful to bear the agony and sweat
C.the biggest obstacle to good writing is the writer’s fear
D.writing about man’s soul signals his final prevalence

6 . I started participating in student journalism when I was in high school. And when I started, I really just saw my articles as more fun versions of the academic essays I was writing every day in class. It wasn’t really until an article I wrote in March 2020, that I really understood the power of expressing my voice through journalism, and the unique appeal and responsibility of being both a student and a journalist.

Most of the things reported on in student publications directly or indirectly affect the journalists writing about them. This differs from mainstream publications (刊物), who often have the privilege (特权) to objectively cover things that they have no connection with. Student journalists, on the other hand, often find themselves trying to put on a different “hat” when it comes to reporting, but in my eyes part of the magic of being a student journalist is that despite putting on a different “hat”, it’s still the same you.

We know what is important to report on because we are constantly surrounded by the student voice. An Irish Times or Independent reporter would never know about the burden of high rents, or why so many campus spaces are not accessible, or feel the fears of examination changes in light of artificial intelligence. Students know what students care about, and what issues aren’t getting the attention they deserve.

I’ve always been drawn to comment articles, particularly because it’s a place I feel my voice holds a special significance, and one where my words and my articles come together to represent me. Opinion pieces are unique, in that they are the only article format that doesn’t have to be entirely objective. I, and many other comment writers I chat to, find this freeing. It’s a relaxing experience to work out an important issue from your own viewpoint and even with your own frustration (挫败、失意) or praise, and it feels especially personal.

We need to protect student journalists, but we also need to expand the field we can cover in student journalism. The student voice is powerful because it is diverse, and it’s critical to reflect their voice. The press also has an important role in defending itself. Freedom of information is one of the most sacred (神圣的) things we have, and one that we as students need to protect.

1. How are student journalists different from the mainstream publications?
A.They can hardly identify issues relevant to peers.
B.They have an objective viewpoint on the issues.
C.They report on issues directly affecting them.
D.They prioritize objectivity over other things
2. The writer most likely agrees that ________.
A.student voice may always lead us to making unfair judgments
B.student reporters can keep their individuality when playing various roles
C.student articles offer an entertaining twist on traditional academic essays
D.student journalists should focus on the topics within their professional fields
3. By giving the example of An Irish Times, the writer intends to ________.
A.inform readers of the high rents
B.attach importance to student voice
C.praise mainstream media for their efforts
D.bring up the topic of artificial intelligence
4. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Freedom of speech and the press
B.The importance of student journalism
C.The responsibility of mainstream media
D.Embracing the diversity of student voice

7 . The goings-on in the consulting room have become more transparent(透明的)recently. Thank goodness. We know more than the lines supplied by the movies in which the therapist knows all and gives wisdom to those who, sitting on a couch, consult with them. Therapists are interested in how the individual, the couple or the family experiences and understands their difficulties. That has to be a starting place. We can be of value if our first port of call is to listen, to gradually feel ourselves into the shoes of the other, to absorb the feelings that are being conveyed and to think and then to say some words.

The thinking and talking that I do inside the consulting room is at odds with many features of ordinary conversation. Not that it is mysterious, but it isn't concerned with traditional ways of sharing or identifying. The therapist makes patterns and theories, but they are also reflecting on the words that are spoken, how they are delivered and how the words, once spoken, affect the speaker and the therapist themselves.

Words can give voice to previously unknown feelings and thoughts. That’s why it’s called the talking cure. But just as words reveal so, too, can they obscure, and this gets us to the listening and feeling part of the therapy. Whatever and however the words are delivered, they will have an impact on me as a therapist. I might feel hopeless, I might feel energized, I might feel pushed away, I might feel demanded of, I might feel pulled to find solutions.

The influence of the other is what makes any relationship possible or impossible. A therapist is trained to reflect on how those who consult with them affect them. As I try to step into the shoes of the other and then out again, my effort is to hold both those experiences, plus an awareness of my ease or discomfort with what I encounter in the relationship.

Feelings are the bread and butter of our work in the consulting room. They inform or modify our ideas and they enable us to find an emotional bridge to what can so hurt for the people we are working with. Along with the more commonly thought-about theories and ideas we have about the psyche, they are an essential part of the therapist's   toolkit, certainly for me. The talking cure means talking, yes. It also means the therapist is listening, thinking and feeling.

1. In which way is the thinking and talking the writer does different from ordinary conversation?
A.It may not be understood by patients.
B.It is full of terms used by most therapists.
C.It is a good reflection of traditional talking.
D.It involves thinking about how people speak.
2. The word" obscure"(paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to________.
A.cancelB.clarify
C.confirmD.conceal
3. Which of the following is the writer most likely to agree with?
A.Patients' influence has been neglected by therapists for too long a time.
B.Therapists need to think from their own perspectives as well as patients'.
C.It is no easy job for therapists to realize how uncomfortable their patients are.
D.Therapists had better push away those negative emotions acquired from patients.
4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Awareness of feelingsB.It’s good to talk—and listen
C.Theories that help therapistsD.What is the point of being a therapist

8 . Much discussed and rarely achieved in full, work-life balance is an elusive prize in modern professional culture. While it can depend greatly on the priorities and values of an individual and their manager, some jobs provide strong opportunities for those looking to combine a fulfilling career with a thriving personal life.

“Work-life balance is not a situation anymore where you’re at work and then you’re at home, it’s more this balancing between the two,” said Lauren Griffin, senior vice president of Adecco Staffing U.S.

Topping the list of jobs that provide strong work-life balance is data scientist. According to IBM, “A data scientist represents an evolution from the business or data analyst role.” IBM notes that while the formal training in computer science and applications, modeling, statistics, analytics and math for these jobs is similar, “What sets the data scientist apart is strong business acumen, coupled with the ability to communicate findings to both business and IT leaders in a way that can influence how an organization approaches a business challenge.”

Stan Ahalt, director of the Renaissance Computing Institute at UNC Chapel Hill, said that the strong demand for data scientists, coupled with the anemic supply of these professionals currently available in talent pipelines, is likely creating a situation where companies will go above and beyond to attract the right talent.

“The demand for people who are able to analyze massive amounts of data and extract actionable decisions has really blossomed,” said Ahalt. “The people who are being hired are being highly sought-after, so I suspect they’re getting relatively good offers, and offers that include flexibility in their hours and locations simply because there are many more jobs than there are people.”

The list is also diverse and representative of a broad spectrum of occupations, with part-time and seasonal jobs like lifeguard and substitute teacher holding spots, as well as corporate jobs and skilled trades.

And for job-seekers or those planning a career change who want to prioritize work-life balance in their next role, Griffin said the most important step is identifying your greatest personal commitment so you can target a job that’s accommodating by nature, or an employer that will work with you to reach a solution.

“You need to define what’s non-negotiable for you,” said Griffin. “What’s that specific thing that you know you need some balance for, is it dropping your kids off, or taking your mother to a doctor’s appointment twice a month? What are those key points for you? Because then you can have a more open conversation with your employer.”

1. A job of work-life balance is suitable for those ____.
A.who gain a prize in professional culture
B.whose managers care about their priorities and values
C.who expect satisfaction from both career and personal life
D.who prefer to work anytime and anywhere at their wills
2. "These jobs" in the third paragraph indicate jobs ____.
A.in the list which provide strong life-work balance
B.of the data scientists, the business analyst and the data analyst
C.that require strong business sense and communication skills
D.that influence new business challenge of an organization
3. Data scientists are people who ____.
A.are professionals likely to create a new situation in talent pipelines
B.can analyze massive amounts of data and extra actionable decisions
C.have relatively good offers including flexibility in their hours and locations
D.are more demanded than part-time lifeguards and substitute teachers
4. For job-seekers who want to highlight work life balance, they ____.
A.must be very committed to the targeted job personally
B.have to support employers decisions without negotiation
C.should first decide what the balance is needed for
D.should drop kids off on time and take care of mothers

9 . Darius (runner)

I’ve always been sporty, but I was best at football and athletics. When I was 14, I had a trial for a professional football club, but eventually I chose to go down the athletics route instead. My biggest moment came when I got to compete for my country in the youth team and got a medal. It didn’t result in much media attention, though. I’d been hoping some sponsorship would come out of it, because the training doesn’t come cheap. I train at home all winter and then go away for three weeks before the season starts. You’ve got to be really disciplined, though. If friends ask me to go out the night before training, I have to say no. I wish I didn’t, but dedication pays in this sport. The main goal for me is to get to the next Olympics—that would be fantastic.

Gabriel (surfer)

The surfing community is small, so you get to meet the same guys wherever you compete. Professional surfers are very serious and often the best waves are at dawn, so if you’re really going to get anywhere, you have to cut out late-night parties altogether. I don’t mind that so much, but I do love having a lie-in, and I usually have to give that up too. But it’s worth it because without that kind of dedication I might not have won the National Championships last year. And, of course, the sacrifices are worth it in the long run because winning that championship meant I got picked to present a surfing series on TV. I guess I’m a bit of a star now.

Dieter (yacht (帆船) racer)

With five people on a boat together, you have a good laugh. We’re very traditional and we always celebrate a win in great style. If it has been said that we act a bit childishly when we’re out, but we don’t actively go looking for media coverage. Sometimes the reporters actually seem more concerned about where you go out celebrating and what you get up to there than about where you came in the race. I’m away for eight months of the year, so if it is great to get back, go out with my mates from other walks of life and do the things they do. I’m known within the world of sailing, but fortunately I can count the number of times I’ve been recognised in the street on the fingers of one hand, I’d hate to become a star.

Tomas (tennis player)

It’s always a great thing to walk on court and feel that the crowd’s behind you. At the last competition, though, it all got a bit crazy with people crowding around. Despite that, I have to admit that I do still get excited if spotted by fans when I’m out shopping or something. It has its downside though. Tennis players have to travel quite a lot, and in the end that’s why my last girlfriend and I split up, I guess. That was hard, but you’ve got to make sacrifices in any sport; you’ve got to be serious and professional. Actually, it doesn’t really bother me too much. I’m satisfied to concentrate on my game now and catch up on the other things in life once I retired, because, after all, that comes pretty early in this sport.

1. Both Darius and Gabriel think that ________ plays an important role in being a professional athlete.
A.relaxationB.talent
C.media attentionD.self-discipline
2. Which of the following athletes says he/ she doesn’t enjoy media attention?
A.DariusB.GabrielC.DieterD.Tomas
3. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.Dieter isn’t that popular in the world of sailing.
B.Gabriel won last year’s National Championship.
C.Darius had been a professional footballer for several years.
D.Tomas doesn’t like his personal life being affected by his career.
