Having struggled with financial difficulties for six months and failing to find a way out, I had to close my technology writing business. Fortunately, I found a new job as a salesperson and soon got a client. At the time, I wondered if it was too good to be true.

By the second month, something didn’t seem right, and I developed a bad feeling about the client and the work. When the third month’s check didn’t arrive on time, I sent the client an e-mail to find out what was going on. But there was no reply. Then I sent another e-mail, and another. The check never arrived, and I never heard from the client again. With no hope in sight, I hit rock bottom. Panic replaced cautious optimism along with my last self-confidence.

I hid myself from friends and locked myself in my room. One night, the phone rang. The call was from Eric, a friend of mine from high school. When he was in high school, he told me many times about his parents’ divorce and his loss of confidence in the college entrance examination. During the difficult time, I gave him much comfort and encouragement. Later, he went to college and was always grateful for what I had done.

After the greetings, I told my problems and challenges, hoping my friend would say something comforting. What I didn’t expect was a string of sharp words. “What is wrong with you? You can do anything you want to do,” he said. “You are a writer, so start writing. Write for magazine.” “Write for magazine? Are you out of your mind? I don’t know the first thing about writing for magazine, let alone write things that anyone would want to read. And I have to know where I can send an application form-to what magazine and to what editor,” I shouted at him.

Appreciation of Hard Work

A young man applied for a managerial position in a big company. In the last interview, the director of the company found that the young man was excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research.

The director asked, “Did you obtain any scholarships in school?”

The youth answered, “None.”

The director asked, “Was it your father who paid for your school fees?”

The youth answered, “My father passed away when I was one year old. It was my mother who paid for my school fees.”

The director asked, “Where did your mother work?”

The youth answered, “My mother worked as a clothes cleaner.”

The director asked the youth to show his hands. The youth showed his smooth hands.

The director asked, “Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?”

The youth answered, “Never, my mother always asked me to study and read more books. Besides, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.”

The director said, “I have a request. When you go back today, clean your mother’s hands and then see me tomorrow morning.”

When he went back, he happily asked his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange but happy. The youth cleaned his mother’s hands slowly. His tears fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother’s hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water. After finishing the cleaning of his mother’s hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.

A Shift From Classroom to Career

For all the years spent in school preparing to enter the workplace, many recent graduates say that they struggle with the shift from classroom to career world and have difficulty adjusting to life on the job.

Writer and editor Joseph Lewis believes that most of our school experiences are fairly predictable, while life in the working world is far more uncertain. In school, for example, the pattern stays more or less the same from year to year. In the workplace, however, constant change is the norm, and one has to adapt quickly.

Another problem is that in school, many students spend a lot of time memorizing facts and repeating what they "learned" on tests. But in the workplace employees “are often expected to think critically and make decisions about their work, not just follow a supervisor's instructions." Less time needs to be spent in school on testing, says one recent report, and more on helping students to analyze information, solve problems, and communicate their ideas effectively.

Finally, in the workplace, employees must regularly interact with others and are often dependent on their co-workers for their success. In other words, if an employee has to work with others to complete a given project, that employee's success not only depends on his hard work and expertise, but also on how well his colleagues perform.

How can we better prepare young adults for the workplace? It is suggested that students should do an internship while they are in school. Volunteering part time at a company, hospital or government organization, for example, can help them                                 gain experience and learn skills. Doing these will help prepare students for the realities of the workplace and make the transition from school to career world less stressful.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was a writer, but yesterday the boss told me he decided to fire me. That was wrong, because I created many great articles for our company. I didn't want to let the news upset my children, so I invited my wife to a restaurant we often went to.

I walked into the restaurant, surprised by how empty it was. Not too long after, I saw Carrie walk in. “Where are the kids?” I asked. "At Mother's." Carrie said. "So what did you want to tell me?" she asked curiously. "Well when I tell you, you can't break down." I said. She nodded hesitantly.

“Well, ... my boss said ...he would fire me if I couldn't come up with a good story.” "What! You've been working there for 5 years since your best friend Jack left there. Although later Jack tried to invite you to work with him, you refused. You could basically run the place!” She shouted. "I know, I know.” "How can he just fire you like Jack?” She looked at me with worry in her eyes. "What about the kids? How will we pay for the house? How will we ..." I cut her words off and promised. "I'll find a new job. Any job will do as long as it pays." Suddenly a man across the diner said, "My friend is looking for a new writer ... someone that can really tell and show the story.” "Where can I find him?” I asked. "He's got a shop down the street with a big yellow sign on the top." he says. "Thank you so much!" Carrie said thankfully as we left the restaurant.

“There!” Carrie pointed to a big yellow sign reading, "The Daily Dispatch". "I've heard about this place!” I said turning to Carrie. t4This is the worst newspaper company here!” I complained. “Well I guess I should go in for an interview. A bad job is better than none." I sighed. "George, I don't want you to do something you hate." “Well at least I can make some money if I have a job."   said.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写成两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Hopelessly I was being with a class of wild senior year girls as they threw paper and shouted loudly with laughter. No one seemed to care about who would step into the classroom, let alone listen to me. And being a teacher was the last choice of my occupations. I wanted to be a writer. But when I arrived in London, teachers in this community were badly needed.

However hard I tried to manage a normal teaching , their facial expressions told me that it was in vain. For the previous 2 months, as soon as the bell finally rang, I rushed to the staff room, red with anger. The other teachers weren't surprised. "That's Top Naughty, the most difficult class in the whole school."

But I was reluctant to give up. I decided to abandon formal teaching and lessons. Instead, I brought topics for class discussions. Two of the liveliest talks were: the arguments they had with their parents and their choices when being in dilemma. For the first time in my memory they were serious, sharing about their lives and behaving as a mature adult. I was fascinated. Therefore, I had them write about themselves. As time went on, their essays became a bridge between us. I admired their humor, determination and perspective, and meanwhile I thought they appreciated my interest in their lives.

The musical My Fair Lady (窈窕淑女) was playing in the West End, I asked if they'd like to see the musical. They thought I was joking and did not take it seriously, since no teacher had ever suggested taking them out. A few weeks later, Top Naughty and I were sitting in a theatre. They loved the music and the main character who changed herself from the wildest to the most elegant. It was the highlight of their year, and they talked about it for the rest of their last year.

Near the end of their senior year, someone knocked on the door of the staff room

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60词左右的内容概要。
Are You a Team Player?

We hear a lot about team building these days.Team-building experts are hired by some corporations to lecture us on how to work more effectively with each other. And they organise awaydays-a time employees spend together away from their usual workplace.

Here in the UK,employees can take part in activities such as Zombie boot camps where military instructors train you how to fight walking “dead people”.For the brainier office workers amongst us there are crime investigations modelled on popular TV dramas like Sherlock Holmes and CSI.

Stressed-out city workers might have ukulele lessons made available to them. Why is that a good team-building exercise?Ukulele teacher Lorraine Bow says,“The fact that they can play a musical instrument within an hour is quite a fulfilling thing, really. It’s not competitive-it’s quite easy to do and a bit less intimidating than a guitar...”

Actually,a horse might be a bit more intimidating than an instrument. The animals are used by a company in Abu Dhabi which teaches leadership through horse training.Basically, you have to go in a yard with a horse and persuade it that you’re the boss by using body language.

Kelly Eide,co-founder of True Leadership, says,“The horses don’t care if your hair is purple,if you’re a man or a woman,if you’re old or young...It transcends (超越) all of those cultural boundaries-age,gender,religion,tradition,etc.-so that’s a perfect fit.And in an organisation where you really need groups of people to gel (相互磨合),who come from different backgrounds which have no common norms, you can teach that most efficiently with a horse.”

And the horse feels instinctively whether or not you are a natural leader. So if after you’ve done a good presentation your boss offers you a carrot, you’ll know where he might have learnt it from.

While my classmates were still struggling to get a job, I had succeeded in getting one, which made me feel very proud of myself.

I went through my morning routine and spent a lot of time deciding what to wear. I definitely wanted to make a great impression right from the start. Finally, I settled on the white suit with a tie.

I waved to say goodbye to my mother and set off cheerfully towards the bus stop. But l Saw a bus leaving the stop just as I turned around the corner. Now I would have to wait for another 15 minutes, even though time was very precious. I stood there patiently. 15 minutes passed and then 30 minutes, and there was no sign of the bus. Now what could 1 do? I had to reach the office on time. I saw a motorcycle approaching, but as I tried to stop it, the driver sped on without even a glance. I was uncertain at first but then forced myself to get in as I was going to be late. Gradually, I realized that we were not on the familiar route to my office. I asked the man to stop the car, but he did not listen to me and told me to shut up.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.

Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.

However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook.
