1 . The applicationprocess to almost every college and university in the United States has several parts to it. Each part tells admissions officials at the schools something different about an applicant.    1    A list of the student's activities outside of school can show what his or her interests are.

2    In it, students are expected to write about themselves and express their personal opinions about an issue. The statement helps admissions officers answer questions they may have about a given student.

3    Some schools will ask an applicant a very specificquestion. Others will let the student choose between different subjects or simply write about anything they want. Generally speaking, there is no one perfect way to write an essay.    4    This could be about a difficult time when they were growing up or a meaningful relationship they had.

However, they should also be careful about the subject they choose. Many students think that telling a sad story makes them easy to remember.    5    What they want is an essay about anything that is truly special or important to the student, and which also shows their better qualities. In addition, it should show the student's understanding of the world and what their experiences or way of thinking will bring to the school.

A.Every school has its own way of looking at the essay.
B.Getting started in the writing process can be difficult.
C.But that is not necessarily what admissions officials want to see.
D.Class grades can show the subjects a student is strong in, for example.
E.Therefore, remember to avoid discussing topics like politics and religion.
F.Given a choice, students should choose to write about an issue they care about.
G.But nothing really tells the story of an applicant as well as the essay or personal statement.

2 . 语法填空

Have you ever asked yourself why children go to school? You will     1     (probable) say that they go to school to learn languages, mathematics, history, science and some other knowledge. That is quite true,    2    why do they learn these things?

We send our children to school in order     3     (prepare) them for the time when they really grow up and will have to work for     4     (they).Nearly everything they study at school has some practical use in their life. But is that     5     only reason why they go to school? There is more in education     6     just learning facts. We go to school to learn how to learn, so that when we have left school we can continue to learn.

A man     7     really knows how to learn will always be     8     (succeed),because when he has to do something new, he will not only be able to do it well himself, but he will also be able to teach others how to do it in the     9     (good) way. The person with poor education, on the other hand, either finds himself unable to do something new, or just     10     (do) it badly. The main purpose of schools is not to teach those subjects, but to teach pupils the way to learn.

3 . Taking good notes

Have you ever stared at your heavy textbook, your piles of handouts and wished you knew just what questions your teacher planned to put on the next big test? Lacking a crystal ball, most students feel they have no choice but to look through all that material, drill it into their brains, and hope they can remember the right parts as test time.

1    If you learn the best ways to take good notes, you’ll make the job of studying for tests a lot easier from now on.

Keep up with your assigned textbook reading. Come to class with an interest in the material and with questions to be answered. You can develop these by thinking about and expecting the lecture and by pre-reading the text.    2

Date each day’s notes and leave wide margins(页边空白). Dated notes guide you to the right material to study for a test. At test time, the extra margins give you room to add more information if you need it.    3

Write down main ideas and underline or highlight them. Main ideas give you the big picture of information, the reasons why events took place. Write out a main idea whenever you think you hear one.    4    This kind of notetaking helps you connect related information, making it easier for you to remember it for a test later on.

Use abbreviations and symbols to make note taking easier. Here are a few simple ones:

+: plus, and

=: equal, same as, similar, like

Eg: for example

w/o: without

5    If you write down something that doesn’t make sense, talk to someone right away to clear up the problem.

A.Write out a main idea.
B.See your teacher or a classmate about confusing notes.
C.That’s the hard way to study.
D.This gives you an overall sense of what the text is about.
E.Then use single words or short phrases to list related details that tie into the big idea.
F.Also, the extra space will make it easier for you to find the material.
G.When you are prepared, your teachers comments make more sense.

Everyone knows that good time management skills are important to students if they want to do well in school.    1    The skills listed below are quite important.

You should have the ability to say “no”. A party this weekend? A cool club to join? An overnight trip on Saturday? A quick pizza with your classmates that turns into three hours of just hanging out? Learning to say “no” can save you a lot of time. But it’s not easy to say “no”. You should develop some good skills in saying “no”.    2

You shouldn’t spare time for all the fun activities. High schools are amazing because there is always something fun for you to take part in. Unfortunately, you cannot spend time on all of the fun activities.    3    You can go there when you finish your homework. In this way, you needn’t feel guilty about enjoying yourself.

4    Some students like putting off things. This is a bad habit. You may end up with too many tasks one day. If you have a task, don’t wait to get started until the last week, because you may not know what to do at all if you have too many tasks and you may end up in crisis.

5    Staying up a little too late? Maybe not eating a healthy dinner every night of the week? In order to keep in good health, you have to check on time so as to be energetic. Practicing a little self-care can really go a long way towards making sure you can have enough passion for your work with your limited time while in school.
