2 . It is not so difficult to make friends after you move to a new neighborhood. As long as you are open and friendly, you will be able to make new friends after you move to a new area.     1

Smile and say hello to any neighbors you see. Smile to your neighbors from day 1.     2     Being warm and friendly with your neighbors is the first step to getting to know people who may turn into friends.

Go for walks around your new neighborhood.     3     Taking a walk in the morning or the evening is an easy way to meet people and learn more about the neighborhood. If you have a dog, you will be walking anyway. Keep an eye out for other neighbors with dogs and take the chance to say hi.

4     This will help you get to know the neighborhood so you can find more places to meet your neighbors. For example, you can ask them what the best restaurants are, where to find a good cup of coffee or what parks are nearby.

Throw a housewarming party at your new place. Parties are one of the quickest ways to enlarge your social circle. Have a small gathering at your new apartment and invite your neighbors over to get to know them.     5     Another choice is leaving invitations under their doors or into their mailboxes.

A.Ask some difficult questions.
B.Ask neighbors questions about the neighborhood.
C.Giving a friendly "hello" to them is also a good idea?
D.But first of all, you need to get to know your neighbors.
E.This will give you more chances to meet your neighbors.
F.However, you can improve your relationship in many ways.
G.You can invite them in person if you have already talked with them.

3 . Gossip—all humans take part in some form of it. Whether its workplace chatter, the sharing of family news or group texts between friends, it's ________ that everyone who talks, well, talks about other people. ________ , a 1993 study found that male participants spent 55% and female participants spent 67% of their conversation time on "the discussion of socially relevant topics."

People tend to think of gossip ________ to ill-intended rumors, negative comments or the breathless spread of a tabloid scoop(小报独家新闻). But researchers often define it more broadly—as "talking about people who aren't ________ ," says Megan Robbins, an assistant professor of psychology at The University of California, Riverside. "It`s something that comes very ________ to us"—it's an essential part of conversation, information sharing and even community building.

In a 2019 study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, Robbins and a colleague found that, of the 52 minutes a day, on average, that the 467 subjects spent gossiping, three-quarters of that gossip was actually ________ . One subject, for example, spoke about someone who was watching a lot of movies to keep up with the times.

Just a small portion of the conversations analyzed—around 15%—was considered to be negative gossip. So while it is true that people can spend a significant amount of time talking about their peers, oftentimes that chatter is quite ________ .

So, why do people gossip?

Some researchers argue that gossip helped our ________ to survive. Evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar first pioneered this idea, comparing gossip to the grooming(清洁皮毛)that monkeys and other primates ________ as a means of forming close relationships. ________ picking fleas and dirt off one another to bond(联系), we now talk. This is "where gossip comes in, because chit-chat is mostly talking about other people and ________ social information." Says David Ludden, a professor of psychology at Georgia Gwinnet College.

Gossiping, Dunbar's work argues, gives humans the ability to spread ________ information to very large social networks. "We are much more social than our ancestors, so it can be very helpful to get information about people from others when this network is too ________ to observe by ourselves." he explained in a 2003 paper published in the Review of General Psychology.

Some scholars view gossip as evidence of cultural ________ , providing people with examples of what's socially acceptable—and what's not. For example, if there's someone who cheats a lot in a community or social circle and people start to talk about that person in a negative way, says Robbins, the collective criticism should warn others of the consequences of cheating. And as word will almost always travel back to the source of said gossip, it can "serve to keep people in check, ________ speaking," Robbins adds.

5 . Neighbors play an important role in our lives. Their lifestyle, friends, and social habits can have a strong influence on our lives.   So it's a good idea to get along well with neighbors and build a better relationship that will last for many years to come.   But how should you get along with your neighbors?

When you hear of a special need you can meet, do it, such as sitting with a sick child while your neighbor goes to work or taking an elderly parent to a doctor's appointment when their car won't start.

If you hear that someone close by is ill, has an accident, or is out of work, give him or her a hot meal or a fresh dessert. Your kindness will add a special feeling during a difficult time.   If your neighbor is cutting down a tree or building a doghouse, offer helping hands to him or her.   There is no better way to build relationships.   Besides, you never know when the favor might be returned.

Exchange holiday cards, gifts or traditions.   Invite your neighbors over for a cup of coffee or lunch.   A backyard barbecue can be a great way to share food and fun.   If they've watched your kids grow up or been concerned about your family events, they may want to share these special events.

Plan a party.   Invite all your neighbors to your party.   Planning and carrying out the activity helps everyone to know and understand each other. Your neighbors are like your family in many ways since you have to live with them, or near them for a long time.   Appreciate their strong points and ignore weak points, and everyone will get along well.

6 . I don’t remember the exact date I met Marty for the first time. Like a lot of people who want to get through a checkout line, I found my thoughts on speed, nothing more. The line I was standing in wasn't moving as quickly as I wanted, and I glanced toward the cashier, who was busy receiving money from customers.

He was an old man in his sixties. I thought, well, it probably took him a little longer to get the jobs done. For the next few minutes I watched him. He greeted every customer before he began scanning the goods they were purchasing. Sure, his words were the usual, “How’s it going?” But he did something different—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond to what they had said and talk with them briefly.

I thought it was strange, but I guessed I had grown accustomed to people asking me how I was doing simply out of a conversation without thinking. Usually, after a while, you don't give any thought to the question and just say something back quietly.

This old cashier seemed sincere about wanting to know how people were feeling. Meanwhile, the high-tech cash register rang up their purchases and he announced what they owed. When customers handed money to him, he pushed the appropriate keys, the cash drawer popped open, and he counted out their change.

Then magic happened.

He placed the change in his left hand, walked around the counter to the customers, and extended his right hand in an act of friendship. As their hands met, the old cashier looked the customers in the eyes. “I want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye.” The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless.

Now it was my turn. I glanced down at the name tag on his red waistcoat, the kind experienced Wal-Mart cashier wore, it read, “Marty.”

Marty told me how much I owed and I handed him some money. The next thing I knew he was standing beside me, offering his right hand and holding my change in his left hand. His kind eyes locked onto mine. Smiling, and with a firm handshake...

10 . Think of the last time you disagreed with another person. Maybe you argued with a sibling (兄弟;姊妹) over what to watch on TV.     1    . How did your disagreement end? Were you able to see the issue (争论的问题) from the other person’s viewpoint?

2    . They’re part of life. After all, everyone has different opinions. We all have past experiences that shape how we see the world. Still, not all disagreements are bad. In fact, many people look at them as opportunities to learn. They do so by trying to understand where both sides are coming from.

How can you understand both sides of an issue? Often,it’s best to start by asking questions. Questions help us learn about the world around us.     3    . In a disagreement, asking for more information can help you learn about a person’s viewpoint. It can also lead you to gather more facts. This can paint a better picture of the entire issue.

When seeking to understand both sides of an issue, it’s important to know the difference between facts and opinions. Remember, facts are based on true information. Opinions can change from person to person. Paying attention to facts can stop biases (偏见) from taking over in a disagreement.     4    .

Maybe you’re wondering why it’s important to understand both sides of an issue, anyway. After all, don’t most people just want to prove that their side is right? Often, that’s true. However, understanding the whole issue can lead to both sides working together.

5    . However, when both sides truly try to understand each other, they often find they have more in common than they thought. The next time you disagree with another person, try asking him questions about their viewpoint. You never know what you might learn.

A.Let’s agree to disagree.
B.Disagreements may be uncomfortable at first.
C.In many situations, disagreements are unavoidable.
D.The ability to ask the right questions reflects good thinking ability.
E.Or perhaps you tried to convince grown-ups that ice cream makes a better dinner than vegetables.
F.The right questions can also help us learn about other people.
G.This can help everyone involved see both sides of the issue.
