1 . Is it bad to work out in cold weather?
Burn extra calories
In cold climates, your body needs to perform extra heat to keep your body warm. Brown fat is the type of body fat that helps control body temperature. When you’re outside in the cold, brown fat burns calories in order to increase body temperature.
Help increase willpower
Working out in the heat can cause you to become tired more easily, since it increases sweating and your heart rate more rapidly.
Exercising outside during the winter is thought to be one useful way to avoid a type of disorder or depression that tends to affect people during the dark winter months. Sunlight and exercise both have a positive impact on your mental (精神的) condition. They help give out more “feel good” chemicals, including serotonin and endorphins.
Help you sleep better
The combination of sunlight exposure (暴露) during the daytime, fresh air and physical activity can help you relax and sleep well at night.
Exercising in cold weather isn’t for everyone, though. If you have any health problems, it is advisable to talk with your health care provider first.

3 . Three stretches (伸展) you should do every day
For one who doesn’t get much physical activity, a sore and achy back is a common problem.
Here are a few simple moves that anyone can fit into their daily exercise.
Slowly rolling your neck in one direction, then the other, is a simple but effective way to relax some of your muscles. When you’re done, move on to rolling your shoulders forwards and backwards. They may seem simple, but these are really good for reducing stress and tension in the body. Most people hold a lot of tension in their shoulders.
Forward folds (弯曲)
Even if you can’t touch your toes, folding your body forwards is a great move for loosening up your back.
Butterfly poses
It’s great for you to stretch your back and inner thighs.
A.Neck and shoulder rolls |
B.Walk forwards and backwards |
C.Rolling them really helps relieve it |
D.You should take long and deep breaths |

5 . A new term “exercise guilt” has been around in the past few years to capture the disappointment we feel when our fitness goals go unmet. When we fall short, we get discouraged and are less likely to exercise at all, putting us at risk for a host of destructive physical and mental effects.
To find a healthy balance and rid ourselves of exercise guilt, we should consider whether we’re looking at the problem all wrong. We argue that, perhaps we’re failing to reach our goals, not because we’re lazy, but because for a variety of reasons we push ourselves too hard, and set unrealistic expectations that lead to discouragement.
Many people have failed to distinguish the difference between “movement” and “exercise”. When many health professionals say “movement”, they’re not just referring to intensive exercise. It’s an all-inclusive term that includes both fitness and the general physical activity we participate in every day: walking from our desks to grab a drink of water, stretching before we go to bed, even getting up and moving around the kitchen to make breakfast. Exercise is planned and structured training, whereas movement is the natural by-product of expending energy during the course of everyday life.
The American Heart Association now advocates for 10 minutes of movement a day. It can be as simple as taking the stairs two or three flights, walking to your colleague’s desk as opposed to calling him, or walking around the block and saying hello to neighbors on the way, combined with what we used to call “warm-ups”(stretches and such, for just 30 seconds per day).
In conclusion, it is a perfect time for us to rethink our health habits and get rid of the “exercise guilt” we may be feeling. And it’s time to readjust our routines to a modest pace.

7 . Created after Beijing successfully became an Olympic candidate (候选人), the Beijing 2022 Education Program is part of the host's wider efforts to encourage its people to participate in winter sports. The program has already gone beyond its original target of engaging 300 million people in snow and ice activities. And by involving schools, children and young people, the program ensures that its Olympic legacy (遗产) will continue to reach the young audience long after the Games.
In a push to engage the younger generation in ice and snow sports, schools and educational authorities have developed a curriculum (课程) that includes winter sports knowledge and history, practical classes for beginners, and an introduction to becoming a winter sports coach. Winter sports clubs have also been set up in schools all around the country, allowing children to develop ice and snow sports skills in the warmer south as well as the cold north.
Sports education is proved to have a positive effect on physical and mental health. It also helps to reduce stress, and build team and organizational skills. When COVID-19 made outdoor participation harder, organizers made sure that children and teenagers could follow a digital Olympic curriculum. Some classes were conducted through websites and broadcasters, with the online materials viewed more than 140 million times. Videos, courses and games were all part of digital efforts to bring the Olympic Games and winter sports closer to the young. Short videos have gone popular, attracting more than 70 million viewers online.
Thanks to sports education, more and more young people have expressed interest in becoming professional athletes. To keep them practising ahead of the next Olympic Winter Games, Mini Winter Olympics will be organized every year. The last ones attracted more than 1, 700 children and seemed to keep growing.

8 . Free solo climbing is a risky form of rock climbing where the climber makes the climb alone without ropes or any other protective things. In June 2017, Alex Honnold completed an ultimate free solo climb up El Capitan, a 3,000-foot wall in Yosemite National Park.
On a freezing November morning in 2016, Alex determined to take up a challenge-a free solo climb of the world’s most famous vertical(垂直的)cliff. Every step, he had to be extra careful to keep the balance. All the time he had to shine his headlamp on the cold, smooth part of stones to decide where he could next place his foot. Unlike parts of the climb higher up that Alex could climb with his strong fingers, this lower part he must manage with a perfect balance of fine skills and confidence.
Every move tied people’s hearts. The cameraman said. “Every time I got no response, I thought Alex was bailing. But it turned out that I was wrong-He was still moving on.”
More physically challenging parts wait for him to climb up with his feel and hands pressing the rock. The Free blast is the most frightening part. In 2016, after several failures, Alex knew he would try again. His foot tap-tap-tapped against the wall as if he was feeling his way into the huge rock, but he wouldn’t turn back this time. And then, he stood on the top and he made it!
People view free soloing differently. Critics regard it as risky, considering the long list of those who’ve died attempting it. Others, myself included, recognize it as the sport's truest expression. Such was the attitude of Austrian climber Paul Preuss, the father of free soloing. He believed that the spirit of mountain-climbing was to master a mountain with wonderful physical and mental skill.

C.Alex was struggling. |
D.Alex was being saved |
A.A great dream is limitless. |
B.Wisdom is better than force. |
C.Gains can't make up for losses. |
D.Strong will leads to a smooth path. |
5. What did Alex need to climb the lower part?
6. What does "turn back" mean in paragraph 4?
7. How does Paul Preuss feel about free soloing?
9 . American Harvey Sutton, a 5-year-old boy, just finished walking the whole length of the Appalachian Trail (路线), one of the longest footpaths in the world. Harvey is one of the youngest people ever to walk the trail. He and his parents completed the trip in 209 days.
Harvey climbed over tall rocks and got to watch wild animals. “The rock climbs were really hard but fun. We were not bored.” said Harvey. His parents tried hard to him happy and excited. His father said meeting and talking with other hikers along the way prevented boredom.
Harvey was 4 years old when he and his parents began their walk in January. He turned 5 before the family completed the trip earlier this month in Maine. But the youngest of all to finish the trip may be Juniper Netteberg. The little girl finished walking the footpath at age 4 with her parents last October.
The long hiking may seem like an extreme activity for a child, but Dr. Laura Blaisdell sees no harm. She is a children’s doctor and medical adviser to the American Camp Association. Dr. Blaisdell said children are strong enough for the experience if parents attend to their child’s usual social and emotional development.
Harvey’s, trip earned admiration from another hiker, Dale Sanders. He is the oldest person to hike the footpath, which he did at age 82. “It’s going to change his life forever, and his parents’ life, too. The kid went through some hardships, but don’t we all? Hardships make us stronger,” said Sanders, now 86. “That kid is going to smile through life.”
1. Which of the following words can best describe Harvey’s trip?A.Exciting but adventurous. | B.Difficult but interesting. |
