2 . How can you recognize a British, a German, and a Frenchman, apart from their accents and names?

There are ways people dress, but they are very complex and would take a lot of time to explain. Some items of clothing are just more popular in some countries than in others. For example, Germans often wear sandals (凉鞋) with their socks on, which is something a Frenchman would normally never do. In Berlin, where I live, people don’t really dress as smart as they would in Paris or London. The Germans have a reputation for not caring so much about their outward appearance — as long as the clothes are comfortable, they’re happy! They also seem to love sportswear more than people anywhere else.

The French cannot queue, while the British just seem to love it. French people are always late, British people are always on time and the Germans are always early.

French people use their hands a lot more when they speak, and take a lot more time to say something. French people care a lot how things are done or said. The British do care how things are done and said, but only in a context of politeness. The Germans just care how things are done. The French and the British seem to care more how things look, for example, food products and packaging.

When it comes to food, for example in a restaurant, a Frenchman would never think of ordering beer with a meal, which is something tally normal for a German or a British.

I find the Germans the cleanest and most disciplined in public space. The French are the worst and the British somehow in between.

1. According to the passage, how can we tell the three kinds of people apart?
A.By their behaviour.B.By their nicknames.
C.By the colour of their skin.D.By their facial expressions.
2. If a man is dressed in casual clothes, where does he probably come from?
A.France.B.Germany.C.Britain.D.India.
3. What can you learn from the passage?
A.German people care more how things look.
B.Frenchmen are strictly in order when queuing for food.
C.British people are always likely to care how things are done and said.
D.Of the three kinds of people, the Germans are the most self-controlled in public.
4. How does author explain his ideas?
A.By giving numbers.B.By giving logical reasoning.
C.By making a comparison.D.By making a detailed description.

3 . Italy and China are two nations with a long, venerable, and complex history. These two countries came into contact with each other in ancient times, such as Marco Polo and Matteo Ricci, respectively an explorer and a missionary.

The two countries celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2020. On this occasion, they decided to set up the “Italy-China Year of Culture and Tourism”, a year full of events and activities aimed at boosting cooperation, traveling, and people-to-people exchange.

The opening event was held in January 2020. Due to the pandemic outbreak and the consequent travel bans, tourism and cultural exchanges were brought to a standstill and the events designed to promote exchange and tourism did not take place. However, these events have been rescheduled and will be held in 2022. The year of tourism and culture “remains a demonstration of the common intention to maintain an important people-to-people exchange between two of the world’s most important civilizations”.

In terms of tourism, the two countries show positive bilateral trends. There are several examples of twin towns between Italy and China. The three oldest pairs are Milan-Shanghai (established in1979), Florence-Nanjing (1980), and Venice-Suzhou (1980). Normally the pairings are made according to the existing similarities between the cities. Milan and Shanghai are respectively Italy’s and China’s fashion capitals and economic hubs. Florence and Nanjing were both capitals in ancient times and are filled with scenic spots and ancient buildings. Finally, Suzhou’s ancient part is characterized by canals, bridges, and narrow streets that remind of Venice’s structure, to such an extent that this East-China metropolis was nicknamed “The Venice of the East”. This kind of relation between cities is important to encourage cooperation in various sectors (education, tourism, culture, etc.) and to promote people-to-people exchange.

The touristic sector is an important one to cherish: It not only gives work to many people, but also plays a role in raising mutual understanding and familiarity between different countries. As stressed by an author, “The more Chinese tourists come to Italy and the more Italians travel to China, the closer the two countries become on a human level.”

1. What is the common aim of the Italy-China Year of Culture and Tourism in 2022?
A.To deal with the pandemic hand in hand.
B.To boost cooperation between the two countries.
C.To promote traveling between the two countries.
D.To promote people-to-people exchange between the two countries.
2. Why didn’t the events designed to promote exchange and tourism take place in 2020?
A.Because the pandemic broke out.
B.Because the events have been rescheduled.
C.Because cultural exchanges were brought to a standstill.
D.Because the two countries have shown positive bilateral trends about the tourism.
3. Why are Suzhou and Venice considered as twin towns?
A.Because the two cities are economic hubs.
B.Because the two cities are filled with scenic spots.
C.Because the two cities are filled with ancient buildings.
D.Because Suzhou’s ancient part reminds of Venice’s structure.
4. What can we infer from the author in the last paragraph?
A.Italy and China show positive bilateral trends.
B.Italy and China are two nations with a long and complex history.
C.Tourism and cultural exchanges between Italy and China were brought to a standstill.
D.The touristic sector plays a role in raising mutual understanding between Italy and China.

4 . I remember when Kamala Harris became Joe Biden's running mate. It seemed funny how many people pronounced her name incorrectly. On one occasion, a news host became upset when being corrected, and purposely called her Kumbaya.

I am no stranger to this issue as many of my students are from Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and sometimes their names are difficult for me to pronounce, even after asking them how to say it. Many students seem unwilling to correct me when I attempt to learn their names correctly. The other thing I’ve seen in growing numbers is students “adopting” an English name.

It's much more common than many think, for people to change their names in order to fit in.

This is especially the case when it comes to seeking jobs. Racial and cultural minorities often attempt to avoid discrimination hiring by hiding racial cues on the resume including changing their name. This is referred to as “resume whitening”. Research shows almost 50 percent of black and Asian job applicants did so.

Xian Zhao from the University of Toronto researches ethnic (种族的) name pronunciation, saying that many people don’t understand that habitually pronouncing an unfamiliar name inaccurately is a form of indirect discrimination. It sends a message that “you are the minorities” says Zhao. “You are not important in this environment, so why should I take time and my effort to learn it?”On the other end, those with ethnic names frequently don’t correct people, even when their name is pronounced wrong repeatedly, feeling it is better just to keep the peace and not stand out for being difficult.

It is important to try to pronounce everyone’s name as they pronounce it. This communicates respect of them as a person and their culture. There is nothing wrong with asking someone to repeat their name so that you can learn to pronounce it properly. This is usually appreciated.

1. When their names are incorrectly pronounced, the author’s Asian students
A.attempt to laugh at itB.tend to accept it
C.offer to correct the authorD.agree to change their names
2. Which of the following can be seen as “resume whitening”?
A.An application for a better job.
B.A change in work environment.
C.A ban on racial discrimination in workplace.
D.A practice of using Western names in job seeking.
3. In his research, Xian Zhao finds that
A.ethnics accept their names being mispronounced to save trouble
B.ethnics fight effectively with the discrimination against their names
C.many westerners pronounce ethnic names incorrectly on purpose
D.many westerners make efforts to pronounce ethnic names correctly
4. What’s the author’s attitude toward pronouncing ethnic names correctly?
A.Critical.B.Uncaring.C.Reserved.D.Supportive.

8 . Can you imagine living without cars, computers or telephones? Some people in the rainforest and mountains of Venezuela and Brazil do just that. One tribe, the Yanomami, has lived the same way for thousands of years. They only have numbers for one, two and more than two, and they have never invented the wheel. But they have also been called some of “the last free people on earth.”

In the late 1920s, researchers found a tribe of people untouched by modern society. This was the first reported meeting with the Yanomami, who were living deep within the South American jungle.

Scientists agree that their location deep in the forest helped their culture unchanged. Until recently, most Yanomami still lived in isolated regions. Everything they needed came from the rain forest. They hunted, fished and farmed the land. Then a discovery brought the outside world to them. And along with it came deadly changes.

Gold was discovered in Yanomami in the 1970s. By 1987, around 80, 000 miners had moved into the area. In a fight to take over the land, they killed some Yanomami. They also brought into new sicknesses, including the common cold and malaria. Today over 62 percent of Yanomami show signs of malaria.

Just as deadly were the results of mining, including polluted streams and cleared forests. Within just seven years their population fell by 20 percent.

Today governments and international organizations are looking for ways to protect the Yanomami. The Brazilian government has reserved a large area of land for the tribe. And in 1990, Brazil ordered all the miners out of Amazon region. Yet these things might not be enough. Gold is so valuable that miners keep going back and harming the Yanomami's way of life.
