2 . People who have children experience greater happiness and feel they find more meaning in life than those without kids , according to psychologist from the university of California and university of British Columbia and Stanford university. They also said that in spite of all kinds of pressure linked to parenthood, parents feel happier during the day hours when they are taking care of their kids than during other daily tasks. The report included three different studies , one from each university, and appeared in the journal psychological science .
The research was carried out in three stages, and in each of the parts psychologists interviewed about 190 people and asked them to describe how they felt during their daily activities which included cooking, changing diapers(尿布), doing the dishes, going to work and playing with the kids. The authors wanted to figure out whether people who had children felt happier and evaluated(评估)their lives more positively when compared to those without kids. They were also interested in whether parents experienced more positive feelings while taking care of their kids than when doing some other day -to -day activities .
According to Elizabeth Dunn, psychology professor at the University of British Columbia and a co-author of the study, the results were quite a surprise for the researchers. All the people who had children reported that caring for their young ones was more meaningful and made their lives much happier than any other activity did.
These findings challenge the common belief that children are linked to reduced well-being, researchers said. The impression many people have now from the mass media and academic research is that being a parent seems to be quite a negative experience. Many previous studies on this topic linked parenthood to unhappy marriages, lower life satisfaction and even depression, Elizabeth Dunn, who was expecting her first child, said. In Dunn's personal opinion, parenthood is related to, but may not cause, happiness.
The results showed that age and marital status(婚姻状况)also played a role in parental happiness. The study found that older and more mature married couples who have higher social status and do not have financial problems are more likely to be happier if they have kids when compared to childless couples. Even single parents said that all the stresses linked to parenthood did not completely wipe out the feelings of satisfaction caused by caring for kids. On the other hand, young parents who were under the age of 26 were found to be significantly unhappier than their peers who did not have children. Interestingly, fathers in the study were reported to be particularly satisfied and experience only positive feelings compared to men without kids.
Sonja Lyubomirsky, professor of psychology at UC Riverside and a leading scholar in positive psychology, said that their study does not necessarily mean that parenting makes people happy; however, there is a clear connection to be taken into consideration. And while more research is needed on the matter, the new findings suggest that the responsibilities and all the work that arrives with parenthood may be offset (抵消)by the pleasure of having children, and childcare may actually be linked to feelings of happiness and meaning in life.

5 . Highway safety experts have long been concerned about a possible increase of accidents and deaths as people in their 70s, 80s and beyond continued to drive. However, a recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that drivers age 70 and older were less likely to be involved in a car accident than those 35 to 54.
The study, published in June in The Journal of Safety Research, recorded a 43 percent drop in accidents among drivers 70 and older from 1997 to 2018. For middle-aged drivers, the decline in accidents was half that, 21 percent. Although seniors rarely drove as far as younger drivers did, older adults had better safety records per mile driven. In 2017, for the first time ever, drivers 70 and older had fewer crashes reported to the police than middle-aged drivers, the institute found.
The study’s authors credited two major factors for the improved safety record of older drivers: Seniors today are healthier than in decades past, and most are operating safer vehicle. To that, I would add, they’re helped by significant safety improvements in roadway design. For example, when stop signs or traffic lights were replaced by roundabouts at crossroads, overall crashes dropped 37 percent, injury crashes by 75 percent, and deaths by 90 percent.
Still, there’s no question that an aging mind and body can compromise driving safety. Flexibility and reaction time necessarily decline as-we get-older. Age-related health challenges that can worsen driving ability include arthritis (关节炎), hearing loss and dementia (痴呆). The most important lesson for older drivers is to acknowledge (承认) such changes and know how to make up for them if possible.
Brenda Vrkljan, a specialist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, is doing what she can to help older adults continue to drive safely by monitoring where and when they drive and how they behave behind the wheel.
A program called Candrivee which Dr Vrkljan helped establish, is tracking the driving patterns of older adults to assess what changes might improve safety. She and colleagues are placing cameras in aging drivers’ cars to record their unsafe missteps, like failing to check mirrors before changing lanes or not stopping soon enough. Afterward, the drivers can view the video, offering them an opportunity to bear witness to their limitations.

8 . Compared with the obvious environmental issues we hear about every day, littering often takes a backseat—but it’s more pressing than we may think.
If you were to throw, say, a banana peel out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it’s part of a fruit—right? Absolutely, no. A banana peel can take up to two years to break drown. An orange peel and a cigarette butt (烟蒂) has a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminium cans last up to 100 years; and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles, Styrofoam cups and plastic bags.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer, we can’t only measure the severity (严重性) of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading time, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is thrown in the UK every day. Similarly, our regular littering here and there has caused the UK’s rat population to increase by 60 million.
Littering is not a cheap habit either: UK taxpayers spend £ 500 million in order to keep our streets clean, and when you include our green spaces, that goes up to £1 billion. So, it’s not surprising that if caught littering you could face a £ 20,000 fine or even jail time and, if you threw away something harmful, the court could give you five years to serve.
To take back our beautiful countryside and cities we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be. We need to truly care more about the world around us.

9 . Through several measures, Sunifia, a brand in outdoor clothing, is actively supporting a circular model of clothing. It encourages people to share, resell, repair, and reuse their clothes, producing less waste.
Every second, one garbage truck of clothes is sent to the landfill or is burned, according to a report by the Ellen Macarthur Foundation. Sunifia is taking this alarming data seriously.
A few years ago, the fashion brand opened an independent online store, which is a collection of renewed clothing where people resell their old clothes for cash or store credits and shop for second-hand goods. Now Sunifia is including a “buy used” option on their website, offering pre-loved clothes alongside their newest designs.
Other chains, for example, Macy’s, have also used the new circular economy business model. Famous traditional businesses are also becoming used clothing providers, and are changing the way pre-loved clothes are sold and viewed. Even the shoppers, who used to be doubtful, are now open to the idea of buying used quality items. As a result, it is no surprise that the total secondhand market is projected to grow to almost twice the size of fast fashion by 2029, as seen in the report by thredUP.
Naturally, the most sustainable piece of clothing is the one that already exists. This “green” article of clothing doesn’t require using natural resources. It saves clothes from ending up in landfills, and it requires no plastic packaging.
According to a 2018 report by thredUP, buying a piece of used clothing increases its life on average by 2.2 years, which reduces its carbon, waste, and water footprint by 73 percent. So even though the development of innovative materials and processes in fashion seems promising, wearing secondhand clothes is the easiest and most immediate way to face the environmental challenges the fashion industry brings.
Action like Sunifia’s Buy Used initiative shows responsibility towards the environment and also encourages other companies to produce high-quality items that last for years. Buying second-hand clothes makes it possible to get the same great quality expected from leading brands at a more affordable price, and increases the lifetime of clothing.
1. Why did Sunifia open an online store?A.To know people’s shopping habits better. | B.To play its part in environment protection. |
C.To help people reduce spending on clothes. | D.To build up a collection of pre-loved clothes. |
A.The second-hand direction is here to stay. | B.Sunifia has set a good example to others. |
C.Businesses affect people’s shopping habits. | D.The second-hand market’s growth is unexpected. |
A.Encouraging innovation in cloth. | B.Taking advantage of pre-loved clothes. |
C.Reducing the use of plastic packaging. | D.Improving the process of making clothes. |
A.Fashion comes full circle. | B.Everyone must do his part. |
C.Waste could be turned into treasure. | D.Necessity is the mother of invention. |
10 . COVID herd immunity (群体免疫) will not happen in 2021
World Health Organization (WHO) chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said Monday that herd immunity to coronavirus would not be achieved in 2021, despite the growing availability of vaccines (疫苗产量).
Factors that delay herd immunity include limited access to vaccines in developing countries, skepticism (怀疑) over vaccination, and the potential for virus mutations (变异), according to health experts.
A growing number of countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Germany and other European Union countries, are in the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns.
Herd immunity occurs when enough people in a population have immunity to an infection so that it prevents the disease from spreading.
“We are not going to achieve any levels of population immunity or herd immunity in 2021,”
Swaminathan told a briefing, while emphasizing that measures like physical distancing, hand washing and mask wearing continue to be necessary in containing COVID’s spread for the rest of the year.
However, Swaminathan praised the “incredible progress” made by vaccine researchers to develop several safe and effective vaccines at unprecedented speed. Countries are currently administering vaccines developed by BioNTech-Pfizer, Oxford University/AstraZeneca and Moderna.
“The vaccines are going to come,” she said. “They are going to go to all countries ... but meanwhile we mustn’t forget that there are measures that work,” she added, referring to hygiene and social distancing.
“We won’t get back to normal quickly,” Dale Fisher, chairman of the WHO’s Outbreak Alert and Response Network, told a conference hosted by Reuters news agency. “We know we need to get to herd immunity and we need that in a majority of countries, but we are not going to see that in 2021,” Fisher said. “There might be some countries that might achieve it but even then that will not create ‘normal’ especially in terms of border controls,” he added.

C.Singapore. | D.the United Kingdom. |
A.People are skeptical about vaccination. |
B.Access to vaccines in developing countries is limited. |
C.Virus mutations are likely to happen. |
D.A growing number of countries begin mass-vaccination campaigns. |
A.Unclear. | B.Negative. |
C.Positive. | D.Indifferent. |
A.There maybe a long way to get to herd immunity all over the world. |
B.If some countries might achieve herd immunity, people will live a ‘normal’ life |
C.In terms of good border controls, we can achieve herd immunity. |
D.In many countries in 2021, people will live a ‘normal’ life in terms of border controls. |
