Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off' the freeway on her way to work. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. Rolled down her window.
“Hey!” she shouted. “I'm driving around giving free haircuts. Do you want one right now?” “Actually,” the man said, “I was really hoping to get a haircut.”
“I'll be right back,” Steller said. She drove off, went to the salon she owns, and recruited one of her stylists to help her load a red chair into her car. Then the two of them drove back, and trimmed the man's curly graying hair. He told them about growing up in Mississippi, about moving to be closer to his adult children, and now he still talks to his mom every day. After Steller was done, the man looked in a mirror, “I look good!” he said.
To date, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts to people around the city. These people are all living on the margins, and she is keenly aware of the power of her cleanup job.
“It's more than a haircut,” she says, “I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people and build relationships.” Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. “Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely people looke,” she says. “I thought maybe I'd go around and ask if people want free haircuts. I can't fix their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.”
Steller listens to people's stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet. The attention apparently works. When she was cutting a woman's hair one day, someone drove by and yelled, “You look amazing!” The woman in the chair smiled. “I'm not invisible,” she exclaimed, “thought I was invisible. Look, people see me!”
And it all began with a belief in simple acts of kindness, such as a free haircut. “The way you show up in the world matters,” says Steller. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.”

Glenn was born in Kansas on August 4, 1909. At 7, Glenn was badly burned in an accidental fire in their schoolhouse. Sometimes scenes go in unexpected directions. The best improv happens when performers stay open to different possibilities. Over time, I started to enjoy our classes. I also became better at listening and communicating clearly in the moment.
That training was put to good use when I was giving a lecture about my science. An audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t grow out of the information I’d presented. Instead of getting confused, I used the “yes, and” method, and it helped me find proper answers. Last year, I came across confusing data. Instead of getting discouraged, I kept exploring the data and ended up discovering a new type of cell—one that wasn’t behaving as expected. We felt quite full while other days could be very quiet if we sat in the clinic waiting for people to come to us to get measured. Volunteers should also be aware that things don’t always happen that fast and it can be hard to see progress in only four weeks, so try to stay longer if you can.
Also, people in the poor areas can be very friendly! A local woman that another volunteer and I worked with for a few weeks invited us to her family’s picnic. She and her husband cooked and a lot of her family came — it was really lovely. I found my volunteering in Rio a rich and unforgettable experience.

Read to children: Love and Learning is an organization that provides volunteers to help children with learning disabilities. Read books out loud to groups of children four to six years old, or read one-on-one with struggling readers seven to eight years old.
Play with animals: Lovely Friends is an organization that visits local animal shelters and provides volunteers to spend time with the animals while their cages are being cleaned.

【推荐3】In April 2015, UK journalist Rebecca Atkinson, along with other parents of children with disabilities started the campaign(活动) Toy Likeme to solve the lack of various toys for children with disabilities. They created a Facebook page where everyone was able to post ideas and pictures about what toys for children with disabilities should look like.
Even though the campaign attracted a lot of attention, these parents couldn't rest until their ideas actually became real. Luckily, only 2 weeks after the campaign started, the people who started the campaign got in touch with a company in the UK that designs toys through 3D printing, and the company agreed to create a new series of dolls. That's when the first toys with disabilities were produced.
There are around 150 million children with disabilities, and even though the toy industry is worth over S2.9 billion, it has completely failed to create toys that are fitter for them. Until recently, that is. Thanks to this campaign that has taken the Internet by storm, many toy companies have answered this calling and have made toys specifically for children with disabilities.
Soon enough, the Toylikeme campaign on Facebook and Twitter finally reached the big companies like Lego, and now there is an entire series of toys with disabilities that have been sold worldwide.
Even after all the success this campaign has had, Toy Likeme gets on with its task. The organization has followers in over 45 countries and has received to continuously influence the global toy industry and hopefully make kids with disabilities all around the world feel accepted and appreciated.
