Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off' the freeway on her way to work. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. Rolled down her window.

“Hey!” she shouted. “I'm driving around giving free haircuts. Do you want one right now?” “Actually,” the man said, “I was really hoping to get a haircut.”

“I'll be right back,” Steller said. She drove off, went to the salon she owns, and recruited one of her stylists to help her load a red chair into her car. Then the two of them drove back, and trimmed the man's curly graying hair. He told them about growing up in Mississippi, about moving to be closer to his adult children, and now he still talks to his mom every day. After Steller was done, the man looked in a mirror, “I look good!” he said.

To date, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts to people around the city. These people are all living on the margins, and she is keenly aware of the power of her cleanup job.

“It's more than a haircut,” she says, “I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people and build relationships.” Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. “Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely people looke,” she says. “I thought maybe I'd go around and ask if people want free haircuts. I can't fix their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.”

Steller listens to people's stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet. The attention apparently works. When she was cutting a woman's hair one day, someone drove by and yelled, “You look amazing!” The woman in the chair smiled. “I'm not invisible,” she exclaimed, “thought I was invisible. Look, people see me!”

And it all began with a belief in simple acts of kindness, such as a free haircut. “The way you show up in the world matters,” says Steller. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.”

【推荐1】Glenn Cunningham, “the Kansas Ironman”, was an American middle-distance runner, and was considered the greatest American miler of all time.

Glenn was born in Kansas on August 4, 1909. At 7, Glenn was badly burned in an accidental fire in their schoolhouse. The little boy did survive after a long battle, though doctors told his mother that he was sure to die. Unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. But with his iron persistence and determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk and then to run.

By the time he was 12, he had beaten all the local high school runners. His legs remained deeply scarred, however. Throughout his life, he would have to spend time doing long warm-up exercises in order to maintain circulation. In addition, his injuries meant that he could never run smoothly or efficiently.

When in university, he ran for the university track team and won his first big race, the 1932 NCAA 1500 meters. That summer, he was selected for the U.S. Olympic track team and came in fourth in the 1500 meter race in the Olympic Games. In 1933, he won the AAU 800 meters with a time of 1:51.8. Overall, he ran 20 races during that summer. That year, the first year he was called “Ironman”.

Although Glenn might have used his name as a star athlete to make a great deal of money, he was more interested in helping others. He and his wife opened the Glenn Cunningham Youth Ranch and raised over 10,000 foster children over three decades.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章讲述了作者学习即兴表演课的过程以及收获。

【推荐3】I stood behind the curtain, my hands shaking. As I listened to the crowd laugh at the host’s jokes, I just thought why I believed I could do that. Two months earlier, I had signed up for improv(即兴表演) classes at a local theater, along with four other graduate students.

When I first heard about the improv classes, I was torn. I feared getting on stage and performing in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to improve my communication ability and gain confidence.

During our first class, we learned the key concept of improv: “yes, and”. If someone says monkeys are librarians, for example, then monkeys are librarians. We don’t question the logic; we say “yes” and continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong. To do this well, we have to avoid second-guessing ourselves. Sometimes scenes go in unexpected directions. The best improv happens when performers stay open to different possibilities. Over time, I started to enjoy our classes. I also became better at listening and communicating clearly in the moment.

That training was put to good use when I was giving a lecture about my science. An audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t grow out of the information I’d presented. Instead of getting confused, I used the “yes, and” method, and it helped me find proper answers. Last year, I came across confusing data. Instead of getting discouraged, I kept exploring the data and ended up discovering a new type of cell—one that wasn’t behaving as expected. If I hadn’t stayed open to the possibility that the results were real, I would have missed out on the most exciting finding of my Ph.D. so far.
